  • The three dimensional model method is widely applied in resource development for feasibility study, mine design, excavation planning and process management by constructing the database of various data in 3 dimensional space. Most of geophysical surveys for the purpose of engineering and resource development are performed in 2 dimensional line survey due to the restriction of the field situation, technical or economical situation and so on. The acquired geophysical data are used as the input for the 2 dimensional inversion under the 2 dimensional assumption. But the geophysical data are affected by 3 dimensional space. Therefore in order to reduce the error caused by 2 dimensional assumption, the 2 dimensional inversion result must be interpreted considering the additional information such as 3 dimensional topography, geological structure, borehole survey etc. The applicability and usability of 3 dimensional modeling method are studied by reviewing the case study to the geophysical data acquired in field of engineering and resource development.

  • The accurate and quantitative ground information on the hydraulic conductivity characteristics of rock mass is one of the key factors for evaluation of the hydro-geological behaviour of rock mass around an excavated opening under high water pressure. For tunnel and rock structures in seabed, where the sea acts as an infinite source of water, its importance become greater with increasing construction depth below sea level. In this study, to improve the problems related with poor system configuration and incorrect data acquisition of previous hydraulic packer testing equipment, we newly developed an integrated main frame and 30 bar level waterproof downhole sonde apparatus, which were optimized for deep hydraulic packer test in seabed rock mass. Integration of individual test equipment into one frame allows safe and efficient field testing work on a narrow offshore drilling platform. For the integrated type main frame, it is possible to make precise stepwise control of downhole net injection pressure at intervals of $2.0kg_f/cm^2$ or less with dual hydraulic oil volume controller. To ensure the system performance and the operational stability of the prototype mainframe and downhole sonde apparatus, the field feasibility tests were completed in two research boreholes, and using the developed apparatus, the REV(Representative Elementary Volume) scale deep hydraulic packer tests were successfully carried out at a borehole located in the basalt region, Jeju. In this paper, the characteristics of the new testing apparatus are briefly introduced and also some results from the laboratory and in-situ performance tests are shown.

  • An effective seismic reflection technique for mapping the cavities and bedrock surface in carbonate rocks is described. The high resolution seismic reflection images were successfully registered by using the hydrophones employed in the stream-water driven trench, and were effectively focused by applying optimal data processing sequences. The strategy included enhancement of the signal interfered with the large-amplitude scattering noise, through pre- and post stack processing such as time-variant filtering, bad-trace editing, residual statics, velocity analysis, and careful muting after NMO (normal moveout) correction. The major reflections including the bedrock surface were mapped with the desired resolution and were correlated to the seismic crosshole tomographic data. Shallow major reflectors could be identified and analyzed on the AGC (auto gain control)-applied field records. Three subhorizontal layers were identified with their distinct velocities; overburden (<3000 m/s), sediments (3000-4000 m/s), limestone bedrock (>4000 m/s). Taking into account of no diffraction effects in the field records, gravel-rich overburdens and sediments are considered to be well sorted. Based on the images mapped consistently on the whole survey line and seismic velocity increasing with depth, this area probably lacks in sizable cavities (if any, no air-filled cavities).

  • In this study, buoyancy-resistance permanent anchor was considered to prevent uplift pressure of a building structure. However, this test was failed to put anchor body in the boring hole because of the rapid outflow of ground water and coefficient of permeability. In addition, the hole where the anchor body was forcefully inserted constantly flew the sea water and cement. And it was found that anchor was not settled in the ground. In order to solve this problem, jet grouting method was applied to block the ground water and the single grouted column method was chosen to install the buoyancy-resistance permanent anchor. In this paper, the single grouted column method was applied with the general jet grouting methods and grout material was fixed by 3-field tests. These tests confirmed the effect of permeability and ground improvement with field permeability test by core sampling, Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and unconfined compression test. Confirming the stability of the buoyancy-resistance permanent anchor with installation and tension test, application of the single grouted column method in the volcanic clastic zones was verified.

  • In the present study, it were performed an unconfined compression test and a field applicability test according to a mixed ratio of SS, soil type and curing period to analyze strength and deformation characteristic in order to evaluate engineering characteristics of soil mixed pavements using the eco-friendly soil stabilizer (SS). The test results revealed that SS mixed soil shows fast strength development at the initial curing time while 28-day strength amounted for 97% of the final strength. Furthermore, coarse-grained dredged sand (DS) and weathered granitic soil (WGS) have a larger ratio of deformation coefficient with respect to unconfined compressive strength than fine-grained dredged clay (DC) and organic soil (OS). Moreover, a comparison test between natural and forced drying conditions was conducted and test result showed 54% to 67% of strength degradation while having 55% to 63% of strength degradation in the freezing and thawing test result. Finally, a repeated loading test result showed that DS experiences up to 35% of strength reduction compared to initial strength under 10,000 times loading in maximum. Thus, it was validated that an appropriate amount of fine-grained sand is necessary to secure resistance capability to repeated loading.

  • Since the early 2010s, the social importance of research and practical projects targeting deep geological disposal of high-level nuclear waste, underground CO2 storage and characterization of deep subsurface by borehole investigation has been increasing. In this regard, there is also a significant increase in the need for in situ test technology to obtain quantitative and reliable information on the hydraulic characteristics of deep rock mass. Through years of research and development, we have independently set up Deep borehole Hydraulic Test System (DHTS) based on the key apparatuses designed and made with our own technology. Using this system, high precision constant pressure injection tests were successfully completed at the two 1 km boreholes located in Mesozoic granite and sedimentary rock regions, Gyeongju. During the field tests, it was possible to measure very low flow rate below 0.01 l/min with micro flow rate injection/control module. In this paper, the major characteristics of DHTS are introduced and also some results obtained from the high precision field tests under the deep and low permeable rock mass environment are briefly discussed.

  • While utilizing high resolution satellite image for land use classification has been popularized, object-oriented classification has been adapted as an affordable classification method rather than conventional statistical classification. The aim of this study is to extract the paddy field area using object-oriented classification with time series NDVI from high-resolution satellite images, and the RapidEye satellite images of Jaeryung-gun in North Korea were used. For the implementation of object-oriented classification, creating objects by setting of scale and color factors was conducted, then 3 different land use categories including paddy field, forest and water bodies were extracted from the objects applying the variation of time-series NDVI. The unclassified objects which were not involved into the previous extraction classified into 6 categories using unsupervised classification by clustering analysis. Finally, the unsuitable paddy field area were assorted from the topographic factors such as elevation and slope. As the results, about 33.6 % of the total area (32313.1 ha) were classified to the paddy field (10847.9 ha) and 851.0 ha was classified to the unsuitable paddy field based on the topographic factors. The user accuracy of paddy field classification was calculated to 83.3 %, and among those, about 60.0 % of total paddy fields were classified from the time-series NDVI before the unsupervised classification. Other land covers were classified as to upland(5255.2 ha), forest (10961.0 ha), residential area and bare land (3309.6 ha), and lake and river (1784.4 ha) from this object-oriented classification.

  • Recently new web trends and mobile technologies are expanding and developing so fast. To improve the implementation efficiency of information systems, eGovernment standard framework has been developed and distributed. Recently, eGovernment standard framework for mobile environment was further developed. In addition, many types of public data produced by public organizations supported by government are being opened through public data portal according to Government 3.0 policy. Demands regarding web standards and common framework usages for mobile application development in most business fields dealing with any types of contents are increasing. However, to link those things to geo-spatial data or integrate those with them are an early stage in the geo-spatial application field, compared to other application fields. Based on these backgrounds, a mobile web application system was designed and implemented to present visualization functionalities of public data and geo-spatial data using HTML5 components under mobile operation environment in eGovernment standard framework in this study. It is expected that this system can be applied to develop many mobile application business models, by the further works such as application of core developing environment in eGovernment standard framework, additional functionalities, and high performance to satisfy with user requirements for a certain target application.

  • As big data are one of main issues in the recent days, the interests on their technologies are also increasing. Among several technological bases, this study focuses on data visualization and R based on open source. In general, the term of data visualization can be summarized as the web technologies for constructing, manipulating and displaying various types of graphic objects in the interactive mode. R is an operating environment or a language for statistical data analysis from basic to advanced level. In this study, a web application with these technological aspects and components is newly implemented and exemplified with data visualization for geo-based open data provided by public organizations or government agencies. This application model does not need users' data building or proprietary software installation. Futhermore it is designed for users in the geo-spatial application field with less experiences and little knowledges about R. The results of data visualization by this application can support decision making process of web users accessible to this service. It is expected that the more practical and various applications with R-based geo-statistical analysis functions and complex operations linked to big data contribute to expanding the scope and the range of the geo-spatial application.
