  • Unconsolidated and permeable alluvial deposit composed of sand and gravel is distributed along the fluvial plain at the Iryong study area. Previous studies on the area show that a single alluvial well can produce at least 1,650m3d-1 of bank infilterated shallow groundwater(BIGW) from the deposit. This study is aimed to evaluate and simulate the influence that seasonal variation of water levels and temperatures of the river have an effect on those of BIGW under the pumping condition and also to compare seasonal variation of COPs when indirectly pumped BIGW or directly pumped surface water are used for a water to water heat pump system as an heat source and sink using 3 D flow and heat transport model of Feflow. The result shows that the magnitude influenced to water level of BIGW by fluctuation of river water level in summer and winter is about 48% and 75% of Nakdong river water level separately. Seasonal change of river water temperature is about $23.7^{\circ}C$, on other hand that of BIGW is only $3.8^{\circ}C$. The seasonal temperatures of BIGW are ranged from minimum $14.5^{\circ}C$ in cold winter(January) and maximum $18.3^{\circ}C$ in hot summer(July). It stands for that BIGW is a good source of heat energy for heating and cooling system owing to maintaining quite similar temperature($16^{\circ}C$) of background shallow groundwater. Average COPh in winter time and COPc in summer time of BIGW and surface water are estimated about 3.95, 3.5, and about 6.16 and 4.81 respectively. It clearly indicates that coefficient of performance of heat pump system using BIGW are higher than 12.9% in winter time and 28.1% in summer time in comparision with those of surface water.

  • Commercial buildings are generally cooling-dominated and therefore reject more heat to a vertical ground heat exchanger(GHE) than they extract over the annual cycle. Shallow ponds can provide a cost-effective means to balance the thermal loads to the ground and to reduce the length of GHE. The objective of this work has been to develop a design tool for surface water heat exchanger(SWHE) submerged in shallow pond. This paper presents the analysis results of the impact of design parameters on the length of SWHE and its application effect on geothermal heat pump(GHP) system using vertical GHE. In order to analysis, We applied ${\epsilon}-NTU$ method on designing the length of SWHE. Analysis results show that the required pipe length of SWHE was decreased with the increase of approach temperature difference and with the decrease of pipe wall thickness. In addition, when the SWHE was applied to the GHP system, the temperature of vertical GHE was more stable than that of standalone GHE system.

  • Objective of this study was to examine the effects of grouts and temperature change on microorganisms in geothermal heat pump. Groundwater samples were obtained from wells in the heat pump system during installation (Oriental medicine hospital) and in the heat pump system under operation (Business incubation center). Grouts are the volclay sodium bentonite. Real-time PCR was used to evaluate total bacterial number and 16S rDNA. The results showed that total bacterial number of groundwater in the heat pump operation was greater than that of non-operation case, which indicates a temperature effect on the bacterial culture. In addition, high concentration of grout showed an elevated bacteria number. In the mean time, a long-term field monitoring is essentially required to confirm the effects of the grouts and the temperature changes.

  • One major breakthrough in the field of heating, ventilation and air conditioning has been the development of heat pumps. Heat pump systems offer economic alternatives for recovering heat from different sources for use in various industrial, commercial and residential applications. In recent years, the heat pump has been tipped to have a very good potential for hot water production. This paper investigated the performance of a vapor injection heat pump with the variation of sub-cooler capacity at heating mode. The heating capacity of the vapor injection heat pump slightly increased with an increment of sub-cooler capacity, while COP didn't increase continuously. The 20% capacity of sub-cooler comparing with system capacity could be used as a standard to select sub-cooler capacity.

  • Ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) systems have become an efficient alternative to conventional cooling and heating methods due to their higher energy using efficiency. Although some experimental and simulation works related to performance analysis of GCHP systems for commercial buildings have been done, relatively little has been reported on the performance evaluation of GCHP systems for school buildings. The purpose of this simulation study is to evaluate the performance of a hypothetical GCHP system for a school building in Seoul. We collected various data of building specifications and construction materials for the building and then modeled to calculate hourly building loads with SketchuUp and TRNSYS V17. In addition, we used GLD (Ground Loop Design) V2016, a GCHP system design and simulation software, to design the GCHP system for the building and to simulate temperature of circulating water in ground heat exchanger. The variation of entering source temperature (EST) into the system was calculated with different prediction time and then each result was compared. For 20 years of prediction time, EST for baseline design (Case A) based on the hourly simulation results were outranged from the design criteria.

  • A steady-state simulation model for Dual-Source Heat Pump(DSHP) of 8RT was presented. A Dual-Source Heat Pump(DSHP) has been designed to make up for the conventional air source heat pumps. The performance evaluation has been conducted under internal standard test conditions such as ISO-13256-1 and KS C 9306. However, as test conditions such as entering water, indoor and outdoor air conditions could not be controlled to satisfy the standard test conditions in outdoor tests, a series of experiments have been conducted with the actual test conditions. Then, computer models for DSHP could be used for the standard condition have developed using EES program. The model was developed from basic thermodynamic principles and heat transfer relations. Most of the parameters were obtained with EES from the actual catalog data. The simulation results were in good agreement with the experiments.

  • Recently, It has increased the importance of building energy saving. Pipe insulation as well as building envelope insulation is to improve energy efficiency and reduce the energy loss. However, there continues to use the old standard for pipe insulation that is one of the most important elements in energy savings in buildings. The purpose of this study is to propose suitable pipe insulation thickness for reducing building energy use. The study also reviews pipe insulation thickness standard in accordance to Korea standard, ASHRAE 90.1 and BS5422 and analyzed through thermal simulation. As a result, it is necessary to apply the performance design method of the pipe insulation thickness to reduce the energy loss of the piping.

  • A boiling heat transfer is used in various industry such as power generation systems, heat exchangers, air-conditioning and refrigerations. In the boiling heat transfer system, the critical heat flux (CHF) is the important factor, and it indicated safety of the system. It has kept up studies on the CHF enhancement. Recently, it is reported the CHF enhancement, when working fluid used the nanofluid with excellent thermal properties. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the influence of nano particles coated surface for heat transfer enhancement in pure water, oxidized multi-wall carbon nanotube nanofluid (OMWCNT), and oxidized graphene nanofluid (OGraphene). Nanoparticles were coated for 120 sec on the surface, and we measured the CHF at the flow velocities of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 m/sec, respectively. As the results, both of the OMWCNT and OGraphene nanofluids increased up to about 34.0 and 40.0%.

  • Recently, utilization of building foundations as ground-coupled heat exchangers has attracted much attention because they reduce the cost and enhance the heat transfer. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of energy-slab ground-coupled heat exchanger installed in a commercial building. In order to demonstrate the energy transfer characteristics of the energy-slab, experiments were conducted from October 2010 to September 2011. The 1-year measurement results showed that the mean EWTs of brine returning from the energy-slab were $9.6^{\circ}C$ in heating season and $24.9^{\circ}C$ in cooling season, which were in a range of design target temperatures. In addition, the geothermal heat pump system with the energy-slab showed on-off operation according to the setting temperatures of secondary fluid in water storage tank. The results also showed that the energy-slab extracted heat of 198.6 kW from the ground and injected heat of 318.9 kW to the ground, respectively.
