Using three-components geomagnetic data from a permanent geomagnetic observatory in Icheon, we have computed the power spectrum of each geomagnetic component, amplitude, phase and estimation error of transfer function for each day in the 6 months period July 2002${\sim}$December 2002. The temporal variation of power spectrum have random appearances with repeating relative strong and weak magnitude, which is considered as solar activities. However, there is no clear long-term trend. In the case of amplitude, phase and error of transfer function, even though there are some random patterns over the periods of 1000 s and under 100 s, they seem to be comparatively stable without manifest temporal changes. Futhermore, we have estimated electrical field by assuming P$_{1}\;^{0}$ spherical harmonics and then calculated the approximated apparent resistivity for each day. As a result, the variations of resistivity depend on the temporal magnitude of spectral power in horizontal magnetic fields rather than hydrological changes in near surface.

Due to the limitations of the existing indoor positioning system depending on the radio wave, at present, it is required to introduce a new method in order to improve the accuracy in indoor environment. Recently, bio-inspired technology has become the future core technology. Thus, this study examined the accurate positioning method applying the abilities that animals with homing instinct measure their position by searching geomagnetic field with the use of their biomagnets. In order to confirm the applicability of geomagnetic field, a new source for indoor positioning, this study separated the constituent materials and building structure and designed the structures that can carry the actual magnetic field sensor and the data collection module. Subsequently, this study investigated the applicability of geomagnetic field as a positioning source by establishing the positioning system of Fingerprint method. In performance evaluation of the positioning system, the geomagnetic strength-based positioning system was similar to or approximately 20 percent higher than the wireless LAN-based positioning system in the buildings with the existing wireless LAN. Thus, in the environment without infrastructure for indoor positioning, the geomagnetic, an independent earth resource, can make it possible to realize the indoor positioning.

An air-burst munition is limited in space, so there is a limit on the size of the fuze and the amount of ammunition. In order to increase a firepower to a target with limited ammunition, it is necessary to concentrate the firepower on the ground instead of the omnidirectional explosion after flying to the target. This paper explores the design and verification of a ground-detection sensor that detects the direction of the ground and determines the flight-distance of an air-burst munition using a single axis geomagnetic sensor. Prior to the design of the ground detection sensor, a geomagnetic sensor model mounted on the spinning air-burst munition is analyzed and a ground-detection algorithm by simplifying this model is designed. A high speed rotating device to simulate a rotation environment is designed and a geomagnetic sensor and a remote-recording system are fabricated to obtain geomagnetic data. The ground detection algorithm is verified by post-processing the acquired geomagnetic data. Taking miniaturization and low-power into consideration, the ground detection sensor is implemented with analog devices and the processor. The output signal of the ground detection sensor rotating at an arbitrary rotation speed of 200 Hz is connected to the LED (Light Emitting Diode) in the high speed rotating device and the ground detection sensor is verified using a high-speed camera.
Through the coupling between the near-earth space environment and the polar ionosphere via geomagnetic field lines, the variations occurred in the magnetosphere are transferred to the polar region. According to recent studies, however, the polar ionosphere reacts not only passively to such variations, but also plays active roles in modifying the near-earth space environment. So the study of the polar ionosphere in terms of geomagnetic disturbance becomes one of the major elements in space weather research. Although it is an indirect method, ground magnetic disturbance data can be used in estimating the ionospheric current distribution. By employing a realistic ionospheric conductivity model, it is further possible to obtain the distributions of electric potential, field-aligned current, Joule heating rate and energy injection rate associated with precipitating auroral particles and their energy spectra in a global scale with a high time resolution. Considering that the ground magnetic disturbances are recorded simultaneously over the entire polar region wherever magnetic station is located, we are able to separate temporal disturbances from spatial ones. On the other hand, satellite measurements are indispensible in the space weather research, since they provide us with in situ measurements. Unfortunately it is not easy to separate temporal variations from spatial ones specifically measured by a single satellite. To demonstrate the usefulness of ground magnetic disturbance data in space weather research, various ionospheric quantities are calculated through the KRM method, one of the magneto gram inversion methods. In particular, we attempt to show how these quantities depend on the ionospheric conductivity model employed.
We are developing empirical space weather (solar flare, solar proton event, and geomagnetic storm) forecast models based on solar data. In this talk we will review our main results and recent progress. First, we have examined solar flare (R) occurrence probability depending on sunspot McIntosh classification, its area, and its area change. We find that sunspot area and its increase (a proxy of flux emergence) greatly enhance solar flare occurrence rates for several sunspot classes. Second, a solar proton event (S) forecast model depending on flare parameters (flare strength, duration, and longitude) as well as CME parameters (speed and angular width) has been developed. We find that solar proton event probability strongly depends on these parameters and CME speed is well correlated with solar proton flux for disk events. Third, we have developed an empirical storm (G) forecast model to predict probability and strength of a storm using halo CME - Dst storm data. For this we use storm probability maps depending on CME parameters such as speed, location, and earthward direction. We are also looking for geoeffective CME parameters such as cone model parameters and magnetic field orientation. We find that all superstorms (less than -200 nT) occurred in the western hemisphere with southward field orientations. We have a plan to set up a storm forecast method with a three-stage approach, which will make a prediction within four hours after the solar coronagraph data become available. We expect that this study will enable us to forecast the onset and strength of a geomagnetic storm a few days in advance using only CME parameters and the WSA-ENLIL model. Finally, we discuss several ongoing works for space weather applications.
A GDS (Geomagnetic Depth Sounding) method, one of extremely low-frequency EM methods, has been carried out to examine conductivity anomalies in and around the Korean Peninsula. In this study, new GDS data acquired at the five sites in south-eastern area of the peninsula were incorporated into the previous GDS data. In order to quantitatively interpret observed induction arrows, the 3-D MT modeling considering the surrounding seas of the Korean Peninsula has been performed to evaluate sea effect at each GDS site. The modeling results revealed that the observed real induction arrows were not explained by solely sea effects, consequently two conductive structures that are responsible for the discrepancies between observed and calculated induction arrows were proposed. The first one is the Imjingang Belt, which is thought as an extension of Quiling-Dabie-sulu continental collision belt. The effects of the Imjingang Belt clearly appear at the site YIN and ICHN. The second one is the HCL (Highly Conductive Layer), which is considered as a conductive anomaly by mantle upwelling produced in back-basin region. The effects of the HCL are seen at the site KZU, KMT101, and KMT 107 in the south-eastern region of the Korean Peninsula.
In this paper, we present a good example of extreme solar and geomagnetic activities from October to November, 2003. These activities are characterized by very large sunspot groups, X-class solar flares, strong particle events, and huge geomagnetic storms. We discuss ground-based and space-based data in terms of space weather scales. Especially, we present several solar and geomagnetic disturbance data produced in Korea : sunspots, geo-magnetograms, aurora, Ionogram, and Total Electron Content (TEC) map by GPS data. Finally, we introduce some examples of the satellite orbit and communication effects caused by these activities; e.g., the disturbances of the KOMPSAT-1 operational orbit and HF communication.
The solar eclipse affects terrestrial environments in various aspects. For instance, it is well known that the electron concentration and current density decrease in the ionosphere due to the reduction of solar irradiation during solar eclipse. In this study, we carry out the statistical analysis of x, y, z, H-components, and the intensity of the geomagnetic field using the ground based geomagnetic data observed during the solar eclipses from 1991 to 2016. First, we confirm that characteristic decreases in the x and H-components can be seen in the vicinity of the maximum eclipse time at the observing site. Second, we find that the decrease in x and H-components is more conspicuous during the total solar eclipse rather than the partial or annular eclipses. We also find that such a dip is likely to be noticed when the observing site locates in the second half compared to the first half of the eclipse path, as well as when the eclipse occurs in dusk side than in dawn side. Third, we find that reductions in the ground geomagnetic field by the solar eclipse are more evident in the ascending phase of the solar cycle than in the descending phase. Finally, we briefly discuss implications of our findings.

In this study, we analyzed that the geomagnetic storms in the end of October 2003 influenced a positioning of GPS permanent stations. The data that observed in total 23 permanent GPS stations are used, and did a precisely analysis every hour with GIPSY-OASIS II software to produced ITRF2000 coordinates of each stations. After that we analyzed and compared the ITRF2000 coordinates calculated every hour with public ITRF2000 results of each stations. As a result of this study, the increases of positioning errors showed well when geomagnetic storms happened and the maximum error reached about 0.80m.
The area where age dating of the seafloor and interpretation of geomagnetic basic structure are conducted is also important in the aspect of geophysics. Near the sea mount (water depth to the top is 3900m and 6500m to the bottom), there are Mesozoic magnetic lineations at the sea-side flank along the trench axis. A two dimensional model analysis of Talwani and Heirtzler(1964) and a three dimensional model analysis of Talwani are performed by using data obtained from the marine proton magnetometer. Distribution, direction of the lineation, amplitude and period of magnetic anomaly are correlated and analysed with speed of the plate movement and lineation of the sea mount. In the west and north-west Pacific there are lots of huge sea mounts retaining the history of oceanic crust. This indicates that geomagnetic basis subsided into the oceanic crust and has interest in the aspects of the isostasy theory of the gravity.
