Large-scale direct shear tests were conducted in order to investigate both the shear strength of soil itself and the friction behavior at the interface of soil/geosynthetics in respect of efficiency in this study. Sand, crushed stone and three types of geotextile (i.e. one woven geotextile and two nonwoven geotextiles) were used in the experimental program. The considered interfaces for the evaluation of interface shear strength in this study included sand/sand, crushed stone/crushed stone, sand/woven geotextile, crushed stone/woven geotextile, crushed stone/nonwoven geotextile-A and crushed stone/nonwoven geotextile-B. The results showed that the efficiency of 84% was obtained at the interface of sand/woven geotextile compared with the shear strength of sand itself (i.e. sand/sand interface). The efficiencies of 74%, 83% and 72% were obtained at the interface of crushed stone/nonwoven geotextile-A, crushed stone/nonwoven geotextile-B and crushed stone/woven geotextile, respectively compared with the shear strength of crushed stone itself (i.e. crushed stone/crushed stone interface).
Geosynthetics reinforced soil (GRS) walls with a flexible wall face allow deformation. GRS walls constructed on the weak ground change in both horizontal earth pressures on wall faces and the tensile stress of geosynthetics, affecting the backfill in time until the deformation of the backfill and the foundation is completed. However, there are few studies that were done to measure and analyze the horizontal earth pressures and geosynthetics deformation on GRS walls constructed on the soft ground for a long period of time. Two field GRS walls in this study are constructed on a shallow layer of a weak foundation to measure and analyze geostynthetics deformation, horizontal earth pressures, and pore water pressures for the duration of approximately 16 months. Strain gauges are used to measure geosynthetics deformation; this study specifically suggests a new method of measuring nonwoven geotextile using strain gauges. Most geosynthetics deformation occurred within a month after the construction of GRS walls. The maximum deformation measured for approximately 16 months appeared as follows: nowoven geotextile: 6.05%, woven geotextile: 2.92%, and geogrid: 2.33%. Pore water pressures on the GRS wall can be ignored; however, horizontal earth pressures on the bottom and the upper part of the wall face appear larger than earth pressures at rest.
Stone column is one of the ground improvement systems which is being used for accelerating consolidation and increasing bearing capacity for settlement sensitive structures like load embankments, bridge abutments, oil storage tanks etc. The effects of this method are enhancement of ground bearing capacity, reduction of settlement, prevention of liquefaction and prevention of lateral ground movement. Recently, geosynthetic reinforced (encased) stone column approach has been developed to improve its load carrying capacity through increasing confinement effect. Although such a concept has successfully been applied in practice, fundamentals of the method have not been fully explored. This paper presents the results of an investigation on the bearing capacity and failure mechanism of geogrid-encased stone column by model tests. The results of the analyses indicated improved bearing capacity of the geogrid reinforced stone column method over the conventional strone column method with no encasing.
The stone column method is widely used in Europe as an alternative to conventional pile foundations. Several benefits of using the stone column method include sound performance, low cost, expediency of construction, and liquefaction resistance among others. Recently, geosynthetic-encased stone column approach has been developed to improve its load carrying capacity through increasing confinement effect. Although such a concept has been successfully applied in practice, fundamentals of the method have not been fully explored. This paper presents the results of an investigation on the load carrying capacity of geogrid-encased stone column using a series of 2D finite element analyses. A parametric study was then conducted for influencing factors such as effect of geogrid encasement, encasement length, geogrid strength, among others. The results of the analyses indicated improved short- and long-term load carrying capacity of the geogrid-encased stone column method has advantages over the conventional stone column method without encasing.
Geobag method is an eco-friendly method to minimize the impact on the environment in the construction of retaining wall structure as a kind of geosynthetic reinforced retaining walls. In this study, evaluated behavior of full scaled geobag retaining wall about four different types of geobag retaining walls, that is, non-compacted geobags wall, compacted geobag wall, combination of longitudinal and transversal laied geobags wall, gabion and geobag wall were constructed in the field with instrumentation. Based on the results of field measurement, transversal layered geobag wall for non-compacted case was displaced 30% more than that of mixed gabion wall. Also, the more than 2m geobag walls without reinforcement at the backfill area are turned out to be unstable in terms of wall displacement. On the one hand, the distribution of the earth pressure for all geobag retaining walls sites show within the range of Rankine's and Coulomb's earth pressure after construction. But after intensity rainfall, the transversal laied geobag walls significantly increment of soil pressure. The geobag walls which constructed in the way of mixed wall systems such as gabion and geobag, longitudinal and transversal laied geobags are much stable with comparison of transversal laied geobag wall.
The factors affecting the long-term design strength of geogrid can be classified into factors on creep deformation, installation damage, temperature, chemical degradation and biological degradation. Especially, creep deformation and installation damage are considered as main factors to determine the long-term design strength of geogrid. Current practice in the design of a reinforced soil structures is to calculate the long-term design strength of a geosynthetic reinforcement damaged during installation by multiplying the two partial safety factors, $RF_{ID}$ and $RF_{CR}$. This method assumes that there is no evaluation of synergy effect between installation damage and creep deformation of geogrids. This paper describes the results of a series of experimental study, which are carried out to assess the combined effect of the installation damage and the creep deformation for the long-term design strength of geogrid reinforcements. A series of field tests was carried out to assess installation damage of various geogrids with respect to different fill materials, and then creep tests are conducted to evaluate the creep deformation of both undamaged and damaged geogrids. The results indicated that the tensile strength reduction factors, RF, considering the combined effect between the installation damage and the creep deformation is less than that calculated by the current design method.

This study evaluated the construction costs of 11 design cases to decrease the horizontal forces applied to an abutment. They include two kinds of abutment types, which are used to improve the backfill materials for reversed T-shaped abutment and geosynthehtic reinforced abutment for railways (RAR). In the first economic analysis, the internal friction angles of the backfill materials were increased from ${\Phi}=35^{\circ}$ to ${\Phi}=40^{\circ}$ and $50^{\circ}$ for a reversed T-shaped abutment. The second analysis examined cases with the design of a geosynthehtic RAR. When the friction angles were $40^{\circ}$ or $50^{\circ}$ after improvement of the backfill material, the reduction in the construction cost of the abutment was not as large (2.0-3.9%), even though the horizontal forces on the abutment were decreased by 18-48%. However, in the case of applying the RAR, a maximum cost reduction of 30% was achieved by decreasing the horizontal force to zero. The cost reduction results from the decreased wall thickness, base slab size, and the number of pile foundations for the abutment, as well as changing the material.
This study is to find out the characteristics of the behavior of Geosyntehtic Reinforced Retaining Earth Wall(GRREW) through the laboratory experiment with the reduced-scale model, and to verify the effect of reinforcement by materials of GRREW. The loading tests after combining nonwoven geosynthetic, re-bar mesh nets and drainage blocks respectively among the components of the GRREW were performed in three cases of their slopes. In the cases of the behavior analysis including all of the components of the GRREW, the maximum horizontal displacement was generated 8.4mm at the location of 0.57H in the slope of 1:0.3; 3.8mm at the location of 0.57H in the slope of 1:0.6; 3.6mm at the location of 0.86H in the slope of 1:1.0. On average, the horizontal displacements of the GRREW were reduced by 83.8% against those of the original slopes. Lastly, seepage analysis and slope stability analysis were performed by modelling section of field, to confirm the effect of installation of drainage block in GRREW. We can confirm to compare increasing the slope safe factor and decreasing ground water in accordance with drainage blocks.
Recently, the effective use of closed waste landfill nearby urban areas has been demanded, because of the lack of the usable land. However, the reuse of closed landfill is needed an adequate stabilization of liner system. But most of these places are consisted of steep slope and hence it is necessary to use the geosynthetics liners in there. Liner system of waste landfills is an important facility which prevents leachate outgoing from the landfills and also groundwater infiltrating from surroundings into the landfills. During the waste disposal stage, differential settlement and tensile stress of the geosynthetic materials could occur due to impact load of trucks and dozers, waste loads and weak foundation soils. In this study, the tensile strength and tracer test were performed to evaluate the stability of geomembrane liner systems. Based on the tensile strength test result of in-situ geomembrane sample, the yield tensile strength maintain the suitable strength by specification and current law. However, according to the tracer test, the damage of geomembrane liner was detected on sanitary landfill section.
Geotextile tubes hydraulically or mechanically filled with dredged materials have been applied in hydraulic and coastal engineering in recent years(detached breakwater, groins and jetty). The geotextile tubes are made of sewn geosynthetics sheets. If the sandy soil is use to fill material, these inlets should be spaced closely to assure uniform filling of the tubes because sandy soil and geosynthetic is very pervious. However, the clayey soil or contaminated slurry is used, the inlets can be located relatively long distance. The fine clayey particles tend to rapidly blind the fabric slowing down water escape through the geotextile. This paper presents a field test result of a geotextile tube in the land reclamation project for the Songdo New City construction site. The dredged silty clay was dredged by the dredging ship and hydraulically pumped into the geotextile tube. The height of geotextile tube was measured at every filling stage and also measured width and diameter of geotextile tube with the elapsed time. Based on the test results, if the clayey filling material is used, the pumping step must be divided 3~4 stages for drainage and sediment. After complete drainage, the height of the geotextile tube reduces by approximately 50%.
