A Review of Teachers' Pedagogical Content Knowledge and Subject Matter Knowledge for Teaching Earth System Concepts

  • During the last three decades, earth science has been re-conceptualized as an interdisciplinary discipline entitled Earth System Science (ESS), which is based on knowledge of the physical earth system and human impact on the earth. While there is increasing effort to teach earth as a system in K-12 education, teachers' preparedness of to teach earth system is still in its infancy. This article focuses on reviewing the literature of teachers' knowledge of earth systems and of how teachers' knowledge of subject matter affects their teaching practice and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). First, the study investigated a literature of PCK in general as well as in science teaching. Then this study duscuss what teachers' subject matter knowledge (SMK) is and what it means to be in teaching earth system science. Third, a literature of teachers' knowledge of earth system was reviewed. Finally, a number of suggestions and implications are made as to what teacher education program should do to better prepare future teachers to teach earth systems.

Authentic Investigative Activities for Teaching Ratio and Proportion in Elementary and Middle School Mathematics Teacher Education

  • In this study, we created, implemented, and evaluated the impact of proportional reasoning authentic investigative activities on the mathematical content and pedagogical knowledge and attitudes of pre-service elementary and middle school mathematics teachers. For this purpose, a special teaching model was developed, implemented, and tested as part of the pre-service mathematics teacher training programs conducted in Israeli teacher colleges. The model was developed following pilot studies investigating the change in mathematical and pedagogical knowledge of pre- and in-service mathematics teachers, due to experience in authentic proportional reasoning activities. The conclusion of the study is that application of the model, through which the pre-service teachers gain experience and are exposed to authentic proportional reasoning activities with incorporation of theory (reading and analyzing relevant research reports) and practice, leads to a significant positive change in the pre-service teachers' mathematical content and pedagogical knowledge. In addition, improvement occurred in their attitudes and beliefs towards learning and teaching mathematics in general, and ratio and proportion in particular.

  • The article theoretically substantiated, developed and practically implemented a structural and functional model of the formation of ICT competence, taking into account interdisciplinary integration, defines the pedagogical conditions that contribute to the formation of ICT competence: interdisciplinary integration as a basis for building an interdisciplinary course, the content of which is aimed at the formation of ICT competence; the use of IEE, including information, didactic, technological components as a basis for the formation of ICT competence; integration of formal, non-formal and informal education for the implementation the integrity of the acquired knowledge, skills, experience as the basis for the formation of the ICT competence of teachers; creation and use of a set of tasks (educational (UZ), educational and methodological (UMP), educational and professional (UPZ)) as special tools for the formation of ICT competence.

Professional Mobility as a Factor of Professional Success of a Modern Specialist in the Conditions of Distance Learning

  • The article considers the training, competitiveness of specialists, professional mobility, professionalism and competence of specialists in the context of distance learning. The advantages of distance learning are shown. The characteristic features of distance learning in the preparation of students and in the implementation of these technologies in the educational process of higher educational institutions are determined. Competitiveness, professional mobility, professionalism and competence of a specialist are qualities that determine a person's life and work success. Professional mobility is interpreted as a systemic quality of a specialist's personality, which includes a whole range of knowledge, skills, abilities, personal qualities, value orientations, and so on. The vision of mobility of specialists by foreign scientists is presented. It is noted that the classification of professional mobility presented in the article makes it possible to organize various movements from a single position, to present them as separate manifestations of the general process of professional and pedagogical mobility, to determine which type of mobility ensures the performance of certain social functions. It was found that mobility can be differentiated into differentiated and intergeneration. According to the subject, individual and group mobility are distinguished; according to the direction - internal and external. The classification of employees according to their attitude to mobility is shown, which can be divided into the following groups: actually mobile; potentially mobile; actually stable; potentially stable.

교수내용지식을 위한 하이브리드 지식 표현 기법 (A Hybrid Knowledge Representation Method for Pedagogical Content Knowledge)

  • 지능형 교수 시스템(ITS: Intelligent Tutoring System)이 기존의 CAI의 제한적 기능을 극복하고, 내장한 지식베이스에 의해 다양한 학습자들의 변인들을 고려한 개별화된 학습 환경을 제공하지만, 교육현장에는 교수내용지식 표현 방법의 부재와 투자 비용의 비효율성으로 인하여 실제적인 개발물은 전무한 상태이다. 이러한 문제점을 해소하기 위하여 ITS에서의 지식표현 기법과 구축된 지식베이스의 재사용에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 교수내용지식의 특성을 고려하여 본 연구에서는 기존의 신경논리망의 한계점을 해결할 수 있도록 지식의 다중 결합체 구성, 이를 이용한 학습의 맥락 설명을 연구의 대상으로 삼았다. 또한 형성된 지식결합체는 군집화하여 지식베이스 객체로 사용하고, 결합체의 자기 학습에 의해 적응적인 지식베이스 객체로의 성장 가능성을 제고한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 신경논리망의 논리추론, 그리고 인지구조에서 노드의 위상적 불변성을 근거로, 교수내용지식과 객체지향적 개념이 포함된 '확장된 개념의 신경논리망(X-Neuronet: eXtended Neural Logic Network)'을 제안하고, 이 기법에 대한 타당성을 검증하였다. X-Neuronet은 표현의 대상이 되는 지식을 관성과 가변성을 가지는 방향성 결합체로 정의하고, 표현을 위한 기본 개념, 노드의 처리와 연산을 위한 논리연산자, 노드값과 가중치의 결정, 노드활성을 위한 전파 규칙 학습 알고리즘 등을 제공한다.

과학 교사 양성 프로그램의 정합성 및 균형성에 대한 예비 교사 및 현직 교사의 인식 (Preservice and Inservice Science Teachers' Perception on the Coherence and Balance of their Teacher Preparation Programs)

  • 자신이 경험한 교사 양성 프로그램에 대한 과학 교사의 인식을 조사하는 것은 과학 교사가 어떻게 교육되어야 하는가에 대한 개념화에 도움을 준다. 이러한 전제 하에 이 연구에서는 프로그램의 정합성과 균형성에 초점을 맞춰 예비 교사와 현직 교사의 과학 교사 양성 프로그램에 대한 인식을 조사하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 강원도 소재 사범대학의 과학 교사 프로그램을 이수한 20명의 예비 교사와 39명의 현직 교사가 참여 하였으며, 선택형 및 개방형 설문지를 개발하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다; 첫째, 과학 교사 양성 프로그램의 정합성에 대해 예비 교사와 현직 교사는 '보통' 정도로 인식하는 것으로 나타났으며, '수업 계획 및 준비' 범주에서 가장 정합성이 높은 것으로, '직업적 책무' 범주에서 가장 정합성이 낮은 것으로 인식하였다. 또한, 4개 범주 모두에서 예비 교사에 비해 현직 교사가 프로그램의 정합성을 더 낮게 인식하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 과학 교사 양성 프로그램의 균형성에 대해 예비 교사와 현직 교사는 모두 이론적 요소에 비해 실천적 요소가 부족한 것으로 인식하고 있었다. 셋째, 현행 과학 교사 양성 프로그램이 임용 고사를 위한 교육과정으로서의 성격이 강하다고 인식하고 있었으며, 프로그램의 4개 영역(교과내용학, 교과교육학, 일반교육학, 교생실습)이 학교 현장과 보다 더 연계되어야 한다고 인식하였다. 이 연구 결과를 토대로 보다 정합적이고 균형적인 과학 교사 양성 프로그램을 위한 대안적 방법을 논의하였다.

예비수학교사의 '내용과 학습자에 대한 지식(KCS)' 탐색 연구 (An Investigation into the Pre-Service Mathematics Teachers' Knowledge of Content and Students)

  • 교수학적 내용 지식(PCK)은 수학교육학 분야에서 다각도로 활발하게 탐구되어온 주제이다. 본 연구는 PCK의 구성 요소 중의 하나인 '내용과 학습자에 대한 지식(KCS)'에 주목하고, 예비수학교사들의 KCS를 파악하기 위하여 사범대학 수학교육과 재학생 30명을 대상으로 반구조화된 심층면담을 실시하였다. 심층면담은 예비교사들로부터 다양한 답변을 기대할 수 있는 내용을 자유응답형으로 구성하였으며, 네 가지 질문에 대한 예비교사들의 답변을 기술하고 유형화함으로써 연구 문제로 설정한 학습자의 전형적인 오류, 학습자의 내용 이해, 학습자의 발달 계열에 대한 예비교사들의 사고를 파악하고자 하였다. 심층면담 결과, 예비교사들은 설문에 대한 응답에서 수학적 관점 혹은 교육적 관점을 갈등적으로 적용하고 있었다. 학교수학을 구성하고 있는 개념 중 여러 학교급과 학년 혹은 여러 영역에서 중층적으로 설명되는 경우에 대해서는 교사양성 과정에서 각 주제들이 학교급과 학년을 관통하여 어떻게 다루어지는지 종적으로 조망할 필요가 있을 것이다.

연어능력이 대학생들의 영어능숙도와 영작문 능력에 미치는 영향 (The effects of collocational competence on college students' English proficiency and writing abilities)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate knowledge and use of English collocations in their relation to Korean college students' general English proficiency and writing abilities. Participants in the present study were 203 Korean college students. Their knowledge and use of English collocations were measured by a self-designed collocation test and an essay writing test. The findings were as follows: First, there was a significant difference in students' knowledge of collocations according to their general English proficiency. Students' performance in the collocation test increased as their level of proficiency increased. Second, there was a significant difference in students' knowledge of collocations according to their writing abilities. Students showed better performance in the collocation test as their level of writing abilities increased. Third, there was a significant difference in students' use of collocations according to their writing abilities. Students' collocation use in the writing test increased as their level of writing abilities increased. Fourth, there was a strong relationship between the students' knowledge of collocations and their general English proficiency and between the students' use of collocations and their writing abilities. Pedagogical implications of the study and suggestions for further research were discussed on the basis of the research findings.

공과대학 교수학습의 질적 향상을 위한 공학 교수자의 교수지향 탐색 (Exploration of Engineering Professors' Teaching Orientations toward Engineering Courses)

  • Teaching orientations represent teachers' general way of conceptualizing their teaching. The orientations are regarded as a very important factor in developing teachers' pedagogical content knowledge because they often guide their instructional decisions such as the selection of contents and teaching strategies, the use of curricula materials, and the evaluation of learning. Thus, understanding teachers' orientations can provide meaningful suggestions to understand their instructional approaches and furthermore to enhance the quality of engineering education in college. The research question for this present study was what kinds of teaching orientations engineering professors possessed in teaching engineering courses and how the orientations were represented in their teaching. Six engineering professors, particularly interested in instructional approaches, participated in the research. The data sources included in-depth interviews with individual professors, classroom observations with field notes, and related documents. In results, four teaching orientations toward engineering courses were identified: 1) expert knowledge in engineering, 2) engineering practice, 3) social practice, and 4) interdisciplinary design. Individual professors had between one to three different teaching orientations. Even though the professors had similar orientations but their instructional strategies somewhat varied based on the disciplines.

Development of an Information System for Accounting for the Level of Training of Future Specialists in the Field of Information Technology

  • The article is devoted to the design and development of an information system for preserving the results of testing to verify the residual knowledge of students of the resource for training specialists in information and communication technologies. The purpose of the study is to provide a scientific justification for the problem of developing professional training of specialists in information and communication technologies in the process of using an information system to save test results to verify students' residual knowledge and to verify the effectiveness of its implementation in universities. According to the results of the experiment, it can be argued that the introduction of an information system to preserve the results of testing to test students' residual knowledge in the educational process contributes to the professional training of specialists in information and communication technologies at the universities of Ukraine. The practice of development and use of modern information technologies focused on the implementation of psychological and pedagogical goals of teaching and education is fundamentally new mediated by modern technical and technological innovations.
