  • Many studies have been made on investigation, design, explanation and treatments etc. to minimize slope failure. However, the problem is that failures of cutting slope and natural slope due to Typhoon and localized heavy rainfall are still not reduced. It is difficult to treat the problem by only strengthening the design standard. And it is very necessary to carry out design and safety analysis under the most suitable conditions considering foundation and rainfall characteristics. In this study, variations of safety factor were discussed from different aspects to investigate the influence of different parameters of rainfall and analysis conditions. Rainfall and foundation conditions are supposed to be the most sensitive parameters to slope stability, and numerical analysis were performed by changing parameters of the two conditions. Rainfall behavior is based on the domestic statistical rainfall and foundation condition is selected as unsaturated soils. Study results show that, application of rainfall characteristics in different area and parameters of unsaturated soils are responding sensitively to variations of slope safety. Therefore, the input parameters should be fully examined when performing the practical design.

  • The measured ground water behavior by TDR (time domain reflectometer) sensors were analyzed by the data filtering technique such as moving average method and Fourier transform, and the ground water level and unsaturated zone were tried to be determined numerically. At first, the variation of TDR data according to the saturation degree was measured by lab test, which is translated as a function of saturation degree. Then, changes of ground water level and lateral seepage in field conditions were simulated using acrylic pipe, and the measured data were analyzed to make calibration curve. Furthermore, TDR sensors were installed into the in-situ embankment to insure the field application. The saturation degree, unsaturated and dried zones were determined from the measured data.

  • This paper describes a simplified design method of stabilizing piles based on an experimental tests and an analytical study which can take into account the safety factor of slope and pile spacing. The nonlinear characteristics of the soil-pile interaction for stabilizing piles are modeled by using load transfer method. The interaction factors due to pile spacing and cap rigidity were estimated by using a three dimensional nonlinear finite element approach and laboratory tests. Based on the results obtained, the interaction factors are proposed quantitatively for one-row pile groups with spacing-to-diameter ratios varying far 2.5 to 7.0. The Bishop's simplified method of slope stability analysis is extended to incorporate the soil-pile interaction and determine the safety factor of the reinforced slope. Through the comparative study, it is found that the prediction by present approach is in relatively good agreement with the results of centrifuge tests and field tests and three dimensional finite element analyses.

  • In this study the pilot test of CGS as injection method by low slump mortar was performed and the results were analyzed in order to find out the application of this method and effect of settlement restraint. The site far pilot test is adjacent to apartments supported by pile foundations. Sand drain method was performed previously as countermeasures against settlement, but settlement occur continuously because this ground is very soft. Site investigations such as SPT, DCPT and vane shear test were performed to determine the characteristics of ground improvement. Field measurements and FDM analysis were performed on purpose to find out the displacement of ground during injection works. From the results of this study, CGS method can be optimized by the control of diagram, space, depth, injection material, and injection pressure. CGS improved soft ground compositely by the bearing effect of CGS columns and reinforcement of adjacent ground. Considering that increase of N value is about 2.1, CGS can be considered as an effective method to increase the bearing capacity as well as to stop the settlement of soft ground. It is also expected to be economic and effective in improvement of ground when it is used in applicable sites.

  • Phosphogypsum is a by-product from the phosphoric acid process for manufacturing fertilizers. It consists mainly of $(CaSO_4.2H_2O)$ and contains some impurities such as$(P_2O_5)$, 불소$(F_-)$, and organic substances. The annual world production of this material is up to 150 million tons and is up to 1.57 million tons in Korea. Therefore studies describe application of phosphogypsum to daily and middle cover materials in landfill. For this Purpose, experiments were performed to evaluate the engineering properties of the material by sieve analysis, specific gravity, consistency of soil, compaction, CBR, permeability, mi environmental characteristics of leaching test, reactor test. The results of this study are as follows : The mixing and layer conditions of CBR value are 6.2~6.3%, coefficient of permeability is $\alpha$$\times10_{-5}~10_{-6}cm/sec$. And leaching test results are far below than those of regulatory requirement of Waste Management Act, Soil Environment Preservation Act in Korea and RCRA in USA. Therefore phosphogypsum can be used as daily and intermediate cover materials in landfill.

  • Ocassionally it is used for simple extensions of Terzahgi's theory to account for time-depend- tint loading but there is little evidence of application in more complicated consolidation theories that take into account such effects as nonlinear stress.strain, layered systems or large strains. The purpose of this paper provides an efficient computer algorthm based on numerical analysis using finite difference method which account for multi-layered soils to determine the degree of consolidation and excess pore pressures relative to time and positions more realistically. The explicitly scheme of solving the consolidation equations has been investigated from the point of view of the stability conditions and the convergence with variance of the operator as well as to obtain an optimal divided depth ratios of total depth. A comparison of the settlement predictions with both the classical analysis and the algorithm based on numerical analysis indicates that the new algorithm scheme is found to be superior to the classical theory in the layered soils.

  • Recent increase of large scale construction near costal area has also increased the application of soft ground treatment. As a result, solidification with cement and lime which increases stability and durability of soils, is frequently used for surface layer stabilization in soft ground site. While stabilization of very soft clay with high plasticity and compressibility has widely been studied, studies on silty clay with low plasticity and compressibility are relatively rare. In this study, after stabilizing low plasticity silty clay of Songdo area with cement and lime under various water contents, mixing ratio, and curing time, uniaxial compression test and plate load test were performed. Strength properties from both tests were considerably consistent. And trackability of construction equipment on the treated surface layer of dredged land was estimated. Finally, optimum mixing condition for Songdo silty clay was proposed.

  • In engineering practices, the superstructure was analyzed under a fixed boundary condition and the foundation was designed by considering the loading condition of superstructure. It may result in overestimation of forces, the bending moment, settlement of superstructure and foundation. In this study, an interactive analytical method is proposed for the interaction between the superstructure and the piled raft. The overall objective of this study is focused on the application of interactive analysis method for predicting behavior of entire structures. And a series of numerical analyses are performed to verify the interactive analysis routine in comparison to the unified analysis method. Through the comparative studies, it is found that the iterative and interactive analysis gave similar results of settlement and raft bending moment compared with those of finite element analysis. And it is also found that the proposed design method considering interaction between superstructure and foundation is capable of predicting reasonably well the behavior of entire structures. It can be effectively used to the design of a superstructure-piled raft foundation system.

  • The objective of this study is to demonstrate the suitability of electromagnetic waves for evaluating necking defects in bored piles using electromagnetic waves. Experiments are conducted with small-scaled defective model pile with diameter of 150 mm and length of 270 mm. Two necking defects are generated at the upper and lower positions on two different sides of the model pile, respectively. The other two necking defects are generated at the upper and lower positions on the same side of the model pile. Electrical wires are installed alongside the stainless steel wire of a steel cage to configure a two-conductor transmission line. A time-domain reflectometer is used to generate and defect electromagnetic waves. The experimental results show that electromagnetic waves are reflected at the necking defects and the end of the model pile. In addition, calculated defect locations are almost the same as actual defect locations. This study demonstrates that electromagnetic waves can be effective tool for evaluating necking defects in bored piles.

  • Since the introduction of 'the rule for computerizing subsoil investigation results and its application' in 2007, the DB construction of the national geotechnical information by Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (MOLTMA) has been performed. According to the Integrated DB Center of National Geotechnical Information, there have been 180 thousands borehole information stored in the system. In this study, the time-series analyses of precision on the most used information, the depth of stratum and ground water level, were performed to evaluate the effect of the initiation of the rule established in 2007. The precisions were evaluated based on the statistical analyses using kurtosis and normal distribution. Based on the results, the increase of precision after 2007 and the affirmative effects of the rule established in 2007 are confirmed. Furthermore, the precision of the regional information can be achieved with the precision analyses on the information from various areas.
