In order to extend the shelf life of refrigerating raw lamb by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms, preventing the oxidation of fat and protein, and absorbing the juice outflow of lamb during storage, an active packaging system based on plastic/gelatin bilayer film with essential oil was developed in this study. Three kinds of petroleum-derived plastic films, oriented polypropylene (OPP), polyethylene terephthalate, and polyethylene, were coated with gelatin to make bilayer films for lamb preservation. The results showed significant improvement in the mechanical properties, oxygen, moisture, and light barriers of the bilayer films compared to the gelatin film. The OPP/gelatin bilayer film was selected for further experiments because of its highest acceptance by panelists. If the amount of juice outflow was less than 350% of the mass of the gelatin layer, it was difficult for the gelatin film to separate from lamb. With the increase in essential oil concentration, the water absorption capacity decreased. The OPP/gelatin bilayer films with 20% mustard or 10% oregano essential oils inhibited the growth of bacteria in lamb and displayed better mechanical properties. Essential oil decreased the brightness and light transmittance of the bilayer films and made the film yellow. In conclusion, our results suggested that the active packaging system based on OPP/gelatin bilayer film was more suitable for raw lamb preservation than single-layer gelatin film or petroleum-derived plastic film, but need further study, including minimizing the amount of essential oil, enhancing the mechanical strength of the gelatin film after water absorption.
The gelatin film containing grapefruit seed extract (GSE) was prepared by incorporating different amounts (0, 0.02, 0.05, 0.08, 0.1%) of GSE into the film. The tensile strength (TS) of the film increased by the addition of GSE, and water vapor permeability (WVP) of the film decreased. In particular, the gelatin film containing 0.1% GSE had a TS of 10.28 MPa, while the control had 8.68 MPa. WVP of the film containing 0.1% GSE decreased to 2.18 ng m/m2 s Pa, compared to 2.48 ng $m/m^{2}s$ Pa of the control. In addition, incorporation of 0.1% GSE to the gelatin film decreased the populations of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes by 2.67 and 3.15 log CFU/g, respectively, compared to the control. These results suggest that as a packaging material, gelatin film containing GSE can have antimicrobial activity against pathogenic microorganisms in foods.
Edible films of gelatin and com zein were prepared by incorporating nisin to the film-forming solutions. Com zein film with nisin of 12,000 IU/ml had an increase of 11.6 MPa in tensile strength compared with the control, whereas gelatin film had a slight increase with the increase of nisin concentration added. Water vapor permeability for both com zein and gelatin films decreased with the increase of nisin concentration, thus providing a better barrier against water. Antimicrobial activity against Listeria monocytogenes increased with the increase of nisin concentration, resulting in 1.4 log cycle reduction for com zein film and 0.6 log cycle reduction for gelatin film at 12,000 IU/ml. These results suggest that incorporation of nisin into com zein and gelatin films improve the physical properties of the films as well as antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria during storage, resulting in extension of the shelf life of food products by providing with antimicrobial edible packaging films.
We investigated the surface modification method for the preparation of organic-inorganic hybrid composite thin film. Gelatin obtained from the decomposition of collagen was allowed to adsorb in a polystyrene tissue culture dish for 2 h to from layers of gelatin. Supersaturated ionic solution of calcium and phosphorus was injected on the gelatin adsorbed layer to form calcium phosphate thin film. During the initial period of incubation, nucleates were formed. With increase of the incubation time, CaP (calcium phosphate) thin film grew on the surface of the culture dish. The gelatin/CaP thin film displayed the highly porous three-dimensional surface structure. Attenuated, total reflectance Fourier transform, infra-red spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) was used to analyze the chemical properties of CaP film. The analysis demonstrated that the CaP film formed at initial period of treatment appeared to be amorphous. With increase of incubation time, the crystallinity of the film was slightly increased, but the presence of the peaks for the low crystalline CaP confirmed that the CaP thin film prepared in this study was poorly crystallized.

Sea urchin skeleton (SUS) generated from production of sea urchin eggs was used as a biodegradable film base material, and its composite film with gelatin was prepared. In addition, Robinia pseudoacacia flower extract (RFE) was incorporated into the film-forming solution to provide antioxidant and anti-microbial activities. The tensile strength (TS) of the SUS/gelatin composite films increased with increasing gelatin content, whereas elongation at break (E) decreased. Among the composite films, SUS/gelatin film at a ratio of 8:2 (w/w) exhibited the most desirable TS and E values. Furthermore, SUS composite film containing RFE showed a reduced TS and increased E compared to the control film. Based on 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assays and disc diffusion results against growth of Listeria monocytogenes, antioxidant and anti-microbial activities of films increased with increasing RFE concentration. Consequently, SUS composite film containing RFE showed proper physical properties as well as antioxidant and anti-microbial activities. These results indicate that SUS can be used as a film base material while the SUS composite film containing RFE can be utilized as active packaging.

Defatted grape seed meal protein (DGP) was extracted, and DGP films containing various plasticizers were prepared. To improve the mechanical properties of DGP film, nanoclay or gelatin was incorporated in the film-forming solution to manufacture DGP composite films. Among the plasticizers of fructose (FRU), sucrose (SUC), and polypropylene glycol (PPG), DGP film containing a SUC : PPG ratio of 2.5:0.5 exhibited the best film-forming ability. Addition of Cloisite $Na^+$ improved the mechanical properties of DGP film. Tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (E) of the film containing 5% Cloisite $Na^+$ were 1.45 MPa and 71.97%, respectively. Regarding the DGP/gelatin composite films, TS and water vapor permeability (WVP) increased with increasing gelatin amount, whereas E decreased. In particular, the DGP/gelatin (2:2) composite film exhibited 20.95 MPa TS and 12.25% E. These results suggest that the DGP film prepared from defatted grape seed meal can be used as a food packaging material.
Agfa 8E75 HD film is used to fabricate a film-type dichromated gelatin holographic combiner. The swelling factor of gelatin is controlled to increase the refractive-index modulation of hologram during the pre-processing steps. The characteristics of the reconstructed wavelength and the angular bandwidth are compared with those obtained with Kodak 649F plate.
This study illustrates the synthesis of gelatin based zinc oxide nanoparticle (ZnONPs) incorporated nanocomposite films using different concentrations of ZnONPs. The ZnONPs were oval in shape and the size ranged from 100- 200 nm. The nanocomposite films were characterized by UV-visible, FE-SEM, FT-IR, and XRD. The concentrations of ZnONPs greatly influenced the properties of nanocomposite films. The absorption peaks around 360 nm increased with the increasing concentrations of ZnONPs. The surface color of film did not change while transmittance at 280 nm was greatly reduced with increase in the concentration of ZnONPs. FTIR spectra showed the interaction of ZnONPs with gelatin. XRD data demonstrated the crystalline nature of ZnONPs. The thermostability, char content, water contact angle, water vapor permeability, moisture content, and elongation at break of nanocomposite films increased, whereas, tensile strength and modulus decreased with increase in the concentrations of ZnONPs. The gelatin/ZnONPs nanocomposite films showed profound antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative food-borne pathogenic bacteria. The gelatin/$ZnONP^{1.5}$ nanocomposite film showed the best UV barrier and antimicrobial properties among the tested-films, which indicated a high potential for use as an active food packaging films with environmentally-friendly nature.
The objectives of this research were to improve the film-forming properties of Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus skin gelatin (CSG) by cross-linking with transglutaminase (TG), determine and optimize the TG reaction time, and characterize the mechanical and barrier properties of CSG edible film. Cross-linking of CSG was performed by TG for 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 min at $50^{\circ}C$, and the reaction was confirmed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The color and mechanical and barrier properties of edible films fabricated with CSG cross-linked with TG were characterized. Gelatin yields from the extraction ranged from 18.2% to 23.3%. SDS-PAGE exhibited dark bands at 120 and 250 kDa, indicating successful TG-mediated cross-linking. The color of CSG film was not affected by TG cross-linking. The tensile strength of CSG films cross-linked with TG decreased from 42.59 to 21.73 MPa and the percent elongation increased from 42.92% to 76.96% as reaction times increased from 0 to 40 min. There was no significant difference in water vapor permeability of CSG films.
In this paper, we describe a study on the relationship between photographic emulsion manufacture and hardening test of films. The hardeners were prepared by condensation of equimolar amounts of trichlorotriazine with benzene- or naphthalene-based amino or oxy acids at 0 to 5$^{\circ}C$ and at pH 7, and used as hardening agents for gelatin. The hardening test of photographic emulsion was studied at pH 5.5. For example I(R=ONa) had strong hardening properties, I substituted with an aminobenzosulfonate moiety (R=$NHC_6H_4-p-SO_3Me$ where Me = K, Na) was a much weaker gelatin hardener, and when substituted with amino- or oxynaphthalene derivative (II, III) did not harden gelatin at all. Compound with 2 dichlorotriazine groups as IV exhibited strong hardening properties. The hardener can be used in photographic emulsion of film and showed very good hardening effect.
