  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the susceptibility of landslides at Kangneung area, Korea, using a Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing. Landslide locations were identified from interpretation of satellite image and field surveys. The topographic, soil, forest, geologic, lineament and land cover data were collected, processed and constructed into a spatial database using GIS and remote sensing data. Using frequency ratio model which is one of the probability model, the relationships between landslides and related factors such as slope, aspect, curvature and type of topography, texture, material, drainage and effective thickness of soil, type, age, diameter and density of wood, lithology, distance from lineament and land cover were calculated as frequency ratios. Then, the frequency ratio were summed to calculate a landslide susceptibility indexes and the landslide susceptibility maps were generated using the indexes. The results of the analysis were verified and cross-validated using actual landslide location data. The verification results showed satisfactory agreement between the susceptibility map and the existing data on landslide locations.

  • Background: This study purposed to analyze the spatial accessibility of women in childbearing age to the healthcare organizations (HCOs) providing delivery services in Gangwon-do. Methods: Network analysis was applied to assess the spatial accessibility based on the travel time and road travel distance. Travel time and travel distance were measured between the location of HCOs and the centroid of the smallest administrative areas, eup, myeon, and dong in Gangwon-do. Korean Transport Database Center provided road network GIS (Geographic Information System) Database in 2015 and it was used to build the network dataset. Two types of network analysis, service area analysis and origin-destination (OD)-cost matrix analysis, applied to the created network dataset. Service area analysis defined all-accessible areas that are within a specified time, and OD-cost matrix analysis measured the least-cost paths from the HCOs to the centroids. The visualization of the number of the HCOs and the number of women in childbearing age on the Ganwon-do map and network analysis were performed with ArcGIS ver. 10.0 (ESRI, Redlands, CA, USA). Results: Twenty HCOs were providing delivery services in Gangwon-do in 2016. Over 50% of the women in childbearing age were aged more than 35 years. Service area analysis found that 89.56% of Gangwon-do area took less than 60 minutes to reach any types of HCOs. For tertiary hospitals, about 74.37% of Gangwon-do area took more than 60 minutes. Except Wonju-si and Hoengseong-gun, other regions took more than 60 minutes to reach the tertiary hospital. Especially, Goseong-gun, Donghae-si, Samcheok-si, Sokcho-si, Yanggu-gun, Cheorwon-gun, and Taebaek-si took more than 100 minutes to the tertiary hospital. Conclusion: This study provided that the accessibility toward the tertiary hospital was limited and it may cause problems in high-risk delivery patients such as over 35 years. Health policy makers will need to handle the obstetric accessibility issues in Gangwon-do.

  • Quantification of carbon absorption and understanding the human induced land use changes (LUC) forms one of the major study with respect to global climatic changes. An attempt study has been made to quantify the carbon absorption by LUC through remote sensing technology. The Landsat imagery four time periods was classified with the hybrid classification method in order to quantify carbon absorption by LUC. Thereafter, for estimating the amount of carbon absorption, the stand biomass of forest was estimated with the total weight, which was the sum of individual tree weight. Individual tree volumes could be estimated with the crown width extracted from digital forest cover type map. In particular, the carbon conversion index and the ratio of the $CO_2$ molecular weight to the C atomic weight, reported in the IPCC guideline, was used to convert the stand biomass into the amount of carbon absorption. Total carbon absorption has been modeled by taking areal estimates of LUC of four time periods and carbon factors for land use type and standing biomass. Results of this study, through LUC suggests that over a period of construction, 7.10 % of forest and 9.43 % of barren were converted into urban. In the conversion process, there has been a loss of 6.66 t/ha/y (7.94 %) of carbon absorption from the study area.

  • A comprehensive mapping project for agroclimatic zoning in South Korea will end by April 2010, which has required 4 years, a billion won (ca. 0.9 million US dollars) and 22 experts from 7 institutions to complete it. The map database from this project may be categorized into primary, secondary and analytical products. The primary products are called "high definition" digital climate maps (HD-DCMs) and available through the state of the art techniques in geospatial climatology. For example, daily minimum temperature surfaces were prepared by combining the climatic normals (1971-2000 and 1981-2008) of synoptic observations with the simulated thermodynamic nature of cold air by using the raster GIS and microwave temperature profiling which can quantify effects of cold air drainage on local temperature. The spatial resolution of the gridded climate data is 30m for temperature and solar irradiance, and 270m for precipitation. The secondary products are climatic indices produced by statistical analysis of the primary products and includes extremes, sums, and probabilities of climatic events relevant to farming activities at a given grid cell. The analytical products were prepared by driving agronomic models with the HD-DCMs and dates of full bloom, the risk of freezing damage, and the fruit quality are among the examples. Because the spatial resolution of local climate information for agronomic practices exceeds the current weather service scale, HD-DCMs and the value-added products are expected to supplement the insufficient spatial resolution of official climatology. In this lecture, state of the art techniques embedded in the products, how to combine the techniques with the existing geospatial information, and agroclimatic zoning for major crops and fruits in South Korea will be provided.

  • Spatial information is essential for administrative affairs. So many Administrative Information System(AIS)s and Geographic Information System(GIS)s have been implemented at local government to support administrative affairs. AIS deals with document based information, and is not designed to use map information. Also, various information is not matched, because address systems for AIS and coordinate system for GIS are different. Therefore, existing AIS and GIS are not suitable for linking administrative affairs and spatial information. This paper deals with the enterprise architecture for local government to support the linkage of administrative affairs and spatial information. Enterprise architecture in this paper is composed of business architecture, data architecture, application architecture, and technical architecture. Each architecture is designed up to planner's and owner's level. Detail structures of each architecture follow the practical guidance for applying e-government enterprise architecture in Korea. Business and data architecture are applied to transportation administrative affairs.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate not only the watershed soil loss but also its temporal changes of Kyungan River basin, the study area, due to the land development. To analyze the soil loss of the river basin, USLE was employed. GIS and remote sensing were also utilized to estimate the soil loss. The data for this analysis consist of a series of thematic map and remotely sensed data. The remotely sensed images for this study are Landsat TM(Oct, 28, 1997 & Sep. 22, 1992), In Kyungan River basin, not only the detection of temporal changes of land use and GVI, but also the estimation of soil loss provided very significant factors that affect to the watershed environment quality. The management of the factors of vegetative cover, slope steepness and length were the keys to reduce soil loss and solve conservation and protection issues of Kyungan River basin. GIS application with USLE to the watershed analysis allows the planner to recognize sensitive sites and to plan strategies to minimize soil loss.

  • When we derive multi-scale databases from a source spatial database, thegeometries and topological relations in the source database are transformed according to a predefined set of constraints. This means that the derived databases should be checked to see if the constraints are respected during the construction or updates of databases and to maintain the consistency of multi-scale databases. In this paper, we focus on the topological consistency between the source and derived databases, which is one of the important constraints to respect. In particular, we deal with the method of assessment of topological consistency, when 2-dimensional objects are collapsed to 1-dimensional ones. We introduce eight types of topological relations between 2-dimensional objects and 19 topological ones between 1-dimensional objects and propose four different strategies to convert 2-dimensional topological relations in the source database to 1-dimensional ones objects in the target database. With these strategies, we guarantee the topological consistency between multi-scale databases.

  • This research intended to estimate the damage information from torrential rainfalls using airphotos and spatial data which have been rapidly increasing their applicability recently. The study area was Bonghwagun of Gyungsangbukdo where the large amount of damages were occurred from torrential rainfall in July, 2008. For this study, the database was constructed for the study area by collecting usable data. The interpretable items from the airphotos of 40cm spatial resolution were selected. Also, the useful GIS layers such as road were selected in the digital map to extract the damage information more accurately and rapidly. The damaged area was easily identified through the comparison of pre- and post-disaster airphotos. The recovery cost was estimated by applying unit cost to the damaged area. GIS's overlay function was used to extract the damage information of for individual items damaged. The method for extracting damages information using GIS and airphotos could be more efficient and cost effective in case of relatively wide and unapproachable damaged areas. It is also expected that the method using high resolution imagery would lead to minimize the secondary damages as well since it can facilitate the damage estimation within short period of time thereby supporting early securing budget for recovery.

  • To utilize the survey method using the geodetic satellite GPS, we tried to analysis the GPS/Leveling and the geopotential model of the 26 GPS observation points including 23 BM and 3 triangulation points with approximately 16-km interval selected from the Andong geographic map with a scale of 1:250,000. The average deviations of the geopotential model calculated from the results of analysis to the GPS/Leveling and the previously developed geopotential models(EGM96, OSU91A, and KGEOID), are 0.493 m, 0.277 m, and 0.195 m, respectively and RMS errors are $\pm$0.299 m, $\pm$0.152 m, and $\pm$ 0.133 m. The general trend of geoid undulations, however, shows an increasing pattern to the NW-SE direction. It has been also reported that the geoid undulation related with topographic-highs and geoid-highs although very poor relationship is shown in this area.
