A technique for the simulation of various kinds of ground based SAR system was developed. This is an ancillary research for the development of an ArcSAR system which uses an arc-rail as a platform for the antenna movement instead of linear rail. The results of applying conventional Deramp FFT based SAR focusing algorithm to the simulated raw signal of linear rail type ground based SAR for the point targets showed that the developed simulation technique generated accurate GB-SAR raw signal. The developed technique is now being used for the development and verification of SAR focusing algorithm for the arc-rail type ground based SAR. The simulation technique is also expected to be very useful for the purpose oriented system design and operation planning of ground based SAR technique.
It is possible to extract qualified ground control points (GCPs) from SAR data itself without published maps. TerraSAR-X data that are one of highest spatial resolution among civilian SAR systems is now available. In this study, a sophisticated method for GCP extraction from TerraSAR-X data was tested and the quality of the extracted GCPs was evaluated. Mean values of the distance errors were 0.11m and -3.96 m with standard deviations of 6.52 m and 5.11 m in easting and northing, respectively. The result is one of the best among GCPs possibly extracted from any civilian remote sensing systems. The extracted GCPs were used for geo-rectification of IKONOS image. The method used in this study can be applied to KOMPSAT-5 for geo-rectification of high-resolution optic images acquired by KOMPSAT-2 or follow-up missions.
In this paper we introduced GB-SAR focusing algorithms for image formation and suggested an optimized solution. We compared the characteristics, advantages, and limitations of the Deramp-FFT (DF) algorithm and the Range-Doppler (RD) algorithm in terms of their image formation principles, memory usage and processing time. We found that DF algorithm is efficient in memory and processing time but can not focus the near range. The RD algorithm can focus the entire range but, considering the refinement on the rail length, it has much redundancy in memory and processing time. In conclusion, we optimized the GB-SAR focusing by using the DF algorithm for a far-range case and the RD algorithm for a near-range case separately.
I have developed a processor for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) raw data compression using range-doppler algorithm for educational purpose. The program realized a generic SAR focusing algorithm so that it can deal with any SAR system if the specification is known. It can run efficiently on a low-cost computer by selecting minimum size out of a whole dataset, and can produce intermediate images during the process. Especially, the program is designed for educational purpose in such a way that Doppler centroid and azimuth ambiguity can be determined graphically by the user. By distributing the source code and the algorithm to public, I intend to maximize the educational effect on understanding and utilizing SAR data. This paper introduces the principle of SAR focusing algorithm embedded on the eSAR processor and shows an example of data processing using ERS-1 raw data.
In spatial information processing, particularly in non-renewable resource exploration, the spatial data sets, including remote sensing, geophysical and geochemical data, have to be geocoded onto a reference map and integrated for the final analysis and interpretation. Application of a computer based GIS(Geographical Information System of Geological Information System) at some point of the spatial data integration/fusion processing is now a logical and essential step. It should, however, be pointed out that the basic concepts of the GIS based spatial data fusion were developed with insufficient mathematical understanding of spatial characteristics or quantitative modeling framwork of the data. Furthermore many remote sensing and geological data sets, available for many exploration projects, are spatially incomplete in coverage and interduce spatially uneven information distribution. In addition, spectral information of many spatial data sets is often imprecise due to digital rescaling. Direct applications of GIS systems to spatial data fusion can therefore result in seriously erroneous final results. To resolve this problem, some of the important mathematical information representation techniques are briefly reviewed and discussed in this paper with condideration of spatial and spectral characteristics of the common remote sensing and exploration data. They include the basic probabilistic approach, the evidential belief function approach (Dempster-Shafer method) and the fuzzy logic approach. Even though the basic concepts of these three approaches are different, proper application of the techniques and careful interpretation of the final results are expected to yield acceptable conclusions in cach case. Actual tests with real data (Moon, 1990a; An etal., 1991, 1992, 1993) have shown that implementation and application of the methods discussed in this paper consistently provide more accurate final results than most direct applications of GIS techniques.
To improve the accuracy of land-cover discrimination in SAB data classification, this paper presents a methodology that includes feature extraction and fusion steps with multi-temporal SAR data. Three features including average backscattering coefficient, temporal variability and coherence are extracted from multi-temporal SAR data by considering the temporal behaviors of backscattering characteristics of SAR sensors. Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence(D-S theory) and fuzzy logic are applied to effectively integrate those features. Especially, a feature-driven heuristic approach to mass function assignment in D-S theory is applied and various fuzzy combination operators are tested in fuzzy logic fusion. As experimental results on a multi-temporal Radarsat-1 data set, the features considered in this paper could provide complementary information and thus effectively discriminated water, paddy and urban areas. However, it was difficult to discriminate forest and dry fields. From an information fusion methodological point of view, the D-S theory and fuzzy combination operators except the fuzzy Max and Algebraic Sum operators showed similar land-cover accuracy statistics.
The purpose of this paper is to establish the category of SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) systems, technologies and application fields, thus to provide the world-wide trend in SAR research and development activities by analysing SAR-related journal papers. This paper presents an analysis result of SAR-related journal papers published from the late 1960s to early 2005. Abstracts and indices of 2665 peer-reviewed, English journal papers published in 243 journals were collected from the Cambridge Scientific Abstracts and classified into the categories according to the system, technique, and application field. Statistics on each category were provided so that one can understand the historical and on-going development in SAR systems, techniques, and a variety of application fields such as land, ocean, cryosphere and atmosphere. This statistical analysis data would be a valuable guideline to establish a future SAR system application and satellite manoeuvering policy in Korea.
Reservoir geomechanics can play an important role in hydrocarbon recovery mechanism. In $CO_2$-EOR process, reservoir geomechanics analysis is concerned with the simultaneous study of fluid flow and the mechanical response of the reservoir under $CO_2$ injection. Accurate prediction of geomechanical effects during $CO_2$ injection will assist in modeling the Carbon dioxide recovery process and making a better design of process and production equipment. This paper deals with the implementation of a program (FORTRAN 90 interface code), which was developed to couple conventional reservoir (ECLIPSE) and geomechanical (ABAQUS) simulators, using a partial coupling algorithm. A geomechanics reservoir partially coupled approach is presented that allows to iteratively take the impact of geomechanics into account in the fluid flow calculations and therefore performs a better prediction of the process. The proposed approach is illustrated on a realistic field case. The reservoir geomechanics coupled models show that in the case of lower maximum bottom hole injection pressure, the cumulative oil production is more than other scenarios. Moreover at the high injection pressures, the production rates will not change with the injection bottom hole pressure variations. Also the FEM analysis of the reservoir showed that at $CO_2$ injection pressure of 11000 Psi the plastic strain has been occurred in the some parts of the reservoir and the related stress path show a critical behavior.

The Emilia, May-July 2012, earthquake has dramatically highlighted the only the hazards facing the people in insufficiently secured workplaces, but also the socio-economic consequences of interruption of production activities. After the event, in order to guarantee suitable safety levels, the Italian government asked for a generalized seismic retrofit of buildingsaffected by the earthquake under consideration. Considering that Emilia is one of the most industrialized Italian region, the number of the industrial buildings to be verified could however lead to not acceptable resumption of production time. So, with the aim to speed up the recovery, were leaved out from this request the buildings which had undergone a strong enoughshaking without any damage. In practice, the earthquakes were being used as a "test" to evaluate the seismic structural strength. Besides, the Italian government provision specifies also the zones, within which buildings that escaped evident damage are exempt from obligatory checks, and termed "exclusion zones", shall be individuated using the data provided by the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in the form of so-called "shakemaps". Obviously, the precision of such data greatly influences the determination of the exclusions zones and so all the economic issues related to them. Starting from these considerations, the present paper describes an evaluation of the reliability of the procedure of shakemap generation with specific regard to the seismic events that struck the Emilia region on May 20 and 29, 2012.
Comprehensive field surveys, including various hydrogeological and geophysical methods, were carried out to appraise the applicability of those methods to a leakage problem at the Sandong earth fill dam in southwestern Korea. The methods applied in the fold site were tracer tests, monitoring of drawdown and leakage with discharge of reservoir water, electrical resistivity surveys using the dipole-dipole array, self-potential (SP), and temperature logging methods. The leakage pattern in the reservoir wall was demonstrated by hydrogeological methods and was further clarified by the geophysical surveys. Leakage turned out to be through the right abutment of the reservoir wall. In this study, we conformed that the electrical resistivity method is effective in detecting the zones favorable to leakage, and SP methods are useful for delineating the leakage pathways themselves, because leaks generate strong streaming-potential anomalies.
