The aim of this study is to develop a 3D registration algorithm for positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) images acquired from independent PET/CT and MR imaging systems. Combined PET/CT images provide anatomic and functional information, and MR images have high resolution for soft tissue. With the registration technique, the strengths of each modality image can be combined to achieve higher performance in diagnosis and radiotherapy planning. The proposed method consists of two stages: normalized mutual information (NMI)-based global matching and independent component analysis (ICA)-based refinement. In global matching, the field of view of the CT and MR images are adjusted to the same size in the preprocessing step. Then, the target image is geometrically transformed, and the similarities between the two images are measured with NMI. The optimization step updates the transformation parameters to efficiently find the best matched parameter set. In the refinement stage, ICA planes from the windowed image slices are extracted and the similarity between the images is measured to determine the transformation parameters of the control points. B-spline. based freeform deformation is performed for the geometric transformation. The results show good agreement between PET/CT and MR images.
New Image registration techniques are developed for determining geometric distortions between two images of the same scene. First, the properties of the Fourier transform of a two dimensional function under the affine transformation are given. As a result, techniques for the estimation of the coefficients of the distortion model using the spectral frequency information are developed. Image registration can be achieved by applying the fast Fourier transform (FFT) technique for cross correlation of misregistered imagery to determine spatial distances. The correlation results may be rather broad, making detection of the peak difficult, what can be suppressed by enhancing cross-correlation technique. Yield greatly improves the delectability and high precision of image misregistration.

As applications of spaceborne SAR imagery are extended, there are increased demands for accurate registrations for better understanding and fusion of radar images. It becomes common to adopt multi-resolution SAR images to apply for wide area reconnaissance. Geometric correction of the SAR images can be performed by using satellite orbit and attitude information. However, the inherent errors of the SAR sensor's attitude and ground geographical data tend to cause geometric errors in the produced SAR image. These errors should be corrected when the SAR images are applied for multi-temporal analysis, change detection applications and image fusion with other sensor images. The undesirable ground registration errors can be corrected with respect to the true ground control points in order to produce complete SAR products. Speeded Up Robust Feature (SURF) technique is an efficient algorithm to extract ground control points from images but is considered to be inappropriate to apply to SAR images due to high speckle noises. In this paper, an attempt is made to apply SURF algorithm to SAR images for image registration and fusion. Matched points are extracted with respect to the varying parameters of Hessian and SURF matching thresholds, and the performance is analyzed by measuring the imaging matching accuracies. A number of performance measures concerning image registration are suggested to validate the use of SURF for spaceborne SAR images. Various simulations methodologies are suggested the validate the use of SURF for the geometric correction and image registrations and it is shown that a good choice of input parameters to the SURF algorithm should be made to apply for the spaceborne SAR images of moderate resolutions.
As a former level of MSC(Multi Spectral Camera) telescope of the KOMPSA T2satellite, the several performance tests of EOS(Electro Optical Subsystem) were performed in the EOS level. By these tests, not only the design requirement of payload can be verified but also the test result can be the important criterion to estimate the performance of payload in the launch and space orbit environment. The EOS Geometric Mapping test is to verify the accuracy of the alignment & assembly on the Subsystem of the MSC by measurement like these; LOS(Line of Sight), LOD(Line of Detector), Band to Band Registration, Optical Distortion and Reference Cube. This paper describes the test results and the analysis for the EOS Geometric Mapping.
Precise image-to-image registration is required to process multi-sensor data together. The purpose of this paper is to develop an algorithm that register between high-resolution optical and SAR images using linear features. As a pre-processing step, initial alignment was fulfilled using manually selected tie points to remove any dislocations caused by scale difference, rotation, and translation of images. Canny edge operator was applied to both images to extract linear features. These features were used to design a cost function that finds matching points based on their similarity. Outliers having larger geometric differences than general matching points were eliminated. The remaining points were used to construct a new transformation model, which was combined the piecewise linear function with the global affine transformation, and applied to increase the accuracy of geometric correction.

The following conclusions were obtained from the non-reconstructed and reconstructed subtraction images of the standard intraoral radiographs which were taken with paralleling technique with Rinn XCP only and with occlusal bite registration for geometric standardization using bilateral mandibular premolar and molar regions of two dry human skulls. 1. The SD of the overall subtraction images of the premolars and molars of the non-reconstructed, that is, the manual superimposition showed statistically significant difference between the non-registered and registered groups. 2. In non-reconstructed and non-registered cases, the quality of the subtraction images were improved when superimposition was focally done and this was more evident in areas where the radiographic images tend to be distorted due to anatomic reasons. 3. In non-reconstructed and registered cases, the subtraction images were consistent regardless of the anatomic site or the focus of superimposition. This means that the geometric standardization with only occlusal bite registration could produce serial radiographs which is suitable for subtraction. 4. The SD of the overall subtraction images of the premolars and molars of the reconstructed, that is, the automatic superimposition showed statistically insignificant difference between the non-registered and registered groups. This means that using reconstruction, subtraction radiography is possible without occlusal bite registration. 5. In reconstructed and non-registered cases, compatible quality of the subtraction images were obtained regardless of the anatomic site or area of the corresponding points. 6. In reconstructed and registered cases, best subtraction images whose quality showed sensitivity to the areas of corresponding points were obtained.

In radiotherapy treatment planning, it is critical to deliver the radiation dose to tumor and protect surrounding normal tissue. Recent developments in functional imaging and radiotherapy treatment technology have been raising chances to control tumor saving normal tissues. A brain phantom which could be used for image registration technique of CT-MR and CT-SPECT images using surface matching was developed. The brain phantom was specially designed to obtain imaging dataset of CT, MR, and SPECT. The phantom had an external frame with 4 N-shaped pipes filled with acryl rods, Pb rods for CT, MR, and SPECT imaging, respectively. 8 acrylic pipes were inserted into the empty space of the brain phantom to be imaged for geometric evaluation of the matching. For an optimization algorithm of image registration, we used Downhill simplex algorithm suggested as a fast surface matching algorithm. Accuracy of image fusion was assessed by the comparison between the center points of the section of N-shaped bars in the external frame and the inserted pipes of the phantom and minimized cost functions of the optimization algorithm. Technique with partially transparent, mixed images using color on gray was used for visual assessment of the image registration process. The errors of image registration of CT-MR and CT-SPECT were within 2mm and 4mm, respectively. Since these errors were considered within a reasonable margin from the phantom study, the phantom is expected to be used for conventional image registration between multimodal image datasets..

This paper presents a novel approach to real-time recognition of 3D environment and objects for various applications such as intelligent robots, intelligent vehicles, intelligent buildings,..etc. First, we establish the three fundamental principles that humans use for recognizing and interacting with the environment. These principles have led to the development of an integrated approach to real-time 3D recognition and modeling, as follows: 1) It starts with a rapid but approximate characterization of the geometric configuration of workspace by identifying global plane features. 2) It quickly recognizes known objects in environment and replaces them by their models in database based on 3D registration. 3) It models the geometric details the geometric details on the fly adaptively to the need of the given task based on a multi-resolution octree representation. SIFT features with their 3D position data, referred to here as stereo-sis SIFT, are used extensively, together with point clouds, for fast extraction of global plane features, for fast recognition of objects, for fast registration of scenes, as well as for overcoming incomplete and noisy nature of point clouds.

The aim of this study is to propose a fine co-registration approach for multi-temporal satellite images acquired from RapidEye, which has an advantage of availability for time-series analysis. To this end, we generate multitemporal ortho-rectified images using RPCs (Rational Polynomial Coefficients) provided with RapidEye images and then perform fine co-registration between the ortho-rectified images. A DEM (Digital Elevation Model) extracted from the digital map was used to generate the ortho-rectified images, and the RNCC (Registration Noise Cross Correlation) was applied to conduct the fine co-registration. Experiments were carried out using 4 RapidEye 1B images obtained from May 2015 to November 2016 over the Yeonggwang area. All 5 bands (blue, green, red, red edge, and near-infrared) that RapidEye provided were used to carry out the fine co-registration to show their possibility of being applicable for the co-registration. Experimental results showed that all the bands of RapidEye images could be co-registered with each other and the geometric alignment between images was qualitatively/quantitatively improved. Especially, it was confirmed that stable registration results were obtained by using the red and red edge bands, irrespective of the seasonal differences in the image acquisition.
Photogrammetric mapping procedures have gone through major developments due to significant improvements in its underlying technologies. The availability of GPS/INS systems greatly assist in direct geo-referencing of the acquired imagery. Still, photogrammetric datasets taken without the aid of positioning and navigation systems need control information for the purpose of surface reconstruction. Point features were, and still are, the primary source of control for the photogrammetric triangulation although other higher-order features are available and can be used. LIDAR systems supply dense geometric surface information in the form of three dimensional coordinates with respect to certain reference system. Considering the accuracy improvement of LIDAR systems in the recent years, LIDAR data is considered a viable supply of photogrammetric control. To exploit LIDAR data, new challenges are poised concerning the representation and reference system by which both the photogrammetric and LIDAR datasets are described. In this paper, registration methodologies will be devised for the purpose of integrating the LIDAR data into the photogrammetric triangulation. Such registration methodologies have to deal with three issues: registration primitives, transformation parameters, and similarity measures. Two methodologies will be introduced that utilize straight-line and areal features derived from both datasets as the registration primitives. The first methodology directly incorporates the LIDAR lines as control information in the photogrammetric triangulation, while in the second methodology, LIDAR patches are used to produce and align the photogrammetric model. Also, camera self-calibration experiments were conducted on simulated and real data to test the feasibility of using LIDAR patches for this purpose.
