The purpose of this paper is to present a model for operating an emergency power system(EPS) that can secure a sufficient power supply used in case of a fire by analyzing the status of power supplies for emergency and firefighting operations. Investigations on the one of the causes of the operational failure of firefighting systems show evidence of EPS. Generally, when power to a building is interrupted, EPS supplies the emergency load(excepted firefighting load) first. When a power outage and a fire occur simultaneously, the EPS must be able to supply both the emergency load and the firefighting load, especially the firefighting load to the end. However, in order to save construction costs, emergency power generators in apartment, commercial, and business buildings can satisfy only one of the required loads. In cases like this, when a power outage and a fire occur simultaneously, there is a danger of firefighting equipment not operating due to insufficient power supply from the emergency generator. Therefore, an EPS must have a reserved firefighting power that can supply both the firefighting and the emergency load. Such EPS, when faced with a danger of an overload, will shut down the supply to all or part of the emergency load, thus securing a continuous power supply to the firefighting equipment. The generator power system with reserved firefighting power (RFP) will also have an indicator to show that the selective control is being used. General power generation systems for emergency load and firefighting load were found to have a demand factor of 50-60% with a lump. However, when installing an EPS, the builders must choose the higher demand factor suggested according to the official approval demand factor of the building.
Although it is possible to provide statistically reliable estimators of the entire population parameters based on each independent rolling sample, estimators of the small areas may not have the required statistical efficiency. Thus, in general, small area estimators are calculated based on the combined rolling sample after entire rolling sample survey is finished. In this study, we considered the construction of weights that is necessary in the analysis of the combined rolling sample. Unlike the past studies that provided the empirical results for the corresponding specific rolling sample survey, we considered linear models that depends only on design variables and rolling period and provided the corresponding Best Linear Unbiased Predictor(BLUP). Through a simulation study, we proposed the estimators for the population parameters that are robust to model failure and the BLUP under the assumed model. The results are applied to the 4th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Objectives : To develop a model that will predict the mortality of patients undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) and evaluate the perfermance of hospitals. Methods : Data from 564 CABGs peformed in six general hospitals were collected through medical record abstraction by registered nurses. Variables studied involved risk factors determined by severity measures. Risk modeling was performed through logistic repression and validated with cross-validation. The statistical performance of the developed model was evaluated using c-statistic, $R^2$, and Hosmer-Lemeshow statistic. Hospital performance was assessed by severity-adjusted mortalities. Results : The developed model included age, sex, BUN, EKG rhythm, Congestive Heart Failure at admission. acute mental change within 24 hours, and previous angina pectoris history. The c-statistic and $R^2$ were 0.791 and 0.001, respectively. Hosmer-Lemeshow statistic was 10.3(p value=0.2415). One hospital had a significantly higher mortality rate than the average mortality rate, while others were net significantly different. Conclusion : Comparing the quality of service by severity adjusted mortality rates, there were significant differences in hospital performance. The severity adjusted mortality rate of CABG surgery may He an indicator for evaluating hospital performance in Korea.

The software reliability growth model(SRGM) has been developed in order to estimate such reliability measures as remaining fault number, failure rate and reliability for the developing stage software. Almost of them assumed that the faults detected during testing were evetually removed. Namely, they have studied SRGM based on the assumption that the faults detected during testing were perfectly removed. The fault removing efficiency. however. IS imperfect and it is widely known as so in general. It is very difficult to remove detected fault perfectly because the fault detecting is not easy and new error may be introduced during debugging and correcting. Therefore, the fault detecting efficiency may influence the SRGM or cost of developing software. It is a very useful measure for the developing software. much helpful for the developer to evaluate the debugging efficiency, and, moreover, help to additional workloads necessary. Therefore. it is very important to evaluate the effect of imperfect dubugging in point of SRGM and cost. and may influence the optimal release time and operational budget. I extent and study the generally used reliability and cost models to the imperfect debugging range in this paper.
The punching shear strength of concrete flat plates is one of the topics of intensive research in recent years by various concrete structures researchers. This paper reviews four current methods of analysing the punching shear strength at the corner-and edge-column positions of reinforced concrete flat plates. They include those recommended in the Australian Standard AS3600-1988, the American Concrete Institute ACI318-89 and the British Standard on Concrete Practices (BS8110) as well as the approach developed at the University of Wollongong, Australia. Based on half-scale model test results, a comparative study of these four analysis methods is made with regard to their limitation, accuracy and reliability. It is found that the Wollongong approach in general gives the best performance in predicting the punching shear strength of flat plates with torsion strips and those with spandrel beams. The Australian Standard procedure performs just as satisfactorily for flat plates with torsion strips but tends to be unsafe for those with spandrel beams. Both the ACI and the British methods are applicable only to flat plates with torsion strips; they also tend to give unsafe predictions for the punching shear strength.

We study a manufacturing process that is quite common in semiconductor wafer fabrication of semiconductor chip production. A machine is used to process a job consisting of J wafers. Each job requires a setup, and the i$_{th}$ setup for a job is sucessful with probability P$_{i}$. The setup is prone to failure, which results in the loss of expensive wafers. Therefore, a tiral run is first conducted on a small batch. If the set up is successful, the test is passed and the balance of the job can be processed. If the setup is unsuccessful, the exposed wafers are lost to scrap and the mask is realigned. The process then repeats on the balance of the job. We call this as send-ahead policy and consider general policies in which the number of wafers that are sent shead depend on the cost of the raw wafer, the sequence of success probabilities, and the balance of the job. We model this process and determine the expected number of good wafers per job,the expected time to process a job, and the long run average throughput. An algorithm to minimize the cost per good wafer subject to a demand constraint is provided.d.d.

SIL-based optical disk drive will be promising candidate of next-generation storage devices. However, a near-field optical disk drive requires the robustness to external shock because of extremely small gap between SIL and media. Especially, high-level shock damages permanently to SIL and it makes difficulties in general application. To study the likelihood of failure, the shock analysis must be performed over all others. This research explores the dynamic characteristics of rotating disk through FEM which is compared to analytical solution and experimental modal analysis. We also develop the finite element model of an optical disk drive, which includes rubber mounts, sled base, rotating disk and pickup assembly, and simulate the shock response.
Dams are important structures for management of water supply for irrigation or drinking, flood control, and electricity generation. In seismic regions, the structural safety of concrete gravity dams is important due to the high potential of life and economic loss if they fail. Therefore, the seismic analysis of existing dams in seismically active regions is crucial for predicting responses of dams to ground motions. In this paper, earthquake response of concrete gravity dams is investigated using the finite element (FE) method. The FE model accounts for dam-water-foundation rock interaction by considering compressible water, flexible foundation effects, and absorptive reservoir bottom materials. Several uncertainties regarding structural attributes of the dam and external actions are considered to obtain the fragility curves of the dam-water-foundation rock system. The structural uncertainties are sampled using the Latin Hypercube Sampling method. The Pine Flat Dam in the Central Valley of Fresno County, California, is selected to demonstrate the methodology for several limit states. The fragility curves for base sliding, and excessive deformation limit states are obtained by performing non-linear time history analyses. Tensile cracking including the complex state of stress that occurs in dams was also considered. Normal, Log-Normal and Weibull distribution types are considered as possible fits for fragility curves. It was found that the effect of the minimum principal stress on tensile strength is insignificant. It is also found that the probability of failure of tensile cracking is higher than that for base sliding of the dam. Furthermore, the loss of reservoir control is unlikely for a moderate earthquake.
Experimental studies on the behaviors of box-shape steel reinforced concrete (SRC) composite beams were conducted. Seven 1:3 scale model composite beams were tested to failure. Each of the beams was simply supported at the ends and two concentrated loads were applied at the one-third span and two-thirds span respectively. Experimental results indicate that the flexural strength can be enhanced when the ratio of flexural reinforcements and flange thickness of the shape steel are increased; the shear strength is enhanced with increase of web thickness of the shape steel. Insignificant effects of concrete in the box-shape steel are found on improving the flexural strength and shear strength of the box-shape SRC composite beams, thus concrete inside the box-shape steel can be saved, and the weight of the SRC beams can be decreased. Shear studs can strengthen the connection and co-work effects between the shape steel and the concrete and enhance the shear strength, but stud design for the composite beams should be further improved. Formulas for flexural and shear strength of the composite beams are proposed, and the calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental results. In general, the box-shape SRC composite beam is a kind of ductile member, and suitable for extensive engineering application.
JK wall is a shear wall made of lightweight EPS mortar and reinforced with a 3-D galvanized steel mesh, called JK panel, and truss-like stiffeners, called JK stiffeners. Earlier studies have shown that low strength lightweight concrete has the potential to be used in structural elements. In this study, seismic contribution of the JK infill walls surrounded by steel frames is numerically investigated. Adopting a hybrid numerical model, behavior envelop of the wall is derived from the general purpose finite element software, Abaqus. Obtained backbone would be implemented in the professional analytical software, SAP2000, in which through calibrated hysteretic parameters, cyclic behavior of the JK infill can be simulated. Through comparison with earlier experimental results, it turned out that the proposed hybrid modeling can simulate monotonic and cyclic behavior of JK walls with good accuracy. JK infills have a panel-type configuration which their dominant failure mode would be ductile in flexure. Finally technical and economical advantages of the proposed JK infills are assessed for two representative multistory buildings. It is revealed that JK infills can reduce maximum inter-story drifts as well as residual drifts at the expense of minor increase in the developed base shear.
