  • In recent years, an increment of river engineering activities and more intensive use of flood plain, the river geomorphology has attracted considerable attention owing to an extensive land reclamation. One of the important problems is the maintenance of river meanders and almost all natural rivers exhibit the tendency to be a meander. A statistical analysis is applied to typifying their shapes and the meander characteristics are analyzed by channel model of line generalization algorithm in this study. This method is applied to Han River System. The results show that the variance of curvature is a better index to describe the meander intensity and the kurtosis is a good index to characterize the total lengh of the straight sections for a given reach. The channel model of line generalization algorithm gives good results in analysis of meander characteristics.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop riverbed techniques to activating ecological function of hyporheic zone. Hyporheic zone maybe simply defined as an active eco-tone between surface water and groundwater, which facilitates to exchange water, nutrients and aquatic habitat occur in response to variation in discharge and bed geomorphology. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of an applied riverbed technique for two years since its installation in the hyporheic zone. The experimental riverbed technique has been implemented on Anyang stream penetrating Anyang city in Gyunggi province. The dimension of the installed structure is 5.0 m in width, 46 m in length. Bottom layer is filled with rip-rap covered with gabion. After the implementation of the technique, the study conducts follow-up monitoring in two years of between 2011 and 2012. The results of follow-up monitoring for two years are as follows:1) In Hydro geomorphic process, the riverbed technique maintains hydraulic stability despite of several flood events in 2011, 2012. 2) After transformation to form pool-and-riffle habitat, for aquatic community composed of freshwater fish, macro invertebrate, and attached algae, the species diversity and population gradually increased. 3) The riverbed technique achieved desired effect on enhancement of ecological function in hyporheic zone.

  • One of the most important factors for estimating a flood runoff from streams is the lag time. It is well known that the lag time is affected by the morphometric properties of basin which can be expressed by catchment shape descriptors. In this paper, the notion of the geometric characteristics of an equivalent ellipse proposed by Moussa(2003) was applied for calculating the lag time of geomorphologic instantaneous unit hydrograph(GIUH) at a basin outlet. The lag time was obtained from the observed data of rainfall and runoff by using the method of moments and the procedure based on geomorphology was used for GIUH. The relationships between the basin morphometric properties and the hydrological response were discussed based on application to 3 catchments in Korea. Additionally, the shapes of equivalent ellipse were examined how they are transformed from upstream area to downstream one. As a result, the relationship between the lag time and descriptors was shown to be close, and the shape of ellipse was presented to approach a circle along the river downwards. These results may be expanded to the estimation of hydrological response of ungauged catchment.

  • Multichannel seismic survey has conducted along the South Scotia Ridge which is located in the northern part of Weddell sea, Antarctic sea. The South Scotia Ridge is part of continental crust extended from Antarctic Peninsula. It borders on Oceanic plates, the Scotia sea plate and Powell basin. Transtensional tectonics along the sinistral transform fault plate boundary led to the creation of the present tectonic geomorphology of the South Scotia Ridge. The fan-shaped deposits with angular unconformities in the central depression is interpreted as a divergent tectonic movement along the ridge.

  • Korea physiographic province is divided into two provinces which is northern Chugaryung graben zone and southern Chugraryung graben zone. Northern Chugraryung is also divided in to Gema block and Kohan block, and southern Chugraryung dividedinto Han block, Yongnam basin and Honam plain. The above mentioned macro geomorophic units is divided, mainly on the geotectonics. The meso geomorphic units is divided, based upon the regional distribution of topographic characteristic that is plateaus, mountains, mountain range, basins and great plain etc. Micro geomorphic units id into a mountain, a hill, a plain, and a lowland, and then it is formed by selfreliant topographic unit. And micro topographic (fan, peneplain, delta, etc) dealt with a characteristics unit. In this article has a disregarded amallest scale that is included flood plait natural levee, back marsh and oxbow lake etc. Accordingly, it shows macro units are meso units are 5, meso units are 53, micro units are 299. A study method of physiographic provincs prefered to aufsteigende and abstergands methoy. How to organically combine topographic factors can be seen in regional distribution of the peculiar topographic characteristics, for charage teristic of topographic makes a study on the topographic of micro unit such understanding as aufsteigende method. At the same time, since it can be studied systematically from marco unit to micro unit like the absteigende methods, I used both methods. And this establishment of physiographic province based on the scientific method depend on the base map of climate classification. Geology, Soil, Biology. I feel confident that it will be used the basic map for land use map, land classification map, study of geomorphology of Korea. And will be used for study of a topographic standard data.

  • Planting trees is a very common practice in the coastal dunefields of South Korea as a way to stabilize dune landscapes and protect inland residential areas from strong winds and blown sands. On the other hand, disturbing the original foredune environment may deteriorate the ability of coastal landsto recover from coastal erosion after storms, causing a retreat of coastline. However, there is little information of this sort on the surface of forested dunefields. Airborne LiDAR or drone-based mapping is not easily applicable in such areas. In this study, we developed a digital terrain model of Dasari dunefields, Chungnam Province, based on direct topographic surveys with real-time kinematic GPS and total stations. We also analyzed previous two aerial photographs taken in 1947 and 1966, in order to detect an older landforms of the dunefields. Results suggested that there have been little changes in geomorphology of the Dasari dunefields for the last 50 years, despite continued tree plantings. Today, there are remains of U-shaped structures such as blowouts and parabolic dunes in the dunefields.

  • The volcanic edifice of Ulleungdo is largely divided into a shield volcano underwater and a tholoide above seawater. The geological features of the volcano above seawater are basically alkali volcanic rocks that are further divided into five geological strata: agglomerates and tuffs trachyte and phonolite trachytic pumice trachyandesite, and sedimentary layer. The topography of Ulleungdo consists of volcanic landform on the whole, and such volcanic landform is weathered and eroded into various weathering landform, stream landform, coastal landform, structural landform, etc. Major volcanic topography includes caldera basin, central cone, and columnar joint, whereas weathering topography features, tafoni, gnamma, tor, weathered cave, talus, etc. In major coastal topography are sea cliff, wave-cut platform, sea stack, sea arch, sea cave, shingle beach, coastal terrace, etc. For stream topography, its development is minimal except for waterfalls.

  • Soil carbon(C) is an essential property for characterizing soil quality. Understanding spatial patterns of soil C is particularly limited for mountain areas. This study aims to predict the spatial pattern of soil C using terrain analysis in a steep mountainous area. Specifically, model performances and prediction uncertainties were investigated based on the number of resampling repetitions. Further, important predictors for soil C were also identified. Finally, the spatial distribution of uncertainty was analyzed. A total of 91 soil samples were collected via conditioned latin hypercube sampling and a digital soil C map was developed using support vector regression which is one of the powerful machine learning methods. Results showed that there were no distinct differences of model performances depending on the number of repetitions except for 10-fold cross validation. For soil C, elevation and surface curvature were selected as important predictors by recursive feature elimination. Soil C showed higher values in higher elevation and concave slopes. The spatial pattern of soil C might possibly reflect lateral movement of water and materials along the surface configuration of the study area. The higher values of uncertainty in higher elevation and concave slopes might be related to geomorphological characteristics of the research area and the sampling design. This study is believed to provide a better understanding of the relationship between geomorphology and soil C in the mountainous ecosystem.

  • This study introduces an analysis of the quantitative characteristics of topography and topographical changes based on precise 3D topography through 6 times surveys from December 2008 to January 2010 using Terrestrial LIDAR on the Malipo beach. The Malipo sand beach is mostly located between 0m to 1.5m MSL. The area of the beach above 2.25m, the Mean High Water, is very small. It have characteristics of topographical change of erosion and deposition along the entire coast line which more apparently appear in the northern beach than the southern part of the beach. Erosion prevails from spring to autumn, while during winter both erosion and deposition largely occur. Volumes from first and last survey were almost equal.
