  • The purpose of this study is to assess approaches to modeling coal gasification and combustion in general purpose CFD codes. Coal gasification and combustion involve complex multiphase flows and chemical reactions with strong influences of turbulence and radiation. CFD codes would treat coal particles as a discrete phase and gas species are considered as a continuous phase. An approach to modeling coal reaction in $FLUENT^{(R)}$, selected in this study as a typical commercial CFD code, was evaluated including its devolatilization, gas phase reactions, and char oxidation, turbulence, and radiation submodels. CFD studies in the literature were reviewed to show the uncertainties and limitations of the results. Therefore, the CFD analysis gives useful information, but the results should be carefully interpreted based on understandings on the uncertainties associated with the modelings of coal gasification and combustion.

  • This study describes aerodynamic characteristics for the HAWT (Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine) rotor blade using general CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) code. The boundary conditions for analysis are validated with the experimental result by the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory)/NASA Ames wind tunnel test for S809 airfoil. In the case of wind turbine rotor blade, complex phenomena are appeared such as flow separation and re-attachment. Those are handled by using a commercial flow analysis tool. The 2-equation k-$\omega$ SST turbulence model and transition model appear to be well suited for the prediction. The 3-dimensional phenomena in the HAWT rotor blade is simulated by a commercial 3-D aerodynamic analysis tool. Tip vortex geometry and Radial direction flows along the blade are checked by the analysis.

  • In the present study a pre/post-processor program has been developed to be used with a general CFD code. This program is capable of performing the basic functions of the pre/post-processing, which include mesh generation and post processing plots. Also through perspective projection, this program can be used to check the quality of generated mesh by moving around inside the mesh. The smoke visualization can be also performed with the present program to visualize the smoke behavior in the case of fire simulation. The examples of the program execution are given in paper.

  • To calculate the fluid-structure interaction(FSI) problem rationally, it should be the basic technology to analyse each domain of fluid and structure accurately. In this paper, a new FSI analysis algorithm was introduced using the 3D solid finite element for structural analysis and CFD code based on the HCIB method for viscous flow analysis. The fluid and structural domain were analysed successively and alternatively in time domain. The structural domain was analysed by the Newmark-b direct time integration scheme using the pressure field calculated by the CFD code. The results for example calculation were compared with other research and it was shown that those coincided each other. So we can conclude that the developed algorithm can be applied to the general FSI problems.

  • This paper presents the transient performance analysis of a micro-hydro Pelton turbine for the osmotic power generation using the commercially available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, ANSYS CFX. The detailed flow field in the micro Pelton turbine with a single-jet is investigated by the CFD code adopted in the present study. Predicted characteristic curves agree fairly well with measured data for a prototype Pelton turbine over the normal operating conditions. The computational analysis method presented herein can be effectively applied to the hydraulic design optimization process of general purpose Pelton turbine runners.

  • NUFLEX is a general purpose program for the analysis 3D thermo/fluid flow and pre/post processor in a complex geometry. NUFLEX is composed of various physical models, such as phase change(solidification/melting) and spray, MHD(Magneto Hydraulic Dynamics) models. It is possible to simulate continuous cast iron process and spray droplet breakup/collision phenomenon. For the verification of these models, compared with the experimental data and commercial CFD code's results. The results show good agreements with experimental and comercial CFD codes's results.

  • Vortex and swirl occurring in a pump suction intake sump normally reduce the performance and disturb the safe operation of the circulation water pump in thermal power plants. This paper presents a case study of one particular intake sump design via a CFD analysis and a hydraulic model testing. The physical experiments and numerical analysis were performed under two flow and three level variation conditions. The vortex patterns around the pump suction pipe have been predicted by a commercial CFD code with the k-${\varepsilon}$ model. The model tests were conducted on a 1/10 model for a practical intake sump. The location, number and general pattern of the free surface vortex and submerged vortex predicted by CFD simulation were found to be a good agreement with those observed in the model testing.

  • Owing to the rapid progress in manufacturing technology of microscale devices, there are active research works in developing microscale propulsion systems. In this study, gas flows in nozzles with size of milli and sub-millimeter are investigated by using a CFD code based on the Navier-Stokes equations. The prediction results were compared with theoretical results of quasi-one-dimensional nozzle flow and experiment data. In general, theoretical values agree very well with the CFD results. However, theoretical values begin to deviate from the CFD and experimental data for relatively small Reynolds numbers and the nozzle shape with rectangular cross section. The primary reason for this discrepancy is due to the existence of the thick boundary layer at the wall in low Reynolds flows.

  • Effective mixing gives strong advantageous impact on microfluidic applications since mixing is in general very slow process motivated by molecular diffusion transport only on the micro-scale. In this work, the mixing characteristics are analyzed in a Y-channel micromixer with obstacles. For the through analysis, our laboratory in-house unstructured grid CFD code is validated through solving a concentration transport in a uniform microchannel. The solutions well correspond to both exact solutions and those from MemCFD. Mixing in a Y-channel micromixer with obstacles is numerically investigated by the in-house code to search the optimal radius and layout of obstacles. From the simulations, the mixing efficiency appears to be proportional to the magnitude of the formation of lateral velocity component. It is also shown that the asymmetric layout and radius enlargement of obstacles greatly improves mixing efficiency.
