Methods: The guideline was updated according to the manuals developed by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN), and a Handbook for Clinical Practice Guideline Developer Version 10. Results: The updated nursing practice guideline for prevention of VTE was consisted of 16 domains, 46 subdomains, and 216 recommendations. The recommendations in each domain were: 4 general issues, 8 assessment of risk and bleeding factors, 5 interventions for prevention of VTE, 18 mechanical interventions, 36 pharmacological interventions, 36 VTE prevention starategies for medical patients, 25 for cancer patients, 13 for pregnancy, 8 for surgical patients, 7 for thoractic and cardiac surgery, 16 for orthopedic surgery, 10 for cranial and spinal surgery, 5 for vascular surgery, 13 for other surgery, 3 educations and information, and 2 documentation and report. For these recommendations, the level of evidence was 32.1% for level I, 51.8% for level II, and 16.1% for level III according to the infectious diseases society of America (IDSA) rating system. A total of 112 new recommendations were developed and 49 previous recommendations were deleted. Conclusion: The updated nursing practice guideline for prevention of VTE is expected to serve as an evidence-based practice guideline for prevention of VTE in South Korea. It is recommended that this guideline will disseminate to clinical nursing settings nationwide to improve the effectiveness of prevention of VTE practice.
In this study we review the selected articles on elderly health and medical care published in the Journal of the Korea Gerontological Society (JKGS) in the last 40 years, and make suggestions for future research directions for gerontological health and medical care issues. Of all the 40 year publications from volume 1 (1980) to 38 (2017), we first examined the 30th anniversary review on the subject of gerontological nursing care and healthcare policies published in JKGS from 1980 (vol. 1, No. 1) to 2008 (vol. 28, No. 2), and reviewed recent 237 researches of this decade (out of all 655 articles from 2008, vol. 28, No. 3 to 2017, vol. 38, No. 4). We could find the following trends. Firstly, the analysis of the primary authors in the past 10 years revealed that those in public health, nursing and other health-related including physical education areas have dealt the subjects focusing on physical health while those in social welfare mostly on mental health. That is, physical health has been the prime subject of researches in the health and medical care area. Secondly, in the same period quantitative researches were accounted for 89.9%, which is similar to the trend of the first 30 years 81.5 %. On the other hand, qualitative studies were only 11 cases and the focus group interview were the most frequently used method comprising 33.3% among them. Thirdly, the non-experimental researches in the past 10 years comprise 65.4%, which was 82.7% in 1980 2008 period, indicating the increasing trend in experimental researches to deal with the issues in medical and healthcare fields. Lastly, the subjects of the researches were mostly the elders who are healthy, residents of city areas, or home dwellers, and 60% of them were over 65 years old in the past 10 years while the proportion was 42.7% in the previous review period. 81.6 % of the researches in the past 10 years was dealing both genders, slightly decreased trend compared to 88.5% of the previous review period. This study reveals that the researches in non-experimental physical health remains the main stream of JKGS despite the efforts by some researchers to diversify the methods and subjects. Systematic and in-depth researches employing multidisciplinary, qualitative, longitudinal and meta-analytical approaches are called for to guide the gerontolgical health issues with preventive and proactive perspectives.

This study was performed to estimate stressful life events, self-esteem and perceived health status in the elderly persons and to compare degree of self-esteem and perceived health status according to experience of stressful life events and general characteristics. The data was collected from 179 elders in a rural community. Data collection was done from October 20 to December 6, 1997. A comparison of self-esteem and perceived health status by experience of stressful life events and general characteristics was summarized as follows : 1) Eighty three persons, $46.4\%$ of the surveyed, have experienced stressful life events, including disease(54 persons) and death of family member(l2 persons). 2) Thirty eight percents of the surveyed persons evaluated they are not healthy. The average score of perceived health status of the elderly was 2.88± .92 for the scale of 5, which represents the healthiest status. 3) There were significant differences on the self-esteem score in the elderly according to having a spouse or not(t=3.51. p=.00l), having family members living together or not(t=2.98. p=.003) and socioeconomic status(F=7.08. p=.00l). 4) There were significant differences on the perceived health status in the elderly according to experience of stressful life events(t=3.51. p=.00l), having family members living together or not(t=2.09, p= .038) and socioeconomic status(F=6.56, p=.002). 5) Positive correlation was observed between self-esteem and perceived health(r= .5037, p=.000). The above results imply that support of family and society should be reinforced to improve self-respect and health of aged persons, and that it is desirable to build up social and economic environment promoting health status through daily life.

Purpose: This study examines the nursing-related contents in the middle, and high school textbooks that follows the National Common Basic Curriculum in China, with a purpose of providing basis for establishing a desirable nursing image. Method: A total of 229 New Curriculum Standard Experiment textbooks published by China People's Education Press in 2007 were analyzed using contents analysis method. Result: Total nursing-related contents in the 229 textbooks were 90 cases, with a frequency of 0.39 case per one book. Common image of nurse is traditional, i.e., it is women's job. which has traditional feminine characteristics. Conclusions: Nursing related contents were decreased in the higher level education. The descriptions of tasks and roles of nurses were very short in any school years. These platitude and superficial descriptions were old-fashioned and unable to deliver correct information about nursing and nurses to the students.
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to develop a nursing assessment tool for senior center nurses, and to test its feasibility and content validity. Methods: The study utilized a psychometric test design. Preliminary items were developed based on geriatric health needs and Gordon's 11 domains of functioning health. Initially, the tool was evaluated for content validity and feasibility. Then, it was administered among 195 older adults in a senior center by a gerontological nurse practitioner. Data were analyzed to describe the nursing problems of the senior center older adults. Results: The final version of the nursing assessment tool consisted of 27 items. The internal consistency, measured with the Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, was .74. The result of the assessment showed that senior center older adults had high nursing needs in the area of management of chronic diseases (hypertension, diabetes, and lipids), dental care, community relations, safety, elder abuse, health behaviors (such as drinking), mental health (depression, suicide, and cognitive function), and health consultations. Conclusion: The new tool was feasible for use with senior center participants, and it was evaluated as having high content validity by senior center nurses.
The purpose of this study was to identify the barrier factors of health behaviors of urban and rural elderly and to compare the health behaviors and level of barriers between two groups, and finally to get the basic informations about the adequate nursing strategies to promote the health state of urban and rural elderly. The subjects of this study were 177 over the age of 65, 81 elderly lived in Seoul and 96 elderly lived in rural areas. The instruments for this study were the health behavior scale(14 items) and the barrier scale (118 items) developed by Gu et al(2003). For the data analysis, SPSS PC program was utilized for descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$- test, t-test, Pearson correlation. The results of this study were ; 1. The mean score of health behaviors (range 1-4) was 2.69 in urban elderly and 2.33 in rural elderly ; there was significant difference(t=5.03, P=.00). 2. There were significant differences in levels of barriers(range 1-3) between the two groups, such as calcium intake(t=-3.16, P=.00), regular exercise(t=-3.80, P=.00), exercise time(t=-5.54, P=.00), use of stress reduction method(t=-3.45, P=.00), regular check up(t=-3.89, P=.00), vaccination(t=-3.83, P=.00). Higher levels of barriers were found in rural elderly than in urban elderly. 3. Lack of habituation, lack of will power and lack of knowledge in calcium intake; lack of time, lack of habituatuion, lack of family support, lack of will power and lack of environment in exercise; lack of perceived benefit, lack of time, lack of will power and lack of knowledge in use of stress reduction method; lack of time, lack of interest, lack of habituation and lack of will power in disease prevention were significantly higher in rural elderly than in urban elderly. In the conclusion, nursing interventions should be planned based on the social environment of elderly. To promote the health state of elderly, interventions to decrease the barrier levels and to reduce the barrier factors to health behaviors should be implemented.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and test the effects of an emotional intelligence program for undergraduate nursing students. Methods: The study design was a mixed method research. Participants were 36 nursing students (intervention group: 17, control group: 19). The emotional intelligence program was provided for 4 weeks (8 sessions, 20 hours). Data were collected between August 6 and October 4, 2013. Quantitative data were analyzed using Chi-square, Fisher's exact test, t-test, repeated measure ANOVA, and paired t-test with SPSS/WIN 18.0. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. Results: Quantitative results showed that emotional intelligence, communication skills, resilience, stress coping strategy, and clinical competence were significantly better in the experimental group compared to the control group. According to the qualitative results, the nursing students experienced improvement in emotional intelligence, interpersonal relationships, and empowerment, as well as a reduction in clinical practice stress after participation in the emotional intelligence program. Conclusion: Study findings indicate that the emotional intelligence program for undergraduate nursing students is effective and can be recommended as an intervention for improving the clinical competence of undergraduate students in a nursing curriculum.
The purpose of this study was to analyze consumers' expectation. perception and satisfaction. The subjects in this study were 200 employees who were employed in a department store. They experienced nursing services from the primary care center at the department store. The results were as follows: 1. The rank of perceived significance of nursing services is tangibility, reliability, assurance, responsiveness. and empathy, respectively. 2. The rank of perceived service quality is empathy. responsiveness. assurance. reliability. and tangibility. 3. The rank of expectation and the rank of perception about nursing services are same. They are assurance, reliability, responsiveness, tangibility, and empathy respectively. 4. The regression analysis, which related the effect of perceived service quality to consumers satisfaction, had R2 value of 22.9%. From the above results, it can be concluded that the higher consumers' satisfaction can be explained by the greater perceived service quality.
