  • Dujeong-dong site of Cheonan is known as the site of Baekje period in the first half of the fourth century. This study investigated the visible properties and the chemical composition of the 18 pieces of the glass found in the site, and considered scientific properties and periodic interrelationship of the glass on the basis of the analysis result. The observation of the visible properties and microstructure of ancient glass was performed with both an electron microscope and an optical microscope, and the chemical composition was conducted by way of both quantitative and qualitative analysis using Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectrometer(EDS). In the analysis result, various chemical composition systems are identified in the glass beads of Dujeong-dong site, such as lead-barium, soda and potash glass, and also different shapes were found such as gold foil glass beads, tubular beads, and round beads. It is estimated that the classification of glass by means of its chemical composition was also closely related to the color of glass.

  • Borosilicate glass dissolution is an important chemical process that impacts the glass durability as nuclear waste form that may be used for high-level radioactive waste disposal. Experiments reported that the glass dissolution rates are strongly dependent on the bulk composition. Because some relationship exists between glass composition and molecular-structure distribution (e.g., non-bridging oxygen content of $SiO_4$ unit and averaged coordination number of B), the composition-dependent dissolution rates are attributed to the bulk structural changes corresponding to the compositional variation. We examined Na borosilicate glass structures by performing classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for four different chemical compositions ($xNa_2O{\cdot}B_2O_3{\cdot}ySiO_2$). Our MD simulations demonstrate that glass surfaces have significantly different chemical compositions and structures from the bulk glasses. Because glass surfaces forming an interface with solution are most likely the first dissolution-reaction occurring areas, the current MD result simply that composition-dependent glass dissolution behaviors should be understood by surface structural change upon the chemical composition change.

  • By adding La₂O₃ to optical multicomponent glass composition, after making mother glass and core fiber that enable to enlarge the infrared transmittance region, then surveyed the optical properties. Through thermal analysis of the glass abstained by melt-quenching after selecting stable basic composition on devitrification and replace SiO₂ by 4-12wt% La₂O₃. As La₂O₃ increases up to l2wt% transition temperature, refractive index, density, deformation temperature increased, whereas thermal expansion coefficient decreased. As a result of inspectig transmittance in UV/VIS/IR region, visable region indicated the decrease of transmittance by increasing the La₂O₃ and transmittance region was enlarged by increasing the La₂O₃ in IR region. Also, fabricate core fiber at 820℃ and severy the optical loss we could fact that La₂O₃ composition added 12wt% showed the minimum optical loss.

  • The glass of E-glass fiber composition was fabricated by using refused coal ore which is obtained as by-product from Dogye coal mine in Samcheok. We used silica-alumina refused coal ore which has low carbon content relatively, and the amount of refused coal ore has been changed from 0 to 35 % in batch composition. E-glass was fabricated by the melting of mixed batch materials at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs with different refused coal ore composition of 0~35 %. We obtained a transparent and clear glass with high visible light transmittance value of 81~84%, thermal expansion coefficient of $5.39{\sim}5.61{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ and softening point of $851{\sim}860^{\circ}C$. The glass fiber samples were also obtained through fiberizing equipment at $1150^{\circ}C$, and tested chemical resistance and tensile strength to evaluate the mechanical property as a reinforced glass fiber of composite material. As the result, we identified the properties of E-glass fiber by using refused coal ore are plenty good enough compare to that of normal E-glass without refused coal ore, and confirmed the possibility of refused coal ore as for the raw material of E-glass fiber.

  • The composition of glasses to be suitable for crystallisation of $BaTiO_3$ by heat-treatment and the dielectric properties of the glass-ceramics were investigated. The composition of the family of glasses was defined by the formula $\chi$ $BaTiO_3 + (100-$\chi$)Al_2O_3$.$2SiO_2$ and excess BaO. Data were presented on dielectric constant and loss tangent at various frequencies. The effects of excess BaO on dielectric properties were investigated. The additions of $Na_2O$ and $Nb_2O_5$ shifted the Curite temperature of these glass-ceramics. The glass composition which was able to be melted at 145$0^{\circ}C$ and moulded as homogeneous glass phase without devitrification should contain $Al_2O_3$.$2SiO_2$ more than 30 mole %. The more the amount of additive BaO increased, the more dielectric constant increased. When the maximum heat-treatment temperature was 105$0^{\circ}C$, we obtained higher dielectric constant than that of 95$0^{\circ}C$. The dielectric constant and the dielectric loss were stable at frequencies between 5$\times$104 and 107 cycle per second. When $Na_2O$ and $Nb_2O_5$ were added, the Curie temperature, presented at 14$0^{\circ}C$ to 15$0^{\circ}C$, shifted to lower temperature. Therefore, the glass-ceramics having high dielectric constant at room temperature were obtained.

  • Effects of additives on electrical properties and microstructure of MLCC X7R dielectrics have been investigated. The additives of glass frit or oxide form were added in the same main composition by the different powder processing conditions. As a result of the dielectric property and microstructure analysis, the composition having the glass layer with dopant concentration gradient showed the excellent dielectric properties. The MLCCs were fabricated with the excellent composition and all dielectric properties satisfied the X7R requirements.

  • An estimation method of glass viscosity using Lakatos model is one of the best way to calculate the viscosity of soda-lime glass. The glass viscosity is obtained by inputting a glass composition consisting of SiO2, Al2O3, Na2O, K2O, CaO and MgO to the Lakatos model. A series of composition of glass bottles was obtained once a month for 10 months from a soda-lime glass bottle fabrication line and isokom temperatures at the viscosity of log η = 3, 6.6, 10 and 12.3 were calculated. It was found that the isokom temperature at log η = 3 and log η = 6.6 was closely related to the value of (Si+Al)/O and 1/Na, respectively.

  • This paper presents investigations on 60 glass beads excavated from floorless tombs of Eunpyeong Newtown site to figure out composition and lead isotope ratio by SEM-EDS and TIMS, which show the difference between their compositions and Pb provenance of lead glass. The results of the composition analysis are that excavated glass are mainly divided into Potash glass($K_2O$-CaO-$SiO_2$) and Potash-lead glass($K_2O$-PbO-$SiO_2$) and the samples excavated from III-3 floorless tombs No.1005 are presumed not glass but Quartz. The transparent 9 lead glasses excavated from II-3 floorless tomb No.101 and III-3 floorless tomb No.908 seem to be manufactured by the same raw material at same site because the concentration of their compositions are well accorded with each other and deviations of them are very limited. As a result of principal component analysis(PCA), glass beads excavated are largely assort to two groups, Potash glass and Potash lead glass as well. That is, glass beads excavated from Eunpyeoung Newtown sites are quite different two types of main composition. In addition, the results of Pb provenance analysis used in lead glass confirm that most lead glass are significantly correlated with galena of northern China.

  • The ferrimagnetic glass-ceramics in the system Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2 for hyperthermia were investigated. Glasses could be prepared up to the content of 40 wt% of Fe2O3 and below the weight ratio of 1.0 of CaO/SiO2. The maximum saturation magnetization and the maximum coercive force were 29.85 emu/g and 340.1 Oe respectively, for a glass 40Fe2O3.20CaO.40SiO2 composition heat-treated at 95$0^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours. And for a glass 40Fe2O3.30CaO.30SiO2 composition the maximum saturation magnetization and the maximum coercive force were 18.47 emu/g and 374.4 Oe heat-treated at 1,00$0^{\circ}C$ and 90$0^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours respectively. The maximum hysteresis loss was 1,726.3 cal/g for a glass 40Fe2O3.20CaO.40SiO2 composition heat-treated at 95$0^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours. It was found that the ferrimagnetic Fe2O3.CaO.SiO2 glass-ceramics was little injurious to human body as results of biocompatibility test and biotoxicity test.

  • Glass slides were chemically etched with sulfuric acid using five different methods. we investigated the effects of the chemical etching conditions on such properties as chemical composition, surface roughness, and the thermal stability of the glass. Sodium and carbon atoms in the surface of the glass are effectively eliminated by chemical etching with sulfuric acid. The glass slides were boiled for 30 min in 95% sulfuric acid and were depth profiled at room temperature with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the Na ls signal was not detected in the detection limit of XPS. Surface morphology of the glass was very different depending on the concentration of sulfuric acid. The surface of the glass etched with 50% sulfuric acid was rougher than that of glass etched with 95% sulfuric acid. The sodium concentration of the glass boiled for 30 min in 95% sulfuric acid was nearly zero at the glass surface, and the sodium composition changed very little with annealing temperatures up to 35$0^{\circ}C$ in a vacuum environment. However the sulfur concentration at the glass surface due to the sulfuric acid increased with increasing temperature.
