  • We developed a Impulse Response Measurement System, including hardware system and data analysis software, for non-destructive test of slab structure. And, we carried out impulse response measurements on the pavement to test performance of the system. In the field test, the developed system measured impulse response stably and showed parameters immediately. Test results showed that dynamic stiffness and average mobility varies significantly depending on the characteristics of the pavement materials. Some data showed anomalous values those reflect variations in pavement itself or subsurface ground. Developed system gives informations of conditions of slab structure easily and quickly. So, 2-D monitoring with the system will be helpful in maintaining various slab structures.

  • We calculated 3D frequency- and Laplace-domain wavefields using time-domain modeling and Fourier transform or Laplace transform. We adopted OpenACC and GPU for an efficient parallel calculation. The OpenACC makes it easy to use GPU accelerators by adding directives in conventional C, C++, and Fortran programming languages. Accordingly, one doesn't have to learn new GPGPU programming languages such as CUDA or OpenCL to use GPU. An OpenACC program allocates GPU memory, transfers data between the host CPU and GPU devices and performs GPU operations automatically or following user-defined directives. We compared performance of 3D wave propagation modeling programs using OpenACC and GPU to that using single-core CPU through numerical tests. Results using a homogeneous model and the SEG/EAGE salt model show that the OpenACC programs are approximately 53 and 30 times faster than those using single-core CPU.

  • Field data obtained from marine exploration are influenced by various environmental factors such as wind, waves, tidal current and flow velocity of a background medium. Most environmental factors except for the flow velocity are properly corrected in the data processing stage. In this study, the wave equation modeling considering flow velocity is used to generate observation data, and numerical experiments using the observation data were conducted to analyze the effect of flow velocity on waveform inversion. The numerical examples include the results with unrealistic flow velocities. In addition, an algorithm is suggested to numerically extract flow velocity for waveform inversion. The proposed algorithm was applied to the modified Marmousi2 model to obtain the results depending on the flow velocity. The effect of flow velocity on updated physical properties was verified by comparing the inversion results without considering flow velocity and those obtained from the proposed algorithm.

  • Since microgravity survey aims to delineate subsurface density structures in small scale, it requires inversion method, which is able to resolve small scale structures. It can be achieved by adopting a stabilizing functional which separates density boundary distinctly, which is different concept from general inversion routines. We composed Matlab-based interactive two-dimensional microgravity data inversion package containing several kinds of inversion routines with different stabilizing functional, for handling various geologic conditions and survey purposes. Different kinds of inversion routines in the package were verified and examined with representative synthetic data sets generated by numerical modeling. In addition, we applied the developed package to a real microgravity survey data.

  • Normal moveout correction is one of the main procedures of seismic reflection data processing and a crucial pre-processing step for AVO analysis. Unfortunately, stretch phenomenon, which is the intrinsic problem of NMO correction, degrades the quality of stack section and reliability of AVO analysis. Although muting is applied to resolve this problem, it makes far-offset traces more useful to develop an advanced NMO correction technique without stretch. In this paper, easy and detailed explanations are provided on the definition and methodology of NMO correction, and then the cause of stretch is explained with its characteristics. A graphical explanation for NMO correction is given for the intuitive understanding of stretch phenomenon. Additionally, the theoretical formulation is derived to quantitatively understand the NMO correction. Through explaining the muting process to remove NMO stretch, the limitations of conventional methods are investigated and the need for a new resolution comes to discussion. We describe a stretch-free NMO correction based on inverse theory among many different stretch-free NMO corrections. Finally, the stretch-free NMO correction is verified through synthetic example and real data.

  • In this study, an acoustic full-waveform inversion using Adam optimizer was proposed. The steepest descent method, which is commonly used for the optimization of seismic waveform inversion, is fast and easy to apply, but the inverse problem does not converge correctly. Various optimization methods suggested as alternative solutions require large calculation time though they were much more accurate than the steepest descent method. The Adam optimizer is widely used in deep learning for the optimization of learning model. It is considered as one of the most effective optimization method for diverse models. Thus, we proposed seismic full-waveform inversion algorithm using the Adam optimizer for fast and accurate convergence. To prove the performance of the suggested inversion algorithm, we compared the updated P-wave velocity model obtained using the Adam optimizer with the inversion results from the steepest descent method. As a result, we confirmed that the proposed algorithm can provide fast error convergence and precise inversion results.

  • The logarithmic objective function used in waveform inversion minimizes the logarithmic differences between the observed and modeled data. Laplace-domain waveform inversions usually adopt the logarithmic objective function and the diagonal elements of the pseudo-Hessian for optimization. In this case, we apply the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm to prevent the diagonal elements of the pseudo-Hessian from being zero or near-zero values. In this study, we analyzed the diagonal elements of the pseudo-Hessian of the logarithmic objective function and showed that there is no zero or near-zero value in the diagonal elements of the pseudo-Hessian for acoustic waveform inversion in the Laplace domain. Accordingly, we do not need to apply the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm when we regularize the gradient direction using the pseudo-Hessian of the logarithmic objective function. Numerical examples using synthetic and field datasets demonstrate that we can obtain inversion results without applying the Levenberg-Marquardt method.

  • Deterministic optimization, commonly used to find the geophysical inverse solutions, have its limitation that it cannot find the proper solution since it might converge into the local minimum. One of the solutions to this problem is to use global optimization based on a stochastic approach, among which a large number of particle swarm optimization (PSO) applications have been introduced. In this paper, I developed a geophysical inversion algorithm applying PSO method for the layered-earth resistivity inversion of the small-loop electromagnetic (EM) survey data and carried out numerical inversion experiments on synthetic datasets. From the results, it is confirmed that the PSO inversion algorithm could increase the inversion success rate even when attempting the inversion of small-loop EM survey data from which it might be difficult to find a best solution by applying the Gauss-Newton inversion algorithm.

  • It is not possible to define the earth's interior because of it complicity. However, it can be interpreted directly and/ or indirectly. Geophysics is the subject of this study. To study the possibility of construction supervision by geophysical method, geophysical prospecting was performed and studied at the SamYang pumping well area in Cheju Island, where, although underground dam was constructed, the saline water invade the pumping well area. This study focuses on the construction supervision by electrical measurements. Two electric resistivity survey lines are installed in the pumping well site, and at each line electric survey was conducted at ebb and flow tides. To increase the data quality SP (self-potential) survey was also performed. As a result the geophysical exploration methods explained the defect of construction well, and It shows that geophysical probe can be a useful tool for the construction supervision.

  • Sand ridges in the South Sea of Korea have been investigated to reveal the surface morphology and vortical variation in sediment physical property. Both field and laboratory methods such as high resolution subbottom profiling, side scan sonar, and physical property and sediment textural study on cored sediments were employed. Asymmetric sand waves are found on the ridge, No prominent difference in the sediment was recorded throughout the ridge area. Sediment sorting is generally poor due to interbedded mud. Average compressional wave velocity is 1753 m/sec for the sand dominated core section, Most of cores show two prominent facies: facies A and B. Facies A is defined as modern mud sediment and B is dominated by relict sand. Facies B is characterized by gravel, sand, and shell fragment, It is suggested that the facies B was developed in transgressive environment by tide and sporadic high energy events.
