Modern vehicles require a high degree of refinement, including good driveability to meet customer demands. Vehicle driveability, which becomes a key decisive factor for marketability, is affected by many parameters such as engine control and the dynamic characteristics in drive lines. Therefore, Engine and drive train characteristics should be considered to achieve a well balanced vehicle response simultaneously. This paper describes analysis procedures using a mathematical model which has been developed to simulate spark timing control logic. Inertia mass moment, stiffness and damping coefficient of engine and drive train were simulated to analyze the effect of parameters which were related vehicle dynamic behavior. Inertia mass moment of engine and stiffness of drive line were shown key factors for the shuffle characteristics. It was found that torque increase rate, torque reduction rate and torque recovery timing and rate influenced the shuffle characteristics at the tip-in condition for the given system in this study.
The vibration signals of driving parts of electric train are distorted its signal patterns due to the impact components, which occurs when wheel passes rail joints. An elimination method of the impact components is investigated using adaptive signal processing technique in this study. The result shows that adaptive interference canceling method seems to be more effective than line enhancement technique. The application of adaptive interference canceling method to the signal measured at bogie shows that the extractions of the signals of driving parts of traction motor, reduction gear, and axle bearing are successful. Therefore, only the signals of bogie, which is the place to attach an accelerometer easily, is sufficient for the fault diagnosis and the safety evaluation of electric train. Also, adaptive interference canceling method can be applicable to evaluate the performance of vibration isolation between bogie and car body and to investigate the characteristics of indoor sound.

An overhung mounted carrier with flexible pins is applied to the planetary gear train of a wind turbine gearbox to investigate the influence of the self-aligning effect by means of the deflection of the planet spindle and the flexible pin on the lifetime of the planet gear for a wind turbine gearbox. To analyze the load distribution of planet gears, both Euler theory and commercial software are employed. By applying an overhung mounted carrier with flexible pins in the wind turbine gearbox, we can improve the misalignment performance, face load factor, and service life of the planet gears. In particular, it was confirmed that a service life of more than 20 years could be realized for wind turbine gearboxes by applying a flexible pin to the overhung mounted carrier.
Gears are components of transmission which transmit the power of an engine to a machine and offer numerous speed ratios, a compact structure, and high efficiency of power transmission. Gear train design in the automotive industry uses simulation software. However, PTO (Power Take-Off) gear design for agricultural applications uses the empirical method because of the wide range of load fluctuations in agricultural fields. The PTO is an important part of agricultural tractors which transmits the power to various tractor implements. Therefore, a simulation was essential to the optimal design of the PTO. When the PTO gear is optimally designed, there are many advantages such as low cost, reduced size, and light weight. In this study, we conducted the bending and contact safety factor simulation for the PTO gear of an agricultural tractor. The bending and contact safety factors were calculated on ISO 6336 : 2006 by decreasing the face widths of the PTO pinion and wheel gear from 18 mm at an interval of 1 mm. The safety factor of the PTO gear decreased as the face width decreased. The contact safety factors of the pinion and wheel gear were 1.45 and 1.53, respectively, when the face width was 18 mm. The simulation results showed that the face width of the PTO gear should be greater than 9 mm to maintain the bending and contact safety factors higher than 1. It would be possible to reduce the weight of the PTO gear for different uses and working conditions. This study suggests that the possibility of designing an optimal PTO gear decreases as its face width decreases.

TMED(Transmission Mounted Electric Device) parallel hybrid configuration can realize EV(Electric Vehicle) mode by disengaging the clutch between an engine and a transmission-mounted motor to improve efficiencies of low load driving and regenerative braking. In the EV mode, however, jerk can be induced since there are insufficient damping elements in the drive-train. Though the jerk gives demoralizing influence upon driving comport, adding a physical damper is not applicable due to constraints of the layout. This study suggests the jerk reduction control, composed of active damping method and torque profiling method, to suppress the jerk without hardware modification. The former method creates a virtual damper by generating absorbing torque in the opposite direction of the oscillation. The latter method reduces impulse on the mated gear teeth of the drive-train by limiting the gradient of traction torque when the direction of the torque is reversed. To validate the effectiveness of the suggested strategy, a series of vehicle tests are carried out and it is observed that the amplitude of the oscillation can be reduced by up to 83%.
The lifetime of power train components can be improved dramatically by finding crack initiation points with suitable software tools and optimization of the critical areas. With increasing capacities of computers the prediction of the lifetime for components by numerical methods gets more and more important. This paper discusses some applications of the outstanding fatigue simulation program FEMFAT supporting the assessment of uniaxially and multiaxially loaded components (as well as welding seams and spot joints). The theory applied in FEMFAT differs in some aspects from classical approaches like the nominal stress concept or the local one and can be characterized by the term "influence parameter method". The specimen S/N-curve is locally modified by different influence parameters as stress-gradient to take into account notch effects, mean-stress influence which is quantified by means of a Haigh-diagram, surface roughness and treatments, temperature, technological size, etc. It is possible to consider plastic deformations resulting in mean-stress rearrangements. The dynamic loading of power train components is very often multiaxial, e.g. the stress state at each time is not proportional to one single stress state. Hence, the directions of the principal axes vary with time. We will present the way how such complex load situations can be handled with FEMFAT by the examples of a crank case and a gear box.

To assure the safety of rolling stock, it is important to perform the fatigue analysis of reduction gear unit in rolling stock considering a variation of velocity and traction motor capability. This paper presents fatigue analysis of the damage of reduction gear unit of railway vehicle under variable amplitude loading(VAL) based on quasi-static fatigue analysis using finite element model and linear Miner's rule. The VAL for the simulation was constructed from the tractive effort curve and train run curves of railway vehicle under commercial operation condition using MSC.ADAMS dynamic analysis. The finite element model for evaluating the carburizing effect on the gear surface was used for predicting the fatigue life of the middle gear based on strain-life based approach. The results showed that the frequent high starting torque due to a quick start as well as increasing numbers of stops at station would decrease the fatigue life of reduction gear unit.

The power-train is the most important component of an agricultural tractor. In this study, the strength of the driving gear transmission of an 82 kW-class tractor was analyzed using equivalent torque during plow tillage. The load measurement system consisted of an engine revolution speed sensor, torque-meters, revolution speed sensors for four axles, and pressure sensors for two hydraulic pumps. The load data were measured during plow tillage for four speed stages: F2 (2.78 km/h), F5 (5.35 km/h), F7 (7.98 km/h), and F8 (9.75 km/h). Aspects of the gear-strength such as bending stress, contact stress, and safety factors were analyzed under two torque conditions: the equivalent torque at the highest plow load for the F8 speed stage and the maximum engine torque. The simulation results using KISSsoft showed that the maximum engine torque conditions had a lower safety factor than did the highest equivalent torque condition. The bending safety factors were > 1 at all gear stages, indicating that gear breakage did not occur under actual measured operating conditions, nor under the maximum torque conditions. However, the equivalent torque condition in the contact stress safety factor was > 1, and the maximum torque condition was < 1 at the first gear pair. The method of analysis using the equivalent torque showed lower stress and higher safety factor than did the method using maximum torque. Therefore, when designing a tractor by applying actual working torque, equivalent torque method would support more reliable product development.

Using a one-way clutch has been reported to be very effective in reducing the vibration of gear pairs. However, study on the effect of using a one-way clutch has been based on numerical analysis only, and no experimental study has yet been executed. Hence, in this study, experiments to verify the effectiveness of using a one-way clutch to reduce the torsional vibration have been executed. Dynamic responses over a wide range of speeds have been compared for various numbers and positions of the clutch. The results of the experiments verified that a one-way clutch is effective in reducing the vibration by decreasing the tooth mesh vibration as well as the vibration transmitted from the input shaft.

HMT is a type of continuously variable transmission which has split power flow path characteristics with gear train and hydro static unit. The benefit of improved fuel economy and high power capacity enables it to be a promising application fur large vehicles. This paper presents the analysis results including velocity, static torque, transmission efficiency and dynamic model of the HMT that is developed for city buses. The speeds or gear shafts, the static clutch torque and split power ratio for each mode are detailed here. From the analysis of HMT transmission efficiency considering the power loss in meshed gear and hydraulic unit, we can conclude that minimization of hydraulic power is necessary for improved fuel economy design. Also, the dynamic simulation result for mode shift characteristics shows that little shift shock is observed because of the synchronized rotation speed in clutch.
