  • In this paper, the problem of determining the probability of kill(or survival) of a vulnerable target by one or more missiles is considered. The general formulas are obtained for the kill or survival probability the target is killed or survival. Several well-known concepts such as those of vulnerability, lethality, multi-component target, and a general combinatorial theorem of probability are introduced and used. For the convenience in this paper, the word missile is used in a very general sense and the target is generally taken to be a point target. And, this paper, is concentrated primarily with the probabilistic aspects of the problem, also a general numerical procedures are also described. Two examples are shown to illustrate the use of some of the formulas in this study, but also illustrate a few points which may not have been sufficiently emphasized. The extension study to complete a software package will be followed.

  • Resident training programs in South Korea lag far behind that of advanced countries. Given the problems the current system in South Korea has, it is time to consider a new resident training system, resident training for general competencies. Training for the general competencies was practiced in medical fields in advanced countries such as the USA, Canada, and the UK as early as 20 years ago. This system has rendered itself a key component of resident training. Although a few theoretical procedures on general competencies have been practiced in South Korea, the awareness of this concept is still very weak, and the application of the theory to actual training is a long way off from becoming effective. It is urgent for South Korea to adopt competency- and outcome-based training for general competencies. To this end, the knowledge of the concept of this type of training should be improved. Also, the system should be carefully designed to cover a doctor's whole career, and be applied immediately. The competency- and outcome-based training for general competencies is a system that assures high level qualifications. It reflects the needs of our society under the recognition that a professional organization should be committed and accountable in order to respond to social demands. As the benefits of the new training system reach the public and medical care consumers, training-related expenses should be borne by social costs.

  • Our aims were to evaluate the clinical performance of human telomerase RNA gene component (hTERC gene) amplification assay with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) DNA test of Hybrid Capture 2 DNA test (HC2), for the detection of high grade cervical precancerous lesions and cancer (CIN 2+). In addition, the association shown between hTERC gene amplification and HPV DNA test positive in women with and without cervical neoplasia was assessed. There were 92 women who underwent cytology, HR-HPV DNA test, hTERC gene amplification test, colposcopy and biopsy. We compared the clinical performance of hTERC gene test along with HR-HPV DNA test of women with colposcopy and routine screening. The samples were histology-confirmed high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN 2) or worse (CIN2+) as the positive criterion. The test of hTERC gene showed the hTERC gene amplification positivity increased with the severity of histological abnormality and cytological abnormality. The test of hTERC gene showed higher specificity than HR-HPV DNA test for high-grade lesions (84.4% versus 50%) and also higher positive predictive value (90.4% versus 76.5%). Our results predicted that hTERC gene amplification demonstrated more specific performance for predicting the risk of progression and offer a strong potential as a tool for triage in cervical cancer screening, with the limited sensitive as HR-HPV DNA test.

  • Analysis of the characteristics and the grouping of the species of sown and weeds in artificial pastures was studied applying the principal component analysis method. Presency and coverage of six sown species and fifteen weed species which occurred in pastures of under-grazing and optimumgrazing were subject to analysis. From field survey, species were divided into three groups: the group A included five species such as Festuca arundinacea, Lolium perenne and Dactylis glomerata, etc., the group B included eleven species such as Polygonum longisetum, Agrostis alba and Rumex obtusifolius, etc., and the group C included five species such as Miscanthus sinensis, Rubus palmatus and Artemisia princeps, etc. The group A species corresponded to good pasture conditions and management. On the contrary, the group C species occurred in poor pasture conditions with inadequate management. The group B species corresponded to intermediate pasture conditions and management. Interrelated pair species co-existing and species non-co-existing were discovered. Factor loading as negative for the group A species. positive for the group C species and positive but lower than the group C species for the group B species. From these results it is concluded that the principal component analysis seems to one of the useful tools for the analysis of characteristics of species and the diagnosis of sown pasture vegetation, although further studies are required to get more general information about species characteristics.

  • In this paper we propose effective speech recognizer through two recognition experiments. In general, SVM is classification method which classify two class set by finding voluntary nonlinear boundary in vector space and possesses high classification performance under few training data number. In this paper we compare recognition performance of HMM and SVM at training data number and investigate recognition performance of each feature parameter while changing feature space of MFCC using Independent Component Analysis(ICA) and Principal Component Analysis(PCA). As a result of experiment, recognition performance of SVM is better than 1:.um under few training data number, and feature parameter by ICA showed the highest recognition performance because of superior linear classification.

  • In this study, a statistical investigation was carried out for the evaluation of any relationship between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHss) associated with ambient aerosols and other air quality parameters under varying meteorological conditions. Daily measurements for PAHs and air quality/meteorological parameters were selected from a data-base constructed by a comprehensive air monitoring in London during 1985-1987. Correlation coefficients were calculated to examine any significant relationship between the PAHs and other individual variables. Statistical analysis was further Performed for the air quality/meteorological data set using a principal component analysis to derive important factors inherent in the interactions among the variables. A total of six components were identified, representing vehicle emission, photochemical activity/volatilization, space heating, atmospheric humidity, atmospheric stability, and wet deposition. It was found from a stepwise multiple regression analysis that the vehicle emission component is overall the most important factor contributing to the variability of PAHs concentrations at the monitoring site. The photochemical activity/volatilzation component appeared to be also an important factor particularly for the lower molecular weight PAHs. In general, the space heating component was found to be next important factor, while the contributions of other three components to the variance of each PAHs did not appear to be as much important as the first three components in most cases. However, a consistency for these components in their negative correlations with PAHs data was found, indicating their roles in the depletion of PAHs concentrations in the urban atmosphere.

  • In this paper, we investigate how the power consumption of a heat pump dryer depends on various factors in the drying process by analyzing variables that affect the power consumption. Since there are in general many variables that affect the power consumption, for a feasible analysis, we utilize the principal component analysis to reduce the number of variables (or dimensionality) to two or three. We find that the first component is correlated positively to the entrance temperature of various devices such as compressor, expander, evaporator, and the second, negatively to condenser. We then model the power consumption as a multiple regression with two and/or three transformed variables of the selected principal components. We find that fitted value from the multiple regression explains 80~90% of the observed value of the power consumption. This results can be applied to a more elaborate control of the power consumption in the heat pump dryer.

  • In this paper, we constructs face database by using wavelet comparison, and compare face recognition rate by using principle component analysis (Principal Component Analysis : PCA) algorithm. General face recognition method constructs database, and do face recognition by using normalized size. Proposed method changes image of normalized size (92${\times}$112) to 1 step, 2 step, 3 steps to wavelet compression and construct database. Input image did compression by wavelet and a face recognition experiment by PCA algorithm. As well as method that is proposed through an experiment reduces existing face image's information, the processing speed improved. Also, original image of proposed method showed recognition rate about 99.05%, 1 step 99.05%, 2 step 98.93%, 3 steps 98.54%, and showed that is possible to do face recognition constructing face database of large quantity.
