This study presents the effects of geometrical dimensions of concrete gravity dams on the seismic response considering different base width/dam height (L/H) ratios. In the study, a concrete gravity dam with the height of 200 m is selected and finite element models of the dam are constituted including five different L/H ratios such as 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.00, 1.25. All dams are modeled in ANSYS software considering dam-reservoir-foundation interaction. 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake records are applied to models in upstream-downstream direction and linear time history analyses are performed. Dynamic equilibrium equations of motions obtained from the finite element models of the coupled systems are solved by using Newmark time integration algorithm. The seismic response of the models is evaluated from analyses presenting natural frequencies, mode shapes, displacements and principal stresses. The results show that the L/H ratios considerably affect the seismic response of gravity dams. Also, the model where L/H ratio is 1.00 has more desirable results and most appropriate representation of the seismic response of gravity dams.

The goal of this study was to predict lamina yield from logs of different diameter for production of cross laminated timber. Log characteristics of red pine (Pinus densiflora) and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), including diameter, length, volume, and defects were used for statistical and geometrical analyses, along with the lamina characteristics, including width, thickness, and defects. Based on the data obtained, the strong factors influencing the yield and grade of lamina from the two species were statistically evaluated. A geometrical approach was used for analysis of the yield from logs of given diameters. Statistical analysis showed that lamina yield was dependent on target lamina size but the grade of lamina was not related to any of the log characteristics. The suggested yield equations from the geometrical approach indicated an accuracy of less than 20% difference.

This paper deals with the geometrical nonlinear analyses of post-buckled columns with variable cross-section. The objective columns having variable cross-section of the width, depth and square tapers are supported by both hinged ends. By using the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory, differential equations governing the elastica of post-buckled column and their boundary conditions are derived. The solution methods of these differential equations which have two unknown parameters are developed. As the numerical results, equilibrium paths, elasticas and stress resultants of the post-buckled columns are presented. Laboratory scaled experiments were conducted for validating the theories developed in this study.

In this paper, the preliminary transfer orbit analysis results for the COMS mission were presented. As the first step of transfer orbit analysis, the preliminary analyses of LAE burn strategy, geometrical visibility, and launch window were performed. For the analysis process, all launcher nominates were divided into three groups according to the declination of LAE thrust angle. So, the three launch cases were assigned as the representative launcher of each group, respectively. They are Ariane-5, Atlas summer and winter launch cases. And all analyses were performed at the representative launcher of each group. One nominal and three back-up plans were considered for the establishment of LAE burn strategy. And for geometrical visibility analysis, four TT&C ground stations were considered. Finally, the preliminary launch window analysis was performed about the duration of one year from the first day of September 2008. The analysis results show that the all launch cases comply with the transfer orbit operation requirements.

The present paper investigates the stochastic seismic responses of steel structure systems with Partially Restrained (PR) connections by using Perturbation based Stochastic Finite Element (PSFEM) method. A stiffness matrix formulation of steel systems with PR connections and PSFEM and MCS formulations of structural systems are given. Based on the formulations, a computer program in FORTRAN language has been developed, and stochastic seismic analyses of steel frame and bridge systems have been performed for different types of connections. The connection parameters, material and geometrical properties are assumed to be random variables in the analyses. The Kocaeli earthquake occurred in 1999 is considered as a ground motion. The connection parameters, material and geometrical properties are considered to be random variables. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed SFEM algorithm are validated by comparison with results of Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method.
In this paper, a mathematical framework based on a homogenisation technique to simulate 'umbrella arch reinforcement system' (UARS) and its implementation into a 3D Finite Element program that can consider stage construction situations are presented. The constitutive model developed allows considering the main design parameters of the problem and only requires geometrical and mechanical properties of the constituents. Additionally, the use of a homogenisation approach implies that the generation of the Finite Element mesh can be easily produced and that re-meshing is not required as basic geometrical parameters such as the orientation of the pipes are changed. The model developed is used to simulate tunnelling with the UARS. From the analyses, the effects of the main design parameters on the elastic and the elastoplastic analyses are considered.
This study deals with the viability of using a designed geometrical model consists of plane, polar coordinates (PC) and span length in the determination of bridges deformation. The data of a Tianjin Yonghe bridge located in the southern part of China as collected by RTK-DGPS technique and Accelerometer were used in the analysis. Kalman filter and fast Fourier transformation (FFT) analyses were used to determine the frequency. The results indicate that the designed plane and PC geometrical model are easy to calculate the long-time structural deformation monitoring. In addition, the observed frequency using GPS with the rate of 20 Hz doesn't give correction natural frequency of the observation structures.

Computational study has been performed to observe the flow characteristics of combustion chamber for geometrical modification in municipal solid waste incinerator. A series of geometrical modification has been carried out as an attempt to reduce the size of recirculation zone, to obtain uniform flow field in the secondary combustion chamber and to improve the mixing of combustion gas. Two dimensional non-reacting turbulent flow has been studied as the first step to get such goals and the result of design optimization is presented. In addition, three dimensional non-reacting and reacting flow analyses were performed to verify the validity of two dimensional approach.

In this article, stability of composite conical shells subjected to dynamic external pressure is investigated by numerical and experimental methods. In experimental tests, cross-ply glass woven fabrics were selected for manufacturing of specimens. Hand-layup method was employed for fabricating the glass-epoxy composite shells. A test-setup that includes pressure vessel and data acquisition system was designed. Also, numerical analyses are performed. In these analyses, effect of actual geometrical imperfections of experimental specimens on the numerical results is investigated. For introducing the imperfections to the numerical models, linear eigen-value buckling analyses were employed. The buckling modes are multiplied by very small numbers that are derived from measurement of actual specimens. Finally, results are compared together while a good agreement between results of imperfect numerical analyses and experimental tests is observed.

This paper deals with a novel method for numerical analyses of the tapered geometrical non-linear beam with three unknown parameters, subjected a floating point load. The beams with hinged-movable end constraint are chosen as the objective beam. Cross sections of the beam whose flexural rigidities are functionally varied with the axial coordinate. The first order simultaneous differential equations governing the elastica of such beam are derived on the basis of the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. A novel numerical method for solving these equations is developed by using the iteration technique. The processes of the solution method are extensively discussed through a typical numerical example. For validating theories developed herein, laboratory scaled experiments are conducted.
