  • As the sea connecting with the East Sea, the Sea of Okhotsk is the most potential area of gas hydrates in the world. In other to examine geophysical structures of gas hydrate-bearing sediments in the Sea of Okhotsk, the CHAOS (hydro-Carbon Hydrate Accumulation in the Okhotsk) international research expedition was carried out in August 2003. In the expedition, high-resolution seismic and geochemical survey was also conducted. Sparker seismic profiles show only diffusive high-amplitude reflections without BSRs at BSR depth. It means that BSR appears to be completely different images on seismic profiles obtained using different frequencies. Many gas chimneys rise up from BSR depth to seafloor. The chimneys can be divided into two groups with different seismic characteristics; wipe-out (WO) and enhanced reflection (ER) chimneys. Different seismic responses in the chimneys would be caused by amount of gas and gas hydrates filling in the chimneys. In hydroacoustic data, a lot of gas flares rise up several hundreds meters from seafloor to the water column. All flares took placed at the depths within gas hydrate stability zone. It is interpreted that gas hydrate-bearing sediments with low porosity and permeability due to gas hydrate filling in the pore space make good pipe around gas chimneys in which gas is migrating up without loss of amount. Therefore, large-scale gas flare at the site on gas chimney releases into the water column.

  • We carried out the Suspension PS log and gamma-gamma log in andesite and sedimentary rocks distributed near the area of Myodo-dong, Yeosu. The main purpose of this study was to find out the distribution of seismic velocities and densities and to analyze the correlation of the two rocks by comparing their geophysical well logs with rock cores. The distributions of P and S-wave velocities for two rocks represented in the study area showed a difference of about 2,000 m/sec and 1,500 m/sec with depth, respectively, while the distributions of densities had a discrepancy of about $0.35g/cm^3$ with depth. However, the results of geophysical well logs analysis were similar to the two rocks. Consequently, it is clear that these results are interpreted as a difference due to weathering rather than rock type. In particular, the RQD values showed a good correlation to geophysical well log data.

  • Instrumental observation of earth quakes in KIGAM was first attempted in the earty 1980`s by using 6 portable seismographs in the vicinity of Yang-San Faults. Now twenty-four permanent stations, which are equipped with short-period or broad-band seismometer, are included in seismic research network in KIGAM, including KSRS array station in Wonju which is consisted of 26 bore-hole stations. The seismic network of KIGAM is also linked to that of KEPRI(Korea Electric Power Research Institute)which is consisted of eight stations installed within and around the nuclear power plants. Owing to real-time data acquisition by telemetry, it became feasible to automatically locate hypocenters of the local events within fifteen minutes by computer data processing system, named KEMS(Korea Earthquake Monitoring System). Results of the hypocenter determination, together with observational data, are compiled and stored in the data base system. And they are published via web site whose URL is http://quake.kigam.re.kr KIGAM is also running t재 permanent geomagnetic stations installed in Daejun and Kyungju. The observed geomagnetic data are transmitted to Earthquake Research Centre in KIGAM by seismic network and compiled for the purpose of earthquake prediction research and other basic geophysical research.

  • As it was shown recently, climate changes in Antarctica resulted in interannual trends of some climatic parameters like sea level pressure, surface air temperature, ice thickness and others. These tendencies have effect on the Southern Ocean meteorological and hydrological regime. The following remote sensing data: AVHRR MCSST data, satellite altimetry data (merged data of mission ERS-2, TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, ENVISAT, GFO-1) are used to analyse the interannual and/or climatic tendency of sea surface temperature (SST) and sea level anomaly (SLA). According to the obtained results, SST has negative trend $-0.02{\pm}0.003^{\circ}C/yr$ for 24-yr record (1982-2005) and SLA has positive trend $0.01{\pm}0.005$ cm/yr for 24-yr record (1982-2005) and $0.24{\pm}0.026$ cm/yr for 12-yr record (1993-2005). However in some areas (for example, Pacific-Antarctic Ridge) SST and SLA tendencies are stronger $-0.065{\pm}0.007^{\circ}C/yr$ and $-0.21{\pm}0.05$ cm/yr, respectively.

  • We have conducted surface electrical resistivity surveys along with the electrical logging at Bookil-Myun, Chungwon-Goon, Choongchungbuk-Do to determine the depths of basement and water table, and for the purpose of preparing the basic input data for hydrogeologic model combined with GIS. A twenty lines of dipole-dipole array survey and a twenty-five stations of resistivity sounding were performed and ten holes were employed for electrical logging to cross check the surface data. A combined interpretation gave the quantitative information of the shallow geologic structure over the area and we constructed layers using the grid analysis of Arc/info. The constructed layers were turned out to be similar to the geologic structure confirmed from the drilling data and we concluded that the methodology adopted in this study would be applicable to hydrogeologic model setup as a tool of providing the basic input data.

  • There is a deep and useful connection between thermodynamics (the behavior of systems with many degrees of freedom in thermal equilibrium at a finite temperature) and combinational or continuous optimization (finding the minimum of a given multiparameter function). At the heart of the method of simulated annealing is an analogy with the way that liquids freeze and crystallize, or metals cool and anneal. This paper provides a detailed description of simulated annealing. Although computationaly intensive, when it is carefully implemented, simulated annealing is found to give superior results to more traditional methods of nonlinear optimization.

  • Aerial photo process with digital camera has some benefits. It is fast and simple by digital way incomparison with aerial photo based on film. Also it works with GPS/INS device to do direct geo-referencing. Sdata and digital map and GCP is produced. In base on it, ortho images are produced and compared with surveying data.

  • Examples of GPR survey results at a variety of archaeological sites are presented. Several new analyses which include static corrections for the tilt of the GPR antenna are shown for imaging of burial mounds with significant topography. Example archaeological site plans developed from GPR remote sensing of Roman and Japanese sites are given. The first completely automated GPR survey, using only Global Positioning Satellite navigation to create 3D data volumes, is employed for a site in Louisiana to detect lost graves of the Choctaw Indian Tribe.

  • R is a free software for statical computing and graphics. It compiles and runs not only on UNIX platforms but MS Windows. The R commands are easy and offer interactive help. R is used in extensive field by implementing packages. RSEIS, the package of R, enable us to do easy graphic process of seismic data. Here we illustrate an example of the seismic data process using RSEIS.
