The relationship between homeownership and participation in giving and volunteering overall indicates that homeowners are more likely to give and participate in volunteering organizations than renters. This study compared 'giving and participation in volunteering between homeowners(n=6,078) and renters(3,587) in the 14th Korean Welfare Panel Survey data collected in 2019. The outcome measure of study is a binary outcome of giving and volunteering participation. This study accounted for a bias arising from selection on observables. Specifically, this study employed a recursive bivariate probit model to simultaneously estimate respondents' participation in giving and volunteering participation and their selection of homeownership. Findings from this study have provided some evidence that homeowners and renters have different behaviors in giving and volunteering participation. Finally, issues relating to homeownership and social outcomes were discussed. Implications for social work practice and research were further discussed.
This paper attempts to analyze citizens' giving behavior by household income level. Particularly, it focuses on participation and amount of secular giving by using 'Social Survey'in 2011, 2013, and 2015 from the Bureau of Statistics and employing Heckman selection model for statistical analysis. This study shows that citizens' participation has a proportional tendency by their income level. Similar to participation of secular giving, citizens' giving amount has also a proportional tendency by their income level. However, the degree of proportional tendency seems not to be significant in the case of amount of secular giving. This empirical analysis promotes understanding of participation and amount of secular giving by citizens' income section in Korea by showing the differences. This paper provides meaningful empirical understanding regarding citizens' secular giving behavior by their income level. In addition, it offers important clues to motivate relevant prospective studies and develop social agenda which contribute to strengthening giving culture in Korea.
In the modern society, a growth in the non-profit sector and a decrease in the government budget on social welfare result in a greater need of individual giving and volunteering. Therefore, in order to manage non-profit organizations effectively, it is necessary to encourage citizen participation in giving and volunteering through identifying various factors affecting giving and volunteering. In order to identify what factors are affecting participation in giving and volunteering and whether the relationship between giving and volunteering is multiplicative or compensatory, this study uses multinomial logistic regression analysis by categorizing four groups based on the participation types of giving and volunteering. The research findings confirmed that common factors such as religion and satisfaction with leisure time were still significant, and specific factors were also found among factors affecting participation in giving and volunteering. Especially, this study identified that factors affecting giving and volunteering differ according to household income, education level, employment status, gender and social relationship satisfaction. The findings confirmed that giving and volunteering are compensatory behaviors. Finally, the implications of this study were discussed. A differential strategy for giving and volunteering is needed to encourage citizen participation in non-profit organizations.
This study is targeted to understand the giving of time and money among citizens in Seoul. It explores predictors of different combinations of giving behaviors: only volunteering, only donating, doing both, and neither. In exploring predictors, it also considers the effects of intensity in giving with differential measurement of general participation and regular participation. For the analysis, this study utilizes Seoul Welfare Panel Survey Data in 2008 and 2010 and employes a multi-nominal logistic regression model with selection of citizens' demographic factors, pro-social attitude factors, and psycho-social factors on these four type of giving behaviors. The findings show that previous giving experiences(+) and religious activities(+) have statistically significant effects on both selective and combined giving behavior. Gender(woman), income(+), education(+) have statistically significant effects on giving behaviors(only donating and doing both) related with donation. In the case of employment state, unemployment is significantly related to volunteering while employment is significantly related to donating. Finally, happiness(+) has significantly positive effect on intensive giving such as regular giving rather than general giving. This analysis has made a start in a new area of inquiry attempting to explain different giving behaviors with broadening and promoting understanding on giving behaviors. Moreover, it raises several implications for future research and strategic practice for resource mobilization of NPOs.
Corporate interest and participation to the corporate philanthropy have increased since sustainable business management and win-win business management is on the rise to be the major task of the corporation, due to global economic recession and shrinking of consumption market. Employee participating corporate philanthropy, such as giving or volunteering, are especially increasing recently. This study analyzed the effects of giving and volunteering participation of the employees on job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior mediated by recognition and attitude about corporate philanthropy. Structural equation modeling was employed for statistical analyses. As a result of the study, it is clear that giving participation of the employees has a positive influence in job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior, mediated by the recognition and attitude about corporate philanthropy. However, the effects of volunteering participation of the employees on job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior mediated by recognition and attitude about corporate philanthropy was non-significant. Based on this result from the study, factors to increase the inner stakeholder effect of employee participating corporate philanthropy are proposed.
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of altruism and social trust on giving behavior for COVID-19 among citizens and the differences by gender and age. To this end, this study conducted analyses with a sample of 2,006 regular citizens from the Giving Korea 2020 survey constructed by the Beautiful Foundation. The main analysed results are as follows. First, citizens' altruism and social trust significantly positively influenced giving behavior for COVID-19. Specifically, when altruism increased by one level, the likelihood of giving participation increased about 3.00 times and the likelihood of giving intention increased about 3.60 times. Second, the influences of citizens' altruism and social trust on giving behavior for COVID-19 were moderated by gender and age. Whereas the influence of altruism on giving participation was more pronounced for women, the influence of altruism on giving intention was more pronounced for young citizens. Also, the influence of social trust on giving intention was more pronounced for young citizens. Based on the results, this study discussed strategies for citizens' giving behavior to overcome a disaster like COVID-19.
Giving behavior can be defined to be a behavior intended to benefit the society's charity works and public works via sharing one's financial resources. The determinants of giving behavior largely consist of sociodemographic factors, such as the income, age, gender, religion, education level, residential areas, and tax deduction policy, etc. This paper considers the income level, self-esteem, and perceived responsibility toward social welfare, as the major research variables. Statistical results, based on 2014 Korean Welfare Panel data, show that the income level and self-esteem have positive influence on participation intention in charitable giving. However, welfare responsibility has negative impact on participation intention. Second, household income was the only salient, negative factor for giving efforts defined as the amount of donation over income, implying that the higher income brackets are giving less money relative to their income level, than those with lower income level. Contrary to our expectation, self-esteem and welfare responsibility were not statistically significant explanatory variables.
Social network services based on openness, connectedness, and mass participation are reshaping many aspects of how companies conduct business and create value for their customers. For instance, Facebook and Twitter are expected to play a pivotal role as a new communication channel through which companies-forge close relationships with their customers for co-creation of value for mutual benefits. Given the potential of social network services, it is not surprising that many companies have strategically invested in social network services to reach out to customers. Despite the growing interest in social network services as a platform to connect companies and their customers, few guidelines exist about how managers can effectively utilize social network services in forging relationships with their customers. As such, scholars should pay greater attention to how firms can successfully develop relationships with their customers on social network services. In particular, this study employs the S-O-R (stimulus-organism-response) framework as a theoretical lens to develop a research model that explains customers' participation in the value co-creation platform that companies opened on Twitter. According to the S-O-R framework, certain types of individuals' behaviors can be best understood based on a causal link from environmental stimulus to organism, and response. We apply the S-O-R framework to understand how ubiquitous connectivity (stimuli) can influence customers' experience (organism) with companies on Twitter, which in turn influence their participation behavior (response). Two steps have been undertaken to empirically test the research model. First, we conducted a content analysis of tweets written by customers who follow companies on Twitter. As a result, we found event/promotion participation, company support, and giving feedback as three specific types of customer participation behavior. Second, we conducted a web-based survey to test research hypotheses in the research model. Participations in the survey were solicited to customers who followed companies on Twitter. As a result, a total of 115 respondents have completed the survey. Data were analyzed using the partial least square (PLS) technique. The results of data analysis suggest that ubiquitous connectivity (stimuli) had strong positive effects on perceive usefulness, perceived enjoyment, and perceived intimacy (organism). Perceived intimacy showed positive effects on customer participation behavior (response), such as event participation, company support, and giving feedback. Perceived enjoyment was found to have strong positive effects on company support and giving feedback. On the other hand, perceived usefulness did not have significant impacts on the three types of customer participation behavior.
The purpose of this study was to explore the influences of personality and the money attitude on the giving of money by university students. 275 questionnaires were used for the statistical analysis of this study. The questionnaire includes attitudes towards money and giving money, whether or not respondents had a NGO membership, the level of participation into volunteer service, and other demographic information. The results of the study show that, female, middle class students with no religious preference tended to be more positiveabout giving money. There was a positive relationship between citizenship and giving money attitudes. It means that more actively attended citizenship activities were by students, the more positive attitudes towards giving money they had. The compulsive & consumptive types were more sardonic than others. The managerial types perceived less negatively giving organization. Based on these results, the following have been suggested in order to expand personal giving attitudes, voluntary programs, and activities related to the civil society for students. There needs to be a financial management education program with a balance struck between expenditure categories of consumption and non-consumption, including giving money to others.
The purpose of this study is to analyse the realities of fundraising and distribution of the local community chest in Korea. Until now little empirical study has been conducted concerning the culture of giving. Using the sample of 900 citizens selected from 7 cities and another sample of 230 from policy-making group in 16 local community chest, this study analysed empirical1y how the capacity, motivation and opportunity of the prospective donors are related to giving and the current issues of fundraising and distribution. According to the results of analysis, the level of motivation in giving culture is very low. Also it was found that religious beliefs is the most important motivating factor in giving. Participation in volunteer activities is another important factor to influencing giving. Some effective fundraising strategies are suggested including strengthening the motivation of prospective donors, workplace donation and joint-fundraising with religious organization or other foundation, coordinating fundraising activities between the community chest and other social welfare agencies. Program-oriented distribution and change of some distribution standards are stressed as an effective distribution strategy.
