The effects of the stress ratio and the fiber orientation(0.deg./90.deg. and .+-.45.deg.) to the load direction on the fracture behavior of the glass/epoxy plain woven composites were studied. The tests were carried out using compact tension specimens under both static and fatigue loading. The values of $k_{a}$ obtained from the energy release rate are independent of notch depth(a/w=0.2~0.6) for the 0.deg./90.deg. specimens, but decreases with an increase in a/w for the .+-.45.deg. specimens. And $k_{q}$ has higher values than $k_{ASTM}$ has been evaluated by the ASTM E399 test procedure. It is shown in the relation between fatigue crack growth rate da/dN and stress intensity factor range .DELTA.K using modified shape correction factor that da/dN decreases with a decrease in stress ratio and is lower for .+-..deg. specimens than for 0.deg./90.deg. These phenomena can be explained by the crack deflection to the load direction.n.n.

One of the principal problems encountered in the use of glass fiber reinforced Plastic composites(GFRP) is to establish an active fiber surface to achieve maximum adhesion between resin and fiber surface. In order to develope new process to overcome the disadvantage of chemical agent, we have studied the effect of reactive plasma glass surface treatment on the electrical and mechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites. It is found that the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the composites treated with plasma is improved especially in the dielectric strength by 20% and tensile strength by 15%, whereas the tan $\delta$ is decreased significantly.
Mechanical properties of fiber reinforced composites were affected to fiber volume fractions (FVF) and interfacial property by sizing agent conditions. An optimum interface can relieve stress concentration by transferring the mechanical stress from the matrix resin to the reinforcements effectively, and thus can result in the performance of the composites. The interfacial properties and wettability between the epoxy resin and glass fiber (GF) were evaluated for different sizing agent conditions and FVFs. The surface energies of epoxy resin and different sizing agent treated GFs were calculated using dynamic and static contact angle measurements. The work of adhesion, Wa was calculated by using surface energies of epoxy matrix and GFs. The wettability was evaluated via the GF tow capillary test. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was evaluated by microdroplet pull-out test. Finally, the optimized GFRP manufacturing conditions could be obtained by using wettability and interfacial property.

In order to analyse the degradation process of epoxy/glass fiber for outdoor condition, FRP laminate was exposed to the wavelength of ultraviolet rays and evaluated by comparing contact angle, surface resistivity, surface potential decay, and ESCA spectrum respectively. As irradiation energy are increased, the surface properties were steeply decreased in the range of 300[nm]. But the measured values within the scope of400[nm]∼440[nm] showed a increase as compared with the untreated ones. Also, fromthe result of ESCA spectrum, it was confirmed plenty of oxygen groups on the spot showing the maximum decrease of surface properties and the existence of ether groups on the surface of coloring phase. We can conclude that the degradation phenomena on the surface of epoxy composites are dominated by the induction of ester and carboxyl groups.
In this paper, the thermal and flame properties of GFRP with various flame retardant(aluminum trihydrate, antimony trioxide) compositions have been investigated by thermal analysis and flammability tests(LOI test, flammability 45 degree test). The flame and mechanical properties(hardness, tensile strength, modulus) of general purpose grade glass fiber/unsaturated polyester composite with flame retardant composition have been also evaluated. The effect of cure pressure on the flame properties of aerospace grade glass fiber/epoxy composite was investigated. Considering the flame and mechanical property of composite, we could determine the optimum flame retardant composition(ATH 10∼20 phr). Test results show that the flame property of glass fiber/epoxy composite is considerably affected by cure pressure conditions.

The Aluminum conductor composite core consists of fast-curing thermosetting epoxy used as reinforcements and carbon fiber and glass fiber used as matrix. In this study, we have investigated fast curing epoxy cured products used for composite core(Aluminum Conductor Composite Core, ACCC). Tetrafunctional epoxy(PA 806) was used as a multifunctional epoxy, along with two kinds of curing agents, MNAn(5-Methyl-5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride) and HHPA(Hexahydrophthalic Anhydride), to make an epoxy cured product and their properties were evaluated. Optimum conditions are confirmed by varying the content of curing accelerator in the selected epoxy and curing agent.
The effects of sizing agent on the final mechanical properties of the glass fiber/unsaturated polyester composites were investigated by contact angle measurements at room temperature. In this work, glass fibers were coated by poly(vinyl alcohol), polyester, and epoxy type sizing agent and each property was compared. Contact angles of the sized glass fiber were measured by the wicking method based on Washburn equation using deionized water and diiodomethane as testing liquids. As an experimental result, the surface free energy calculated from contact angle showed the highest value in case of the glass fiber coated by epoxy sizing agent. From measurements of interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and fracture toughness ( $K_{IC}$ ) of the composites, it was found that the sizing treatment on fibers could improve the fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion, resulting in growing the final mechanical properties. This was due to the enhanced surface free energy of glass fibers in a composite system.

The cell modeling homogenization method to derive the constitutive equation considering the microstructures of the fiber reinforced composites has been previously developed for composites with simple microstructures such as 2D plane composites and 3D rectangular shaped composites. Here, the method has been further extended for 3D circular braided com-posites, utilizing B-spline curves to properly describe the more complex geometry of 3D braided composites. For verification purposes, the method has been applied for orthotropic elastic properties of the 3D circular braided glass fiber reinforced com-posite, in particular for the tensile property. Prepregs of the specimen have been fabricated using the 3D braiding machine through RTM (resin transfer molding) with epoxy as a matrix. Experimentally measured uniaxial tensile properties agreed well with predicted values obtained for two volume fractions.
In this paper, two different experiments, namely, salt water spray and salt water immersion, were performed to reproduce the contact of composites with the seawater for three kinds of woven fabric composite material systems which would be used for the WIG(wing in ground effect)craft. After aging 140 days in the salt water environment, material properties of carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy composite such as tensile, compressive and shear stiffness and strength, and inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) were measured. By comparing baseline material properties with degraded ones, the effects of the salt water environment on the composite mechanical properties were evaluated. From the experiments, it was confirmed that the difference in aging conditions had very small influence on composite properties. And it was found that tensile strength of carbon/epoxy composites showed little degradation, but much more degradation was observed in glass/epoxy composites. And large degradations on matrix dominant properties were observed. The salt water could damage the fiber-matrix interface, matrix properties and the glass fiber.

Materials, matrices mixed with various kinds of conductive or magnetic powder, such as ferrite, have been used as the electromagnetic wave absorbing ones, so called RAM(radar absorbing material). The structure that does not only have electromagnetic waves absorbing property like RAM but also supports loads is called RAS(radar absorbing structure). One of the existing manufacturing process of RAS is to compound with conductive powders the glass fiber-reinforced composite with good permeability and the ability to support loads. The process, however, causes a number of problems, such as the degradation in the mechanical properties of the composite, especially, interlamina shear strength. In this study, mechanical properties of glass fabric/epoxy composite containing 7wt% carbon black powders were measured and compared with pure glass fabric/epoxy composites.
