  • The neurotoxicity induced by L-glutamate in primary cultures of rat cortical cells could be attenuated by diterpene constituents of Ginkgo biloba leaves, ginkgolides A, B and C. At the concentration of 100 nM, ginkgolides up-regulated the activity of glutathione reductase in primary cultures of rat cortical cells exposed to 100 ${\mu}$M glutamate. Furthermore, ginkgolides increased the content of reduced glutathione in glutamate-treated cortical cells. However, ginkgolides showed little effect in reducing superoxide dismutase activity. Ginkgolides did, however, markedly block the production of malondialdehyde, a byproduct of lipid peroxidation in glutamate-treated rat cortical cells.

  • This study was carried out to investigate lead contamination in the leaves of roadside trees and the cause of yellow-brown symptom of leaves in Jinju and Daegu city. After the leaves were collected and dried in 105$^{\circ}C$ drying oven from September to October in 1974, the samples were used for analysis of the lead contents in 1976. The roadside trees in the two cities were mostly the four kinds of Ginkgo biloba L., Thuja orientalis L., Platanus orientalis L. var. acerifolia AIT. and Prunus pseudo-cerasus $LINDL{\times}Prunus$ subhirtella MIQ. The lead contents in the leaves of roadside trees in Daegu city was higher than that of Jinju city. The lead contamination of the evergreen trees of roadside was higher than that of the deciduous trees. In Jinju city the site of the highest contents of lead in the leaves was revealed with Jinju station(0.73ppm), the next site was revealed with the road(0.16ppm) between Namgang bridge and Jinju middle school, and the lowest site was generally beside the roads of suburbs (0.07ppm). Because of the low contents of lead in the leaves, it was found that the yellow-brown symptoms of leaves were not caused by the lead toxicity.

  • This study was conducted to determine the contents of heavy metals in leaves of roadside trees according to different growth stages in Daegu city. The orders of heavy metal contents in leaves of roadside tree and soil were Fe>Mn>Zn>Pb>Cu>Cr>Cd and Fe>Mn>Zn>Cu>Pb>Cr>Cd, respectively. The contents of heavy metals in leaves of roadside trees and soil showed an increasing tendency as the levels of traffic volume increased. The contents of heavy metals in loaves on October were higher than those on May. Zelkova serrate and Ginkgo biloba showed high contents of Cr, Cd and Pb.

  • Ginkgetin was previously reported as an inhibitor of group II phospholipase A$_2$. It also inhibited in vitro arachidonate release from the activated macrophages and lymphocyte proliferation. These previous studies suggested an anti-inflammatory nature of ginkgetin, especially on chronic inflammation. In fact, ginkgetin showed potent anti-inflammatory activity against rat adjuvant-induced arthritis, a chronic inflammatory animal model, with comparable analgesic activity. In order to investigate the action mechanisms, tumor necrosis factor and interferone release were studied from human PMMC. It was found that ginkgetin clearly inhibited release of these cytoknes from human PMMC. Ginkgetin was also found to inhibit immunoglobulin M production at 1 - 10 uM. These results may contribute to antiarthritic activity of ginkgetin in vivo.

  • This study was conducted to identify wood species for 51 excavated wooden shoes in the 12~16 Chungjin district of Jongno. Wood species of 31 Pinus sp., 12 Torreya nucifera S. et Z., 4 Ginkgo biloba L., 2 Salix sp., 1 Kalopanax pictus (Thunb.) Nakai. and 1 Morus sp. were identified. Wood used for wooden shoes was a species that can be mainly obtained easily around. Among them, Torreya nucifera S. et Z. grows in warm temperate zone of Korea, which shows that interregional cooperation has occurred.

  • The neurotoxicity induced by L-glutamate in primary cultures of rat cortical cells could be attenuated by sesquiterpene constituent of Ginkgo biloba leaves, bilobalide. At the c oncentration of 100 nM, Bilobalide elevated the combined levels of reduced/oxidized glutathione in rat cortical cells exposed to 100 ${\mu}$M glutamate. Furthermore, bilobalide promoted a reduction in superoxide dismutase activity in glutamate-treated cells. Finally, bilobalide markedly inhibited the production of malondialdehyde. a measure of lipid peroxidation, in glutamate-treated rat cortical cells.

  • Observation was made on early ontogeny of vascular cambium in the cotyledonary node of Pinus koraiensis seedling in order to clarify the cambial ontogeny of the node which was hardly elongated. In transverse view, the derivatives by the early periclinal divisions at the outer region of the procambial strands differentiated to protophloem with establishing a certain degree of radial seriations. Later, some cells in the central region of the procambial strands begin divide periclinally, eventually the cells, differentiate gradually to the vascular cambium. In tangential view, early procambium is consisted of homogeneous short cells with transverse end walls which are tansformed into the long cells and short cells gradually. The long cells continue intrusive growth and the short cells repeat transverse division. Finally, the long and short cells differentiated to cambial fusiform initials and ray initials respectively. In tangential section, the differentiation pattern of cambial initials resembles that of the stem of Ginkgo biloba. But in transverse view, the characteristics in the origin of vascular cambium of the cotyledonary node resembles that of root. The vascular cambium in cotyledonary node is completed after eleven prophylls were formed.

  • Administration of Scopolamine can be considered a psychopharmacological model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We made an animal model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) by administering Scopolamine to Blab/c mice. In this study, we investigated the effects of Resplex Alpha on memory impairment and cognitive function in mice in a mouse animal model of Scopolamine-induced memory impairment. Through Y-mazed and passive avoidance behavioral assays, we observed that Resplex Alpha recovered Scopolamine-induced short-term memory and cognitive functions. The results of our study imply that Resplex Alpha may be beneficial in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease (AD).
