In this study, a documentary survey, face mapping, and stability analysis were performed on the collapsed colluvial soil slope. The purpose of this paper is to identify the cause of slope failure and determine slope stability for similar areas. Boring samples were extracted from the slump and laboratory tests were performed to find out the cause of slope failure. In addition, the limit equilibrium method was used in order to determine the stability of the slope. As a result of this investigation and the analysis of data, the type of collapse and cause of slope failure have been shown to have a strong correlation with the natural geographical and geological features which make up the collapse profile of the study area. These results will help to develop guidelines for formulating countermeasure methods.

To understand the current seismic activity and regional tectonic status in and around Gyeongsang basin, Korea Institute of Geology, Mining, and Materials(KIGAM) has performed the earthquake monitoring around the Gyeongsang basin since early 1980's with portable analog seismic instruments for about two months every year. As a part of POSEIDON project, Korea-Japan joint observation around gyeongsang basin in 1991 and 1992, was performed using by temporary seismic station. KIGAM has been continuously operated nine short-period 3-components digital seismic stations since the end of 1994. During the observation period, 247 earthquakes were analyzed and their magnitude was less than 4.5. In general, we could not find any relationship between seismic activity and known surface geological features. But the epicenters were rather concentrated with NW-SE direction. The most active seismicity was found in Gyeongbuk Gyeongjugun Seokeupri and Hyodongri, and Yeongilgun Janggiri and Guryongpo in land, and in three region along the east coast which are 10km and 30km east off from Gampo and 30km east off from Jongja in offshore.
Hyperspectral image divides VNIR region to over 200 bands which can show continuous spectrum with 10 nm spectral resolution. This property is useful in geology where a spectral feature which is decided by chemical compositions and crystalline structures is recorded well. While this field has been studied variously in foreign countries, the studies are in the early stage in Korea. In this study, characteristic materials associated with AMD were classified by using EO-1 HYPERION data which is a spaceborne hyperspectral image and topographical map and DEM and geochemical map were analyzed in conjunction with the image in order to examine that classified minerals are secondary minerals by AMD.
Foraminifera are protists that inhabit diverse marine environments and show high abundance and diversity. However, previous studies on foraminifera in Korea mostly focused on geological and paleoecological fields and were conducted in a limited area. Therefore, there is a high possibility for discovering new and unrecorded species. Here we describe three newly recorded foraminiferal species from the southwestern part of Jeju Island during a survey on the meiofaunal community, which belongs to three different genera (Ammobaculites, Cylindroclavulina, Saracenaria), three families (Lituolidae, Vaginulinidae, Valvulinidae), and three orders (Lituolida, Textulariida, Vaginulinida): Ammobaculites formosensis Nakamura, 1937, Cylindroclavulina bradyi (Cushman, 1911), and Saracenaria hannoverana (Franke, 1936). These species have been reported from Chinese region in the East China Sea, however this is the first report from Korean waters. Particularly, Cylindroclavulina bradyi is the first report of the genus Cylindroclavulina in Korean waters. The present study supports the diversity of foraminiferal species in Korea, and the necessity of further surveys in Korean waters.
Geological mapping, borehole drilling, electrical resistivity, and seismic tomography surveys were conducted in order to map underground cavities and better understand the mechanisms driving subsidence in a limestone region in Korea. Limestone outcrops in the study area generally alternate between calcite-rich and calcite-poor rock. The results reveal that in areas experiencing subsidence, cavities occur mainly around soil-rock boundaries at depths of 7~14 m. These results are based on comparative analyses of electrical resistivity, seismic tomography, and borehole logging data. The volumes of the cavities are relatively small in a range of 558~835 ㎥ and they have a shape typical of suffosion sinkholes, which are typically found where sandy soils overlie bedrock cavities.
The primary purpose of this research is to understand those elements that define heavy metals contamination and to propose a novel assessment method based on principal component analysis (PCA) in the Yangping River region of Lingbao City, China. This paper makes detailed calculations regarding such factors the single-factor assessment ($P_i$) and Nemerow's multi-factor index ($P_N$) of heavy metals found in the surface water of the Yangping River. The maximum values of $P_i$ (Cd) and $P_i$ (Pb) were determined to be 892.000 and 113.800 respectively. The maximum value of $P_N$ was calculated to be 639.836. The results of Pearson's correlation analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis, and PCA indicated heavy metal groupings as follows: Cu, Pb, Zn and As, Hg, Cd. The PCA-based pollution index ($P_{an}$) of samplings was subsequently calculated. The relative coefficient square was valued at 0.996 between $P_{an}$ and $P_N$, which indicated that $P_{an}$ is able to serve as a new heavy metal pollution index; not only this index able to eliminate the influence of the maximum value of $P_i$, but further, this index contains the principal component elements needed to evaluate heavy metal pollution levels.
Geological, structural, and fracture density maps were drawn up to clarify the groundwater flow system around the Geumjeong Mountain, Busan. The results show that the topographical basin formed in the Sanseong Town is considered as a major recharge area of groundwater around the Geumjeong Mt. Because NS-trending fault and ENE-trending fault are intersecting and NS-trending and EW-trending fracture sets are highly developed in the basin, it is believed that the geological structure was developed in the basin which facilitates ground recharge. Based on the density distributions and characteristics of fractures, it is possible that the recharged groundwater in the basin would circulate to the depth of about 3~4 km and finally would reach the Dongnae Hot-spring region.
Faults in rock mass have strong influences on the behaviors of rock structure such as rock slope, tunnel and underground space. Thus, it is very important to analyse for the characteristics of fault rocks in design for tunnel. But, due to the limitation of geotechnical investigation in design stages, tunnel engineers have to carry out the face mapping and additional geological survey during tunnel excavation to find the distribution of faults and the engineering properties of faults for support and reinforcement design of tunnel. In this study, various geological survey and field tests were carried out to analyse the characteristics of the large thrust fault zone through the large sectional tunnel is constructed in mica-schist region. Also, the distribution of structural geology, the shape of thrust faults and the mechanical properties of fault rock were studied for the reasonable design of the reinforcement and support method for the highly fractured fault zone in the large-span tunnel.
Phylogeographic and feeding ecological studies of seven terrestrial mustelid species (Carnivora, Mustelidae), the Japanese marten Martes melampus, the sable Martes zibellina, the Japanese badger Meles anakuma, the ermine or the stoat Mustela erminea, the Japanese weasel Mustela itatsi, the least weasel Mustela nivalis, and the Siberian weasel Mustela sibirica, representing four biogeographic patterns in the Japanese archipelagos (Hokkaido, Honshu-Shikoku-Kyushu, Tsushima, and Hokkaido-Honshu), were reviewed in order to clarify causes for the faunal assemblage processes of those mustelid species in Japan. Here, three main constraints were extracted as important factors on the mustelid assemblage. First, fundamental evolutionary differences maintained by niche conservatism in each ecologically diversified lineage ("evolutionary constraint") would enable the species to co-occur without any major problem (coexistence among Martes, Meles, and Mustela species). Second, "ecological constraints" would force two closely related species to be allopatric by competitive exclusion (Mu. itatsi and Mu. sibirica) or to be sympatric by resource partitions (Mu. erminea and Mu. nivalis). Third and most importantly, "geological constraints" would allow specific species to be embraced by a particular geographic region, primarily deciding which species co-occurs. The allopatric distribution of two Martes species in Japan would have been established by the strong effect of the geological separation in Tsugaru Strait. Elucidating both phylogeny and ecology of co-existing species in a community assemblage is important to know which species possess distinct lineage and which ecological traits are adapted to local environments, fulfilling the requirement of the field of conservation biology that endemism and adaptation should both be considered. The Japanese archipelagos would, therefore, provide valuable insight into the conservation for small carnivoran species.

The study area is located in the southern part of the M'aider Paleozoic basin in the Moroccan Eastern Anti-Atlas. It is an arid region, characterized by minimal vegetation cover, which can provide an ideal environment to apply remote sensing. In this study, remote sensing and field investigations were integrated for lithological and structural lineaments mapping. The Landsat 8 OLI data were processed in order to understand the role of lithology and geological structures in the distribution of mineral deposits in the study area. To achieve this purpose, the Color Composite (CC), the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Band Rationing transformation (BR) tests were performed. The results of remote sensing techniques coupled with field investigations have shown that the zones of high lineaments densities are highly correlated with the occurrences of barite mineralization. These findings depict a spatial relationship between structural lineaments and the mineralization distribution zones. Therefore, the barite and Iron oxides mineralization veins, which occur mainly in the Ras Kammouna district, seem to have a structural control. The methodological approach used in this study examining lithological mapping and lineament extractions can be used to explore mineral deposits in arid regions to a high degree of efficiency.
