This study was undertaken to clarify the microstructure of the different IPS Empress ingots by etching and to observe the change of leucite crystal structure according to subsequent heat treatment and the crystal distribution according to sprue types(${\phi}2.8mm$, single sprue; ${\phi}1.8mm$, double sprue) by scanning electron microscopy. IPS Empress T1, O1 ingots used for staining technique, and Dentin(A2) ingots used for layering technique were selected for this study. To observe the microstructures of these ingots before pressing, the specimens were prepared in splinters($3{\times}3{\times}3mm$) taken from the original ingots. And to estimate crystal distribution and microstructural change by sprue type and subsequent heat treatment. the specimens($3{\times}3{\times}3mm$) were heat-pressed through the two types of sprues with different diameters and numbers, and all specimens were fired according to the recommended firing schedule. The observed surface was ground with waterproof papers($#800{\sim}#1800$) on the grind polisher and was cleaned ultrasonically. All specimen were etched with 0.5% hydrofluoric acid. After etching, the surface was treated by ion sputter coating for SEM observation at an accelerating voltage of 20kV. In all specimens, the central area of ground surface was observed because there was less difference in microstructure between the peripheral area and the central area. The results were as follows ; 1. In the microstructure according to the ingot type, there was a wide difference between the staining (T1,O1) and layering(Dentin A2) ingots, but there was not a considerable difference between the T1 ingot and the O1 ingot for staining technique. 2. In all specimens, the crystal dispersion of IPS Empress ceramic using double sprue was significantly more scattered than that of IPS Empress ceramic using single sprue. The degree of scattering was strongest in the Dentin(A2) specimen and weakest in the O1 ingot. 3. In the microstructural change according to the subsequent heat treatment, all of ingots had some microcracks in the inside of the leucite crystal and the glass matrix after pressing. The inner splinters of the leucite crystal became smaller, and more microcracks occurred in the glass matrix due to increasing heat treatment times. 4. The size of leucite crystals varied from $1{\mu}m\;to\;5{\mu}m$. The mean size of mature crystals was about $5{\mu}m$. The form of the crystal was similar to a circle when it was smaller and similar to an ellipse when it was larger.

All-ceramic restorations have had a more limited life expectancy than metal ceramic restorations because of their low strength. Their relatively lower strength and resistance to fracture have restricted the use of all-ceramic crowns to anterior applications where occlusal loads are lower. But there has been increasing interest in all-ceramic restorations because patients are primarily concerned with improved esthetics. Many efforts have been made to in prove the mechanical properties of dental ceramics. This study was designed to elucidate the influence of the luting agent on the strength of the Empress 2 crown (staining technique) cemented on human teeth. Seventy extracted human permanent molar teeth were chosen. Teeth were prepared for Empress 2 crowns with milling machine on a surveyor. A dental bur was placed in the mandrel that was positioned so that the long axis of the bur was perpendicular to the surveyor base. Dimensions of the Empress 2 crown preparation were $6^{\circ}$ taper on each side, $1.5{\pm}0.1mm$ shoulder margin, and 4mm crown height. The luting cements used in this study were as follow: 1. Uncemented 2. Zinc phosphate cements (Confi-Dental) 3. Conventional glass ionomer cement : Fuji 1 (GC) 4. Resin-modified glass ionomer cements : Fuji plus (GC) 5. Adhesive cements : Panavia F (Kuralay), Variolink II (Vivadent), Choice (Bisco). Fracture test using Instron. The crowns were loaded in compressive force to evaluate the effect of these cements on the breaking strength of these all-ceramic crowns. A steel ball with a diameter of 4mm was placed on the occlusal surface and load was applied to the steel ball by a cylindrical bolt with a crosshead speed of 0.5mm per minute until fracture occurred. The fractured surface was examined using Scanning Electron Microscopic Image (SEM) to discover the correlation between fracture strength and bonding capacity. Within the limitation of this in vitro study design, the results were as follows : 1. fomentations significantly increased the fracture resistance of Empress ceramic crowns compared to control. Uncemented (206.9 N): ZPC (812.9 N): Fuji 1 (879.5 N): Fuji Plus (937.7 N): Choice (1105.4 N): Variolink II (1221.1 N): Panavia F (1445.2 N). 2. Resin luting agent, treated by a silane bond enhancing agents, yielded a significant increase in fracture resistance. In some of the Panavia F group, a fracture extended into dentin. 3. According to SEM images of fractured Empress crowns, the stronger the bond at both interfaces(crown and die), the more fracture strength was acquired.

Although low translucency 3 mol% yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal has excellent mechanical properties, it has limited application as a monolithic prosthesis. To improve these optical limitations, translucent zirconia has improved esthetics due to an increase in the cubic phase; however, it is accompanied by a decrease in mechanical properties simultaneously. Lithium disilicate has improved its mechanical properties through crystal size reduction and various heat treatment methods; therefore, its clinical application range is continuously increasing. Translucent zirconia shows a wide distribution of physical properties depending on the yttria content and lithium disilicate according to the size and density of crystal grains. As a result, the indications for translucent zirconia and lithium disilicate are increasing. Therefore, in this literature review, we intend to examine the rationale behind the material selection criteria in clinical situations and considerations for designing fixed dental prostheses including pontic, in particular, by summarizing recent studies.
In this study, the heavy metal ions (of Pb, Cd, Cr, and Hg) in wastewater were removed using a spent Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2-based crystallized glass previously used as an induction top plate material. Changes in the removal efficiency of heavy metals according to different reaction parameters, such as the amount of zeolite used as a heavy-metal adsorbent, adsorption time, initial concentration of the heavy metals, and pH of the initial solution, were investigated. As the amount of zeolite added increased, the heavy-metal removal efficiency also increased. Adsorption time had a considerable influence on adsorption characteristics, and the removal efficiency of all heavy metals increased with increasing adsorption time. In the case of Cd, the removal efficiency was greatly improved depending on the adsorption time. The initial concentration of the heavy-metal solution did not affect the removal efficiency; however, the initial pH of the heavy-metal solution affected the removal efficiency. More specifically, the removal efficiency of Cd increased while that of Pb and Cr decreased with increasing pH. The adsorption characteristics of Hg were not significantly affected by pH.

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in various applications, including electric vehicles and portable electronics, due to their high energy density and long cycle life. The performance of lithium-ion batteries can be improved by using solid electrolytes, in terms of higher safety, stability, and energy density. Li1.5Al0.5Ti1.5(PO4)3 (LATP) is a promising solid electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium batteries due to its high ionic conductivity and excellent stability. However, the ionic conductivity of LATP needs to be improved for commercializing all-solid-state lithium battery systems. In this study, we investigate the microstructures and ionic conductivities of LATP by incorporating B2O3 glass ceramics. The smaller grain size and narrow size distribution were obtained after the introduction of B2O3 in LATP, which is attributed to the B2O3 glass on grain boundaries of LATP. Moreover, higher ionic conductivity can be obtained after B2O3 incorporation, where the optimal composition is 0.1 wt% B2O3 incorporated LATP and the ionic conductivity reaches 8.8×10-5 S/cm, more than 3 times higher value than pristine LATP. More research could be followed for having higher ionic conductivity and density by optimizing the processing conditions. This facile approach for establishing higher ionic conductivity in LATP solid electrolytes could accelerate the commercialization of all-solid-state lithium batteries.

In structural applications, brittle materials such as soda-lime glasses and ceramics are usually subjected to multiaxial stress state. Brittle materials with cracks or damage by foreign object impacts are apt to fracture abruptly from cracks, because of their properities of very high strength and low fracture toughness. But in most cases, the residual strength of structural members with damage has been tested under uniaxial stress condition such as the 4-point bend test. Depending upon the crack pattern developed, the strength under multiaxial stress state might be different from the one under uniaxial. A comparative study was carried out to investigate the influence of stress state on the residual strength evaluation. In comparable tests, the residual strength under biaxial stress state by the ball-on-ring test was greater than that under the uniaxial one by the 4-point bend test, when a small size indendation crack was introduced. In the case that crack having an angle of 90deg. to the applied stress direction, the ratio of biaxial to uniaxial flexure strength was about 1.12. The residual strength was different from crack angles to loading direction when it was evaluated by the 4-point bend test. The ratio of residual strength of 45deg. crack to 90deg. one was about 1.20. In the case of specimen cracked by a spherical impact, it was shown that an overall decrease in flexure strength with increasing impact velocity, and the critical impact velocity for formation of a radial and/or cone crack was about 30m/s. In those cases that relatively large cracks were developed as compared with the case of indented cracks, the ratio of residual strength under biaxial stress state to one uniaxial became small.
The MIM(metal-insulator-metal) capacitors with the Al/PMMA/ITO/Glass structures were manufactured according to various PMMA concentration of 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 wt%. The lowest leakage current and the largest capacitance were found to be 2.3 pA and 1.2 nF, respectively, for the device with 2 wt% PMMA concentration. The measured capacitance of the devices was almost same values with the calculated one. The optimum film thickness was obtained at the value of 48 nm, showing that the capacitance and leakage current were 1.92 nF, 0.3 pA at 2 wt%, respectively. From this experiment, the PMMA gate insulator films can be applicable to the organic thin film transistors.
The recently introduced castable glass ceramics incorporate properties characteristic of natural teeth and they are regarded as an ideal material to restore lost tooth structure. The purpose of this study was to compare the marginal fit of castable ceramic crown with that of the metal-ceramic crown in the process of heat treatment. Two master dies for castable ceramic crowns and metal-ceramic crowns were fabricated from being cast with the base metal. Each master die was duplicated with addition silicone and hard stone. Ten castable ceramic crowns were made on each hard stone die and their marginal openings were measured three times first, after casting; second, after ceramming; third, after shading. The other ten metal-ceramic crowns were made on each hard stone die and their marginal openings were measured three times : first, after casting; second, after degassing; third, after porcelain veneering. Each crown was seated on its master die with the constant force delivered by loading jig. And then, marginal openings were measured on four locations by optical projector at X50 magnification. The results were as follows: 1. The mean marginal openings of castable ceramic crowns were $31.1{\pm}12.7{\mu}m$ after casting; $44.6{\pm}12.8{\mu}m$ after ceramming; $51.2{\pm}16.8{\mu}m$ after shading. 2. The mean marginal openings of the metal-ceramic crowns were $26.2{\pm}13.8{\mu}m$ after casting; $29.8{\pm}10.3{\mu}m$ after degassing; $38.0{\pm}14.5{\mu}m$ after porcelain veneering. 3. There was significant increase in the marginal opening of castable ceramic crowns after ceramming, while metal-ceramic crowns sho(wed significant increase after porcelain veneering (p<0.05). 4. Marginal fit of metal-ceramic crown was better than that of castable ceramic crown (p<0.01).
A heat-pressed technique(IPS-Empress, Ivoclar) has been described to construct single unit crown, inlay/onlay and veneers using a partially pre-cerammed and pre-colored glass-leucite ingot that has the greateast strength by the combination of heat-pressed procedure through the smalldiameter sprue and heat treatment procedure. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the flexure strength of a heat-pressed ceramic material(IPS-Empress) without simulated firing treatments according to pontic designs. Two groups of 9 disks(1.4mm thick, 14mm in diameter) each using two types of sprues with different diameters($({\Phi}2.8\;,{\Phi}1.8)$) and numbers were prepared. The specimens were mounted in the testing jig. The flexural strengths were determined, by means of the bi-axial bending test, by loading the center of disk to failure using a universal testing machine(Zwick 145141, Zwick, Germany) at a cross-head speed of 1.0 mm/min. The means flexural strength value of one group using a sprue with ${\Phi}2.8$ was $140.4{\pm}8.0Mpa$. That of the other group using two sprues with ${\Phi}1.8$ was $151.8{\pm}10.3Mpa$. After analysis, results showed that there was a statistical difference between groups(t=2.33m p<0.05). No clnical implications were drawn from these data because of absence of simulated firing treatment.
It was investigated in this study that a preparation method, activation energy, surface area, pore volume, pore size distribution and DTA analysis of the dry gel in process of producing monolithic porous gel in Li2O-Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2 system by the sol-gel technique using metal alkoxides. Activation energy for gellation according to the variation of water concentration and the kind of catalysts ranged from 10 to 20kcal/mole. Monolithic dry gels were prepared after drying at 9$0^{\circ}C$ when the amount of water for gellation was 4~8 times more than the stoichiometric amount, that was necessary for the full hydrolysis of the mixed metal alkoxide. The specific surface area, the pore volume, the average pore radius of the dried gel at 18$0^{\circ}C$ according to the various kinds of catalyst were about 348~734$m^2$/g, 0.35~0.70ml/g and 10~35$\AA$, respectively. It showed that the dry gels were porous body. As a result ofthe analysis of DTA, it was confirmed that the exothermaic peaks at 715$^{\circ}C$ and 77$0^{\circ}C$ was clue to the crystallization of dried gel.
