  • 128 freshly extracted human molars were used to study the interaction between dentinal smear layer removal with various agents, and the shear bond strength of a light cured glass ionomer cement to dentin. It was proposed that the removal of smear layers using acidic cleaners followed by incorporation of Fe mordant with dentin could enhanced the infiltration of monomer component in light curing glass ionomer cement and resulted in a high bond strength. For the first treatment process for removal of smear layers on the surfaces of dentin, 50 % citric acid, 10% maleic acid and 10 % phosphoric acid were used, and for the second treatment process, 15% ferric chloride, 6.8% ferric oxalate or 30% potassium oxalate were used. Distilled water was used as a control. After double sequential treatment on dentin, a light curing glass ionomer cement was bonded to dentin. After being immersed in water at 31'C for 24 hours, shear bond strengths were measured Instron testing machine(Model No.4202, USA). Surface changes were also observed using SEM (Hitachi, S-2300, Japan) after treatment process with each agents. The following conclusions were drawn : 1. Dentin surface cleaned with maleic acid and treated with ferric oxalate showed the highest bond strength with light curing glass ionomer cement. 2. Bond strengths of glass ionomer cement to dentin treated with maleic acid or citric acid were the highest, and that treated with phosphoric acid showed the lowest. 3. The effect of ferric oxalate on shear bond strength to dentin was always higher than that of ferric chloride. 4. The smear layers were clearly removed and the orifices of dentinal tubules were opened widely by the citric acid, maleic acid and phosphoric acid. 5. The orifices of dentinal tubules opened after using the first solution were closed with the treatment of ferric chloride. 6. The precipitate like crystals were formed on dentin surfaces and tubules, but a significant decrease in bond strength of glass ionomer cement to dentin surface treated with potassium oxalate.

  • This study was designed to investigate the pulpal effects of the glass ionomer cement. (Lining cement, G-C Co. Japan) For this purpose, 10 cats were selected, and Class V cavities were prepared on canines of the cats. One experimental group was filled with glass ionomer cement and the other group was filled with zinc phosphate cement . (G-C Co, Japan) The animals of the experimental and control group were sacrificed at 1,2,3,4,6, weeks after the experiment. For comparison of reparative dentin formation pattern in direction of the pulpal and fractured lateral surface, each of them was observed with scanning electron microscope. The findings led to the following conclusions; 1. Reparative dentin of the glass ionomer cement and zinc phosphate cement filling groups were formed on the internal surface of dentin as the shape of hemispherical and spherical with a rough surface. 2. Some of reparative dentin of the glass ionomer cement filling group was started to form at 1 week after experiment, and at 6 weeks after experiment, it had been increased gradually in number and size. 3. Reparative dentin of zinc phosphate cement filling group was formed vigorously, however, gradually was decreased in number and size, and disappeared at 6 weeks after experiment. 4. During the formation of reparative dentin, peritubular dentins were indistinguishable. 5. The diameter of dentinal tubules of reparative dentin has been decreased, during the reparative dentin formed, and it became very irregularly at 6 weeks after experiment.

  • An in vitro study was performed to compare the retentive value of cast post cemented with three commonly used cements and one composite resin. Twenty cast posts were made from twenty extracted lower premolars. The samples were randomly divided into four groups. The first group was cemented with zinc phosphate cement, the second group with polycarboxylate cement, the third group with glass-ionomer cement, and the fourth group with composite resin. The tensile load test was performed on an Instron testing machine with crosshead speed of 2 mm/min and the results were compared statistically. The results were as follows ; 1. The mean value of tensile break force of cemented cast post was 23.36Kg in case of zinc phosphate cement, 16.28Kg in case of polycarboxylate cement, 22.09Kg in case of glass-ionomer cement , and 26.88Kg in case of composite resin. 2. Retention was not significantly different among zinc phosphate cement, glass-ionomer cement and composite resin. 3. Polycarboxylate cement was found to be less retentive than zinc phosphate cement, glass-ionomer cement , and composite resin.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the surface roughness of glass ionomer cement during initial setting time followed by applying surface coating agent. No other finishing or polishing procedure is done and each surface coating agents (varnish, adhesive, gloss, sealant) are used after filling of glass ionomer cement. Surface roughness indices(Ra) are measured and surface contours are obtained electronically by Surfcorder SEF-30D(Kosaka laboratory Ltd., Japan). The results are as follows: 1. During initial setting time, surface roughness increases slightly regardless of surface coating agents. But it is statistically insignificant. (p>0.05) 2. Among surface coating agents used, Ra indices of group using varnish are high significantly compared to other groups regardless of elapsed time.(p<0.05) Among the groups which has used other surface coating agents except for the varnish group, similar Ra index all over the experiment is obtained, when compared to control group (no agent). 3. If no surface treatment is performed, tri-cure glass ionomer cement (Vitremer) has higher Ra Index than light cure glass ionomer cement (Fuji II LC) (t<0.05). But there is no difference between two groups in Ra index if any kinds of agents are applied except for sealant. (t>0.05)

  • This study was to evaluate the cytotoxic effect in vitro and the tissue response within the rat peritoneal cavity to high copper amalgam and glass ionomer-silver cement, suggested for use as a retrograde endodontic filling material. In the cytotoxicity experiment, the radioactively ($^{51}Cr$) labeled L929 mouse fibroblasts were employed to determine the relative cytotoxicity of two experimental materials. Those materials were evaluated immediately after set and after one and seven days setting. In the tissue response experiment, two experimental materials were to evaluate mean peritoneal cellular count, differential cell count and the content of silver and copper in pooled packed cells and eluate samples taken by peritoneal lavage technique, and compared with surgical control after one day. two, four and six weeks of implantation. The results were as following: 1. High copper amalgam exhibited significant cytotoxicity immediately after set but showed no sign of toxicity after one day and seven days setting materials. 2. Glass ionomer-silver cement showed no sign of toxicity immediately after set and after one day and seven days setting. 3. High copper amalgam and glass ionomer-silver cement groups produce no significant difference in the mean peritoneal cell count when compared with the surgical control group after one day, two and four weeks of implantation. Surgical control group exhibited significantly a greater cell count when compared with the High copper amalgam group after six weeks. 4. High copper amalgam group increased significantly in the percentage macrophages after four and six weeks of implantation when compared with surgical control group. 5. The trace metal analysis involved an increased silver content in the elutes and an increased copper content in the packed cells of high copper amalgam group, and an increased silver content in the packed cells and elutes of glass ionomer-silver cement group.

  • PURPOSE. Many dentists use desensitizing agents to prevent hypersensitivity. This study compared and evaluated the effect of two desensitizing agents on the retention of cast crowns when cemented with various luting agents. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ninety freshly extracted human molars were prepared with flat occlusal surface, 6 degree taper and approximately 4 mm axial length. The prepared specimens were divided into 3 groups and each group is further divided into 3 subgroups. Desensitizing agents used were GC Tooth Mousse and $GLUMA^{(R)}$ desensitizer. Cementing agents used were zinc phosphate, glass ionomer and resin modified glass ionomer cement. Individual crowns with loop were made from base metal alloy. Desensitizing agents were applied before cementation of crowns except for control group. Under tensional force the crowns were removed using an automated universal testing machine. Statistical analysis included one-way ANOVA followed by Turkey-Kramer post hoc test at a preset alpha of 0.05. RESULTS. Resin modified glass ionomer cement exhibited the highest retentive strength and all dentin treatments resulted in significantly different retentive values (In Kg.): GLUMA ($49.02{\pm}3.32$) > Control ($48.61{\pm}3.54$) > Tooth mousse ($48.34{\pm}2.94$). Retentive strength for glass ionomer cement were GLUMA ($41.14{\pm}2.42$) > Tooth mousse ($40.32{\pm}3.89$) > Control ($39.09{\pm}2.80$). For zinc phosphate cement the retentive strength were lowest GLUMA ($27.92{\pm}3.20$) > Control ($27.69{\pm}3.39$) > Tooth mousse ($25.27{\pm}4.60$). CONCLUSION. The use of $GLUMA^{(R)}$ desensitizer has no effect on crown retention. GC Tooth Mousse does not affect the retentive ability of glass ionomer and resin modified glass ionomer cement, but it decreases the retentive ability of zinc phosphate cement.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chitosan powder addition on the strengthening of conventional glass ionomer cement. Two types of chitosan powders with different molecular weight were mixed with conventional glass ionomer cement (GIC): low-molecular weight chitosan (CL; 50~190 kDa), high-molecular weight chitosan (CH; 310~375 kDa). The chitosan powders (CL and CH) were separately added into the GIC liquid (0.25-0.5 wt%) under magnetic stirring, or mixed with the GIC powder by ball-milling for 24 h using zirconia balls. The mixing ratio of prepared cement was 2:1 for powder to liquid. Net setting time of cements was measured by ISO 9917-1. The specimens for the compressive strength (CS; $4{\times}6mm$), diametral tensile strength (DTS; $6{\times}4mm$), three-point flexure (FS; $2{\times}2{\times}25mm$) with flexure modulus (FM) were obtained from cements at 1, 7, and 14 days after storing in distilled water at $(37{\pm}1)^{\circ}C$. All mechanical strength tests were conducted with a cross-head speed of 1 mm/min. Data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD post-hoc test. The mechanical properties of conventional glass ionomer cement was significantly enhanced by addition of 0.5 wt% CL to cement liquid (CS, DTS), or by addition of 10 wt% CH (FS) to cement powder. The CL particles incorporated into the set cement were firmly bonded to the GIC matrix (SEM). Within the limitation of this study, the results indicated that chitosan powders can be successfully added to enhance the mechanical properties of conventional GIC.
