  • The gated RapidArc may produce a dosimetric error due to the stop-and-go motion of heavy gantry which can misalign the gantry restart position and reduce the accuracy of important factors in RapidArc delivery such as MLC movement and gantry speed. In this study, the effect of stop-and-go motion in gated RapidArc was analyzed with varying gating window time, which determines the total number of stop-and-go motions. Total 10 RapidArc plans for treatment of liver cancer were prepared. The RPM gating system and the moving phantom were used to set up the accurate gating window time. Two different delivery quality assurance (DQA) plans were created for each RapidArc plan. One is the portal dosimetry plan and the other is MapCHECK2 plan. The respiratory cycle was set to 4 sec and DQA plans were delivered with three different gating conditions: no gating, 1-sec gating window, and 2-sec gating window. The error between calculated dose and measured dose was evaluated based on the pass rate calculated using the gamma evaluation method with 3%/3 mm criteria. The average pass rates in the portal dosimetry plans were $98.72{\pm}0.82%$, $94.91{\pm}1.64%$, and $98.23{\pm}0.97%$ for no gating, 1-sec gating, and 2-sec gating, respectively. The average pass rates in MapCHECK2 plans were $97.80{\pm}0.91%$, $95.38{\pm}1.31%$, and $97.50{\pm}0.96%$ for no gating, 1-sec gating, and 2-sec gating, respectively. We verified that the dosimetric accuracy of gated RapidArc increases as gating window time increases and efforts should be made to increase gating window time during the RapidArc treatment process.

  • Power converters are widely used in the applications of servo drives of ac and dc motors and power supplies. For the control of the converters carious control algorithms have been proposed and realized by gating signal generation. Software control shemes are being applied to implement the control algorithms, but analog circuits are still used for the gating signal generation because it requires very fast and precise timing. In this paper the gating signal generation with DSP software are proposed for the three phase to three phase PWM converter. Design procedures and software flowcharts are presented and some experimental waveforms are also presented to verify the proposed algorithms.

  • Casting defects, which are closely related to entrapped air bubbles and metallic oxides, occur very frequently in the casting process. Many researchers have shown that these defects can be reduced by adopting an appropriate gating system design. But, it is difficult for field engineers to identify a specific gating system that is more appropriate for their products. In this study, we tried to draw a comparison of gating system designs with and without ceramic foam filters. A ceramic foam filter was added to the horizontal runner just after the sprue to prevent air bubble generation and to reduce turbulence without change of the gating system design. To verify the effects of initial pouring velocity, the experiment was conducted with four different amounts of water volume in the reservoir. Results of the water modeling experiment applying the filter showed remarkably changed flow characteristics. Although the study confirmed that use of the filter may change the flow characteristics, it needs to be noted that only filter use alone cannot solve all the problems caused by a poorly designed gating system.

  • In this study, sand casting process was applied to manufacture a large aluminum turbo-type fan used for tank powerpack. To apply the sand casting method, the turbo fan was reverse engineered, and after designing three gating systems, the optimal gating system design was selected by performing casting simulation. In the case of the bottom up-gating system, there is a significant temperature loss of the molten alloy during blade filling. When the molten alloy is completely filled into the sand mold, the blade upper tip and front shroud are below the liquidus temperature. In the case of the top down-gating system, molten alloy scattering occurs, but the temperature loss while the blade is filled is smaller than that of the bottom up type. And after the inflow of molten alloy into the mold is completed, the blade upper tip and front shroud are higher than the liquidus temperature. A sand mold was manufactured with the top down-gating system and the casting process was performed. The fan was made perfectly in appearance without any unfilled parts.

  • This paper proposes a novel adaptive header-based power gating structure to compensate for the performance loss and the increased wake-up time of the power gating structures induced by the negative bias temperature instability (NBTI) effect. The proposed structure consists of variable width footers based on the two-pass power gating and a new NBTI sensing circuit for an adaptive control. The simulation results of the proposed structure are compared to those of power gating without the adaptive control and show that both the circuit-delay and wake-up time dependence of the power gating structure on the NBTI stress is minimized with only 3% and 4% increase, respectively while keeping small leakage power and rush-current. In this paper, a 45 nm CMOS technology and predictive NBTI model have been used to implement the proposed circuits.

  • Technology development is leading to the invention of more sophisticated electronics appliances that require long battery life. Therefore, saving power is a major concern in current-day scenarios. A notable source of power dissipation in sequential structures of integrated circuits is due to the continuous switching of high-frequency clock signals, which do not carry any information, and hence, their switching is eliminated by a method called clock gating. In this paper, we have incorporated a recent clock-gating style named Leakage Control Transistor (LECTOR)-based clock gating to drive a multi-stage sequential architectures, and we focus on its performance under three different process corners (fast-fast, slow-slow, typical-typical) through Monte Carlo simulation at 18 GHz clock with 90 nm technology. This gating is found to be one of the best gated approaches for multi-stage architectures in terms of total power consumption.

  • In Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI), the QRS complex of ECG is used as a trigger signal for MRI scan. But, gradient and RF(radio frequency) artifacts which are caused to static and dynamic field in MRI scanner cause interference in the ECG. Also, the signal shape of theses artifacts can be similar to the QRS-complex, causing possible misinterpretation during patient monitoring and false gating of the MRI. In case of using general FIR or IIR band-pass filters for minimizing the artifacts, artifact-reduction-ratio is not excellent. So, an adaptive real-time digital filter is proposed for reduction of noise by gradient and RF(radio frequency) artifacts. The proposed filter for MRI-Gating is based on the noise-canceller with NLMS(Normalized Least Mean Square) algorithm. The reference signals of the adaptive noise canceller are a combination of the noisy three channel ECG signals. In conclusions, the proposed method showed the acceptable quality of ECG signal with sufficient SNR for gating the MRI and possibility of real time implementation.

  • Vacuum molding process(V-process) has several benefits such as a lower total production cost and a high quality casting comparing to the conventional sand molding. Influence of the gating design on the molten metal flow was investigated in this study. General criteria for the gating design of the castings and commercial codes for the flow and solidification analysis were used to attain the optimized gating design in V-process. Though mold cavity was filled smoothly under the low initial velocity of molten metal, molten metal dashed against the upper part of the mold before the completion of the mold filling with higher initial molten metal velocity and fell soon. This phenomenon may affect collapsing the mold shape, however it is thought that the possibility of burning out of the vinyl by the molten metal is not so high because vinyl is coated with refractory material.

  • In this study, the casting process using forged insert was investigated to characterize the manufacturing process by which good mechanical properties can be obtained when compared with existing casting products. Process analysis for the casting design was performed by using FVM (Finite Volume Method) software. In filling process, three kinds of candidate gating systems are considered and analyzed respectively. The molten metal behavior in gating system is so important that it affects the solidification behavior of the cast.
