  • Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite (COMS) for the hybrid mission of meteorological observation, ocean monitoring, and telecommunication service is planned to be launched onto Geostationary Earth Orbit in 2008. The meteorological payload of COMS is an imager which will monitor meteorological phenomenon around the Korean peninsular intensively and of Asian-side full Earth disk periodically. The meteorological imager (MI) of COMS has 5 spectral channels, I visible channel with the resolution of I km at nadir and 4 infrared channels with the resolution of 4 km at nadir. The characteristics of the COMS MI are introduced in the view points of user requirements, hardware characteristics, and operation features.

  • COMS (Communication Ocean and Meteorological Satellite), the Korea's first geostationary Earth observation satellite, started to operate 24 hours to observe Land/Ocean/Atmosphere with the MI (Meteorological Imager) and GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager). After the successful completion of the IOT (In-Orbit Test), the satellite is in normal operation from April of 2011. This paper describes an algorithm for scan mirror emissivity compensation of the COMS MI and its software implementation.

  • In this paper, propagation characteristics are analyzed under the Korean propagation condition based on the measurements for Ka-band beacon signal of COMET satellite which moves in non-geostationary orbit. Radio propagation characteristics varying as time, range, and elevation angle are presented also. As results, it is concluded that free space loss is a major parameter to the radio propagation characteristics varying as a range in clear sky. In addition, the effect of elevation angle is negligible because COMETS is observed above 40 degree.

  • Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI), the World's first spaceborne ocean color observation satellite operated in geostationary orbit, was successfully launched on May 2010. The main missions of GOCI is the coastal environment monitoring of GOCI in order to meet the necessity of long-term climate change monitoring and research. The GOCI have higher spatial resolution than MODIS, $500m{\times}500m$, and 8 spectral ocean color channels. GOCI have a capability for observation on the coastal environment change, GOCI perform the observation with 8 times a day. In this paper, we presented the more improved results for observation on the coastal environment change than MODIS ocean color sensor and detected the spatial difference of CDOM for monitoring coastal environment change.

  • In this paper, we analyze the interference effects between NGSO(Non-Geostationary Orbit) and HAPS(High Altitude Platform System) by dividing into two cases. The one is interference effects of HAPS into NGSO, the another is the interference effects of NGSO into HAPS. At the result, we canknow the interference effect into NGSO mobile station is the highest when position of NGSO is $95^{\circ}$. In this case, we can also know the interference effects from both HAPS and NGSO exceed interference criteria when the number of users are more than 20. And, in the case of the interference effect into HAPS mobile station, we can know it is the highest when elevation angle of NGSO is $87^{\circ}$, and the interference effects from both NGSO and HAPS exceed interference criteria when the number of users is more then 10. Moreover, the interference effect is the minimum, when elevation angle of NGSO is $64^{\circ}$, at this time, in case that the number of users of NGSO equal to the number of user of HAPS, the interference effects exceed interference criteria when the number of users is 190.

  • A communications satellite system placed in three-Lagrange points, $L_3$, $L_4$ and $L_5$, of the restricted three-body problem in Earth-Moon system is proposed in this paper. LEO satellite constellation has been another choice of communications system. The proposed system which is alternatives of limited geostationary orbit resources, has some weak points such as long distance from the Earth, relatively expensive launch cost, long delay time, more required power, and so on. It has good points like less efforts (fuel) for station keeping, less eclipses, etc. This system has limitations for applications to provide commercial services but it is still some attractive points.

  • The mean orbital elements for geosynchronou8s satellite are developed in terms of non-singular orbital elements. The true satellite position oscillates about the position calculated from the mean elements due to short period perturbations to the satellite motion. The displacement of a geostationary satellite from this mean orbit position is less than 1800m. The mean elements of ec are obtained.

  • An optical tracking system has advantages for observing geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellites relatively over other types of observation system. Regular surveying for unidentified space objects with the optical tracking system can be an early warning tool for the safety of five Korean active GEO satellites. Two strategies of positioning on the observed image of Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite 1 are tested and compared. Photometric method has a half root mean square error against streak method. Also eccentricity method for initial orbit determination (IOD) is tested with simulation data and real observation data. Under 10 minutes observation time interval, eccentricity method shows relatively better IOD results than the other time interval. For follow-up observation of unidentified space objects, at least two consecutive observations are needed in 5 minutes to determine orbit for geosynchronous orbit space objects.

  • Antenna Tracking System has been required core technology with special tracking algorithm, and it can be achieved by program tracking, step tracking, optracking, and monopulse tracking as well. Depend on tracking requirement we might be able to apply eligible tracking method in accordance with Geostationary and Inclined Orbit Satellite. Further, we should deeply consider two important factors in order to act up to customer expectation in quality and system performance including competitive price therefore we need maximized endeavor to upgrade not only tracking system performance, but reduction of product through engineering skill and R&D investment.

  • Environment and climate changes affect all aspects of our society. The enhanced remote sensing technology made the satellite to be widely used in the environment monitoring applications. Geostationary environmental monitoring is also actively researched due to the increased needs for the monitoring of diurnal environmental changes, troposhperic pollution and its origin. In this paper, recent development trends of geostationary environment monitoring payloads are introduced. GEO-CAFE and GIFTS missions are researched by the leading of the NASA and Sentinel-4 by the ESA. Those missions are in the state of detailed conceptual design and hardware development preparing with the launch plan in the late 2010s. By considering these development trends, domestic environment monitoring payloads shall be developed with careful analysis on the mission and data application.
