  • A reliability analysis of the gravity-based foundation of anoffshore wind turbine was performed by considering the uncertainties of the design variables, including environmental loads. The limit state functions of the gravity-based foundation were defined using the response limits of the support structures suggested in the DNV standard. The wind load couldbe obtained using the GH_bladed software, and the wave load was calculated using the Morison equation. Then, the extreme distributions of the wind and wave loads were estimated by applying the peak over threshold (POT) method to the wind and wave load data. The probability distribution characteristics of the soil properties were defined with reference to a southwest coast geotechnical survey report. The reliability index was evaluated for each failure mode using a first-order reliability method.

  • The Design criteria are different from one another due to the different engineering properties of rock in the every nation. Most of the test results of the rock-socketed piers were loaded two times of the design load capacities because they would be used in the foundation of the bridge or the building. So we have much difficulties in study of the load capacities of the rock-socketed piers by the test result in Korea. When we design the rock-socket piers, every designer uses the different formula, and makes different results. Recently the demand of the large bridges and the huge buildings has been increased. The adequate design criterion of the rock-socketed pier is urgently needed to design them reasonable. In this paper we analyzed the various design criteria and proposed the adequate design criterion which is based on the test results of the rock-socked piers in Korea.

  • The present paper illustrates the outcome of the monitoring of the consolidation behavior of a soft foundation soil under a large submerged sand embankment. Measurements of settlements and excess pore water pressures showed a good agreement with predictions evaluated using the large strain consolidation theory. Soft soil improvement by means of deep mixing has been optimized. Moreover, the principles and developments of underwater geosynthetics applications are discussed.

  • Recently, construction activities in reclaimed onshore areas increase in our country In this case, the stability evaluation of the piles for negative skin friction is an important factor for the design of pile foundation in soft grounds. Nevertheless, the design of piles for negative skin friction (or downdrag forces) is probably poorly understood by many geotechnical engineers. It is mainly because only the bearing capacity aspect is taken into account for the downdrag evaluation of piles in most of design specifications. However, the problems fur negative skin friction of piles are mostly related with settlement rather than bearing capacity Meanwhile, LRFD (Load Resistance Factor Design) approach considers both ultimate limit state in terms of bearing capacity and serviceability limit state in terms of settlements. This paper proposes LRFD approach for the downdrag evaluation of piles and compares this approach to traditional design approach. And also a case history is analyzed. Through the analysis some suggestions to solve the problems for the design of piles for negative skin friction are suggested.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop a rational reliability analysis procedure for the LRFD design provisions of bridge substructures. A bridge abutments is considered in this study. The reliability analysis is applied to determine the relationship between the major design parameters for bridge abutment and reliability index. The considered load components include dead load, vertical and horizontal earth pressure, earth surcharge, and vehicle live load. Several limit states are considered: foundation bearing capacity, sliding, and overturning. The analysis results show that the most important parameter in the reliability analysis is the effective stress friction angle of the soil. The reliability indices are calculated using Monte Carlo simulations for a selected bridge abutment. The results of the sensitivity analysis indicate that reliability index is most sensitive with regard to resistance factor and horizontal earth pressure factor.

  • The design of a deep foundation by means of whatever a scientific method has to take into account the influence of the installation of the piles on the soil parameters to be implemented in the shaft and base capacity. Especially when discussing screw piles, the details of the pile installation technique are of outmost importance. New developments in screw pile techniques, over the last decade, show this type of deep foundations to be probably one of the most promissing for the future.

  • This paper describes a new optimum design approach for piled raft foundations using the genetic algorithm. The objective function considered is the cost-based total weight of raft and piles. The genetic algorithm is a search or optimization technique based on nature selection. Successive generation evolves more fit individuals on the basis of the Darwinism survival of the fittest. In formulating the genetic algorithm-based optimum design procedure, the analysis of piled raft foundations is peformed based on the 'hybrid'approach developed by Clancy(1993), and also the simple genetic algorithm proposed by the Goldberg(1989) is used. To evaluate a validity of the optimum design procedure proposed based on the genetic algorithm, comparisons regarding optimal pile placement for minimizing differential settlements by Kim et at.(1999) are made. In addition using proposed design procedure, design examples are presented.

  • Laboratory experiments are performed for staple fibre -nonwoven geotextiles which have been widely used in Korea to investigate the filter characteristics of soil/geoteztile system under alternating flow conditions. It is experimentally examined the effects of various design factors such as alternating hydraulic gradient, alternating period, vertical load, gradation and density of foundation soil on the filter structure, vertical permeability and soil retention of soil/geoteztile systems. Based on the experimental results, alternating flow filtration criteria- retention criteria and permeability criteria-for staple fibre-nonwoven geotextiles made in Korea are suggested.

  • Geosynthetic tubes inflated with water, clay slurry or sand have been widely used for large dike construction in land reclamation projects. In this paper, analytical solutions for geosynthetic tube resting on rigid foundation is presented by adopting an approach similar to that presented by Leshchinsky et al. (1996). The proposed method allows a quick preliminary design to be made for using a closed-form solution. To simplify the analysis, relationships between geometrical parameters and pumping pressure are established using numerical method. The analytical solutions were compared with several existing solutions and good agreements were achieved.

  • The spot where bottom foundation of a marine bridge is constructed is deep in depth of water and a bedrock, bearing stratum, is very deeply distributed. So, I analyzed material of soil profile and then evaluate bearing capacity and safety of settlement when a stake of site construction is designed using a projection cast in place concrete pile and a sacrifice steel cast in place pile. Also, I analyzed and researched pratical affairs like a slime processing and plumbing maintenance in supervision of execution.
