The purpose of this study was to define the content of physiological knowledge needed for clinical nursing practices. Subjects of physiology were classified into 15 areas, and each areas was further classified into subareas, resulting in a total of 194 subareas. The degree of importance of each subarea was measured with a 4-point scale. The subjects of this study were 179 nurses of two university hospitals located in Seoul and Inchon. The results were as follows : 1. The areas of physiology necessary for clinical nursing practice as a basic knowledge in the order of importance were : blood, respiratory system and renal physiology, function of the immune system, body fluid and cardiovascular system, body temperature, endocrine physiology and gastrointestinal physiology However, the degree of importance for reproductive physiology, neuro-physiology, energy and metabolism, cell and cell membrane physiology, muscular physiology and special sense was relatively low. 2. The most important content of physiology for all clinical areas in nursing was blood physiology. However, the degree of importance for each physiology area was different depending on clinical areas. 3. Subareas of physiology as a basic knowledge for clinical practice and education in nursing were blood transfusion, blood type, function of red blood cell, white blood cell and platelet, characteristics and function of hemoglobin, composition and function of plasma protein, and mechanism of blood coagulation and anticoagulation. In conclusion, areas of physiology necessary for clinical nursing practice were blood, respiratory system and renal physiology, function of immune, body fluid and cardiovascular system, body temperature, endocrine physiology and gastrointestinal physiology. However, the degree of importance for each physiology area was different depending on clinical areas In nursing.
The morphological changes of the enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal mucosae of Rana amurensis were observed during pre-hibernating, hibernating, post-hibernating and active period. The results of the observation are as follow: 1. The relative values of the enterochromaffin cell numbers in the pre-hibernating, hibernating and post-hibernating groups as compared with the active group are 1.50, 0.36 and 0.90, respectively. 2. In active and pre-hibernating groups, the enterochromaffin cells are large and middle-amount granulated cells and the sparse granulated cells increase significantly during hibernating and post-hibernating periods. 3. It is concluded that the morphological changes of enterochromaffin cells are due to lowered metabolic acitvities especially lowered endocrine activity during hibernation.
A peroxidase-antiperoxidase method was used to detect the cells showing immunoreactivities to six hormone antibodies in the alimentary tracts of six frog species, Rana nigromaculata, R. rugosa, R. amurensis coreana, R. catesbeiana, Bombina orientalis, and Hyla arborea japonica, inhabiting Korea. The cells immunoreactive to gastrin and cholecystokinin-8 were observed in the pylorus of the stomachs and in the small intestines of all frog species examined. In contrast, these somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were identified in the esophagus and the whole gastrointestinal tracts, but were absent from the large intestines in R. rugosa, R. catesbeiana, B. orientalis and H. arborea japonica. The pancreatic polypeptide (PP)-immunoreactive cells represented their distribution limited to the small intestines of R. amurensis coreana and H. arborea japonica, and they were additionally identified in the pylorus of the stomachs in the other four species. Serotonin- and glucagon- Immunoreactive cells revealed different regional distributions in which the former were observed throughout the whole alimentary tracts in all frog species investigated, whereas the latter were not found in these regions at all. Endocrine cells were relatively abundant in the pyloric portion of the stomach compared to other organs. The present study showed that all endocrine cells except for PP had a similar distribution in the alimentary tracts of all frog species used.
The regional distribution and relative frequency of endocrine cells in the GIT of the snakehead, Channa(Oph icephalus) argus were studied immunohistochemically. Five kinds of endocrine cells and one kind of nerve cell were identified in this study. A few numbers of secretin-immunoreactive cells were restricted to the cardia and fundus of the stomach. Moti-lin- and GRP-immunoreactive cells were rare in the epithelium of the distal and proximal intestines. PYY-immunoreactive cells were found in a few number in the pyloric caeca and were rare in the distal intestine. Substance P-immunoreactive cells were distributed relatively numerous from the fundus to the distal intetsine. Also, their nerve cells were detected in occurrence in the lamina propria in the distal intestine. No neurotensin-, met-Enk- and GIP-immunoreactive cells were found in the GIT of the snakehead.
In order to study the regional distribution and relative frequency of the immunoreactive endocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract of the Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus, the gastrointestinal tract was divided into 9 portions (cardia, fundus, pylorus, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, colon and rectum) and immunostained by immunohistochemical (PAP) method using 8 types of specific antisera against cholecystokinin (CCK)-8, gastrin, secretin, pancreatic polypeptide(PP), somatostatin, serotonin, glucagon and insulin. CCK-8-, gastrin-, somatostatin- and serotonin-immunoreactive cells were demonstrated in this study. These immunoreactive cells were found in the gastric gland regions of the pylorus or between parietal and chief cells of the fundus with round to spherical shaped, and in the interepithelial regions of the intestinal tract with spherical to spindle shaped except for jejunum where some of immunoreactive cells were also observed in the intestinal glands with round to spherical shaped. CCK-8-immunoreactive cells were restricted to the pylorus and duodenum with numerous and a few frequency, respectively. Gastrin-immunoreactive cells were restricted to the pylorus with numerous frequency. Similar to those of gastrin-immunoreactive cells, somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were restricted to pylorus with moderate frequency. Serotonin-immunoreactive cells were detected throughout whole gastrointestinal tract except for cardia and cecum with moderate or numerous frequency. However, no secretin-, PP-, glucagon- and insulin-immunoreactive cells were observed in this study. From these results, the appearance type, regional distribution and relative frequency of immunoreactive endocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract of the Mongolian gerbils were somewhat lowered or restricted compared to those of other mammals and these differences were might be caused by feeding habits and species specification.
The changes on the regional distributions and frequencies of somatostatin-immunoreactive (IR) cells in the fundus and pylorus of the stomach of osteoporotic Sprague-Dawley rats induced by ovariectomy were studied by immunohistochemical methods. The experimental animals were divided into two groups, one for non-ovariectomized group (Sham) and the other for ovariectomized group (OVX). Samples were collected from the fundus and pylorus regions at the 10 th week after ovariectomy or sham-operation. Somatostatin-IR cells were observed in both regions of the stomach regardless of ovariectomy. Most of these IR cells in the mucosa of the fundus or pylorus were generally spherical or spindle in shape (open type cell) while cells found in the gastric gland regions were round in shape (close type cell). Significantly lower number (P<0.01) of somatostatin-IR cells were detected in OVX as compared with Sham in the fundus and pylorus. In the present study, the density of somatostatin in the stomach was markedly decreased. Therefore, these changes in density of somatostatin-IR cells detected in this study may support the speculation that the development of gastrointestinal symptoms in osteoporosis such as impairments of calcium and some lipids, frequently encountered in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis because the changes in gastrointestinal endocrine density would reflect the change in the capacity of producing these hormones and regulating gut motility and digestion.
Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been changing the paradigm of cancer treatment. However, immune-related adverse effects (irAEs) have also increased with the exponential increase in the use of ICIs. ICIs can break up the immunologic homeostasis and reduce T-cell tolerance. Therefore, inhibition of immune checkpoint can lead to the activation of autoreactive T-cells, resulting in various irAEs similar to autoimmune diseases. Gastrointestinal toxicity, endocrine toxicity, and dermatologic toxicity are common side effects. Neurotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, and pulmonary toxicity are relatively rare but can be fatal. ICI-related gastrointestinal toxicity, dermatologic toxicity, and hypophysitis are more common with anti- CTLA-4 agents. ICI-related pulmonary toxicity, thyroid dysfunction, and myasthenia gravis are more common with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors. Treatment with systemic steroids is the principal strategy against irAEs. The use of immune-modulatory agents should be considered in case of no response to the steroid therapy. Treatment under the supervision of multidisciplinary specialists is also essential, because the symptoms and treatments of irAEs could involve many organs. Thus, this review focuses on the mechanism, clinical presentation, incidence, and treatment of various irAEs.
The regional distribution and relative frequency of somatostatin-immunoreactive cells in the gastrointestinal tract were studied during the postnatal development(1 day old, 1 month old, 6-month-old and adult) of the Korean native goat by immunohistochemical methods. Somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were found in the entire gastrointestinal tract and were most predominant in the fundic gland region except for the pyloric gland region of the 1 day old. The number of these cells was observed to decrease along the gastrointestinal tract and to decrease according to the increase with age in all postnatal stages. In this study, immunoreactive cells revealed the differences of regional distribution and the relative frequency in the gastrointestinal tract during postnatal development. These results suggest that although the functional significance of fetal endocrine cells remains unknown, this was caused by changing of feeding habits and physiological conditions during different ages.
The regional distribution and relative frequency of neurohormonal peptides-producing cells were demonstrated in the gut of the stomach teleost, the Mandarin fish, Siniperca scherzeri Steindachner, using 7 types of specific antisera raised against mammalian regulatory peptides. The gastrointestinal tract of the Mandarin fish was divided into three portions from proximal to distal, stomach, small intestine and large intestine. Cells showing immunoreactivities against regulatory peptides were situated in the epithelial lining, between epithelial cells, and gastric or intestinal gland regions with various frequencies along with gastrointestinal tract. Mast of immunoreactive cells in the epithelial lining portion were generally spherical or spindle shape having long cytoplasmic process that were reached to the lumen (open type cell) while cells showing round in shape (closed type cell) were found in the gastric gland of the stomach occasionally. Serctonin-, samatostatin-, gastrin-, cholecystokinin (CCK)-8- and human pancreatic polypeptide (HPP)-immunoreactive cells were observed in this study. However, no insulin- and glucagon-immunoreactive cells were found. Serotonin- and somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were restricted to the stomach regions with moderate and numerous frequencies, respectively. Gastrin-immunoreactive cells were demonstrated in the stomach and small intestinal portions with a few and moderate frequencies, respectively and CCK-8-immunoreactive cells were restricted to the small intestinal portions with moderate frequency. In addition, HPP-immunoreactive cells were demonstrated in the stomach and small intestine with numerous frequencies, respectively. In conclusion, the distribution and relative frequency of these immunoreactive cells in the gastrointestinal tract of the Mandarin fish shows peculiar patterns compared to those of other stomach and/or stomachless teleost.
Endocrine cells in the cardiac and fundic regions of the Korean hedgehog were studied ultrastructurally. Five types of endocrine cells classified as EC, ECL, $D_1$. G and A-like cells were identified in these regions. EC cells contained pleomorphic granules, 170~500nm in diameter, with high electron density and highly dense bodies in a dense matrix. ECL cells were characterized by the presence of round or oval granules, 220~450nm in diameter, with high electron density. Some granules of ECL cells showed a small amounts of contents or empty. $D_1$ cells contained round and relatively small granules, 140~400nm in diameter, with low to moderate electron density. G cells were characterized by the presence of round or oval granules, 200~400nm in diameter, with moderate electron density. Some granules of these cells showed a narrow halo between the limiting membrane and the granular matrix. A-like cells contained round granules, 170~260nm in diameter, With high electron density. The granules of these cells showed homogeneous matrix surrounded by the tight membrane.
