It has been established that a crack has an important effect on the dynamic behavior of a structure. This effect depends mainly on the location and depth of the crack. To identify the location and depth of a crack in a structure, a method is presented in this paper which uses synthetic artificial intelligent technique, that is, Adaptive-Network-based Fuzzy Inference System(ANFIS) solved via hybrid learning algorithm(the back-propagation gradient descent and the least-squares method) are used to learn the input(the location and depth of a crack)-output(the structural eigenfrequencies) relation of the structural system. With this ANFIS and a continuous evolutionary algorithm(CEA), it is possible to formulate the inverse problem. CEAs based on genetic algorithms work efficiently for continuous search space optimization problems like a parameter identification problem. With this ANFIS, CEAs are used to identify the crack location and depth minimizing the difference from the measured frequencies. We have tried this new idea on a simple beam structure and the results are promising.

Evolutionary Computation is not only widely used in optimization and machine learning, but also being applied in creating novel structures and entities. This paper proposes evolutionary topic maps that can suggest new and creative knowledge not easily producible by humans. Interactive evolutionary computation method is applied into topic maps in order to accept human evaluation on feasibility of intermediate topic maps. Evolutionary topic maps are creativity support tools, helping users to encounter new and creative knowledge. Further work can greatly improve the system by providing more operations, preventing over-convergence, and overcoming user fatigue problem by providing more intuitive user interface, better visualization, and interpolation mechanisms.

Over the past few years, a considerable number of studies have been conducted on modeling the bargaining game using artificial agents on within-model interaction. However, very few attempts have been made at study on between-model interaction. This paper investigates the interaction and co-evolutionary process among heterogeneous artificial agents in the bargaining game. We present two kinds of the artificial agents participating in the bargaining game. They play some bargaining games with their strategies based on genetic algorithm (GA) and reinforcement learning (RL). We compare agents' performance between two agents under various conditions which are the changes of the parameters of artificial agents and the maximal number of round in the bargaining game. Finally, we discuss which agents show better performance and why the results are produced.
Due to the high dimensional problem, typically machine learning algorithms have relied on feature selection techniques in order to perform effective classification in microarray gene expression datasets. However, the large number of features compared to the number of samples makes the task of feature selection computationally inprohibitive and prone to errors. One of traditional feature selection approach was feature filtering; measuring one gene per one step. Then feature filtering was an univariate approach that cannot validate multivariate correlations. In this paper, we proposed a function for measuring both class separability and correlations. With this approach, we solved the problem related to feature filtering approach.
This paper deals with the maximization of the critical buckling load of simply supported antisymmetric angle-ply plates resting on Pasternak foundation subjected to compressive loads using teaching learning based optimization method (TLBO). The first order shear deformation theory is used to obtain governing equations of the laminated plate. In the present optimization problem, the objective function is to maximize the buckling load factor and the design variables are the fibre orientation angles in the layers. Computer programming is developed in the MATLAB environment to estimate optimum stacking sequences of laminated plates. A comparison also has been performed between the TLBO, genetic algorithm (GA) and differential evolution algorithm (DE). Some examples are solved to show the applicability and usefulness of the TLBO for maximizing the buckling load of the plate via finding optimum stacking sequences of the plate. Additionally, the influences of different number of layers, plate aspect ratios, foundation parameters and load ratios on the optimal solutions are investigated.
In the construction of successful fuzzy models and/or controllers for nonlinear systems, the identification of a good fuzzy inference system is an important yet difficult problem, which is traditionally accomplished by a time-consuming trial-and-error process. In this paper, we propose a systematic identification procedure for complex multi-input single-output nonlinear systems with DNA coding method. A DNA coding method is optimization algorithm based on biological DNA as conventional genetic algorithms(GAs) are. The strings in the DNA coding method are variable-length strings, while standard GAs work with a fixed-length coding scheme. the DNA coding method is well suited to learning because it allows a flexible representation of a fuzzy inference system. We also propose a new coding method fur applying the DNA coding method to the identification of fuzzy models. This coding scheme can effectively represent the zero-order Takagi-Sugeno(TS) fuzzy model. To acquire optimal TS fuzzy model with higher accuracy and economical size, we use the DNA coding method to optimize the parameters and the number of fuzzy inference system. In order to demonstrate the superiority and efficiency of the proposed scheme, we finally show its application to a Duffing-forced oscillation system.

Since Internet has been used anywhere, illegal intrusion to a certain host or network become the ciritical factor in security. Although many anomaly detection models have been proposed using the statistical analysis, data mining, genetic algorithm/programming to detect illegal intrusions, these models has defects to detect new types of intrusions. THRE-KBANN (theory-refinement knowledge-based artificial neural network) which can learn continuously based on KBANN, is proposed for the anomaly detection model in this paper. The performance of this model is compared with that of the model based on data mining using the experimental data. The ability of continual learning for the detection of new types of intrusions is also evaluated.

Ecological modeling faces some unique problems in dealing with complex environment-organism relationships, making it one of the toughest domains that might be encountered by a modeler. Newer technologies and ecosystem modeling paradigms have recently been proposed, all as part of a broader effort to reduce the uncertainty in models arising from qualitative and quantitative imperfections in the ecological data. In this paper, evolutionary computation modeling approaches are introduced and proposed as useful modeling tools for ecosystems. The results of our case study support the applicability of an algal predictive model constructed via genetic programming. In conclusion, we propose that evolutionary computation may constitute a powerful tool for the modeling of highly complex objects, such as river ecosystems.
Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a rare ciliopathy generally inherited with an autosomal recessive pattern. BBS is characterized by 6 primary features namely retinal dystrophy, obesity, postaxial polydactyly, renal dysfunction, learning difficulties, and hypogonadism and a wide range of secondary features. To date, mutations in 16 genes have been identified as causative factors for BBS. Among them, the BBS1 and BBS10 genes are major disease-causing genes, and each of these gene mutations presents in more than 20% of all BBS patients. Genotype-phenotype correlations have not been observed in BBS, and there can be phenotypic overlap between BBS and other ciliopathies. In Korea, no molecular, genetically confirmed case of BBS has been reported to date. Herein, we describe the case of the first Korean siblings with BBS resulting from 2 BBS10 gene mutations who showed typical clinical phenotypes, including retinal dystrophy, obesity, intellectual disability, cystic tubular disease, and postaxial polydactyly.
