  • Direct reaction of elemental silicon with a gaseous mixture of isopropyl chloride (1) and hydrogen chloride in the presence of copper catalyst using a stirred bed reactor equipped with a spiral band agitator gave isopropyldichlorosilane having a Si-H bond (2a) as a major product and isopropyltrichlorosilane (2b) along with chlorosilanes, trichlorosilane and tetrachlorosilane. A process for production of 2a was maximized using the 1:0.5 mole ratio of 1 to HCl and smaller size of elemental silicon at a reaction temperature of 220 °C. When a reaction was carried out by feeding a gaseous mixture of 1 [12.9 g/h (0.164 mol/h)] and HCl [2.98 g/h (0.082 mol/h)] to a contact mixture of elemental silicon (360 g) and copper (40 g) under the optimum condition for 45 h, 2a among volatile products kept up about 82 mol % until 35 h and then slowly decreased down 68 mol % in 45 h reaction. Finally 2a was obtained in 38% isolated yield (based on 1 used) with an 85% consumption of elemental silicon in a 45 h reaction. In addition to 2a, 2b was obtained as minor product along with chlorosilanes, trichlorosilane, and tetrachlorosilane. The decomposition of 1 was suppressed and the production of 2a improved by adding HCl to 1.

  • The influence of thermodynamic transition associated with transcritical nitrogen injection upon the flow structure was investigated to explore numerical simulation of the injectant dynamics of oxygen/hydrogen coaxial jet in liquid rocket engines. Single and coaxial nitrogen jets were treated by comparing the transcritical and perfect-gaseous conditions, wherein the numerical model was accommodative to the real-fluid thermodynamics and transport properties at supercritical pressures. The model was in the first place validated by comparing the results of transcritical nitrogen injection between calculations and available experiments. For a single jet under the transcritical condition, the nitrogen kept a relatively high density up to its pseudo-critical temperature inside the mixing layer, since it remains less expanding until heated up to its pseudo-critical temperature. Numerical analysis revealed that cryogenic jets exhibit strong dependence of specific enthalpy profile upon the associated density profile that are both dominated by turbulent thermal diffusion. In the numerical model, therefore, exact evaluation of turbulent heat fluxes becomes very important for simulating turbulent cryogenic jets under supercritical pressures. Concerning the coaxial jets due to transcritical/gaseous nitrogen injections, the density profile inside the mixing layer was again affected by the thermodynamic transition of nitrogen. However, hydrodynamic instability modes of the inner jet did not show significant differences by this thermodynamic transition, so that further study is needed for the mixing process downstream of the near injection position.

  • In this study, the cooling performance of a C/C composite material structure with metallic cooling tubes fixed by elastic force without chemical bonding was evaluated experimentally using combustion gas in a rocket combustor. The C/C composite chamber was covered by a stainless steel outer shell to maintain its airtightness. Gaseous hydrogen as a fuel and gaseous oxygen as an oxidizer were used for the heating test. The surface of these C/C composites was maintained below 1500 K when the combustion gas temperature was about 2900 K and heat flux to the combustion chamber wall was about 9 $MW/m^2$. No thermal damage was observed on the stainless steel tubes which were in contact with the C/C composite materials. Results of the heating test showed that such a metallic-tube-cooled C/C composite structure is able to control the surface temperature as a cooling structure(also as a heat exchanger), as well as indicating the possibility of reducing the amount of the coolant even if the thermal load to the engine is high. Thus, application of the metallic-tube-cooled C/C composite structure to reusable engines such as a rocket-ramjet combined cycle engine is expected.

  • The principal aim of this field study was to determine the concentrations and emissions of gaseous contaminants such as ammonia and hydrogen sulfide in the different types of pig buildings in Korea and allow objective comparison between Korea and the other countries in terms of pig housing types. This field study was performed from May to June and from September to October in 2002. Pig buildings investigated in this research were selected in terms of three criteria; manure removal system, ventilation mode and growth stage of pig. Measurements of concentration and emission of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide in the pig buildings were done in 5 housing types and the visited farms were 15 sites per each housing type. Concentrations of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide were measured at three locations of the central alley in the pig building and emission rates of them were estimated by multiplying the average concentration($mg/m^3$) measured near the air outlet by the mean ventilation rate($m^3/h$) and expressed either per pig of liveweight 75kg(mg/h/pig) or per area($mg/h/m^2$). Concentrations of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide in the pig buildings were averaged to 7.5 ppm and 286.5 ppb and ranged from 0.8 to 21.4 ppm and from 45.8 to 1,235 ppb, respectively. The highest concentrations of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide were found in the mechanically ventilated buildings with slats; 12.1 ppm and 612.8 ppb, while the lowest concentrations of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide were found in the pig buildings with deep-litter bed system(2.2 ppm) and the naturally ventilated pig buildings with manure removal system by scraper(115.2 ppb), respectively(p<0.05). All the pig buildings were investigated not to exceed the threshold limit values(TLVs) of ammonia(25 ppm) and hydrogen sulfide(10 ppm). The mean emissions of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide per pig(75kg in terms of liveweight) and area($m^2$) from pig buildings were 250.2 mg/h/pig and 37.8 mg/h/pig and $336.3mg/h/m^2$ and $50.9mg/h/m^2$, respectively. The pig buildings with deep-litter bed system showed the lowest emissions of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide(p<0.05). However, the emissions of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide from the other pig buildings were not significantly different(p>0.05). Concentrations and emissions of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide were relatively higher in the pig buildings managed with deep-pit manure system with slats and mechanical ventilation mode than the different pig housing types. In order to prevent pig farm workers from adverse health effect caused by exposure to ammonia and hydrogen sulfide in pig buildings, they should wear the respirators during shift and be educated sustainably for the guideline related to occupational safety.

  • Nitriding layers developed during gaseous nitriding of AISI4115 steels for the application of steel bushing part were investigated. The compound layer thickness of about 10㎛, 0.3mm of case depth under the same conditions, and conventional nitriding, nitrocarburizing, and controlled nitriding were performed in three methods. In the controlled nitriding, KN was controlled by measuring the hydrogen partial pressure. The nitrided samples were analyzed by micro Vickers hardness test, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The phases of compound layer were identified by X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction. The controlled nitriding specimen indicated the highest surface hardness of about 860 HV0.1. The compound layer of the conventional nitriding and nitrocarburizing specimen was formed with about 46% porous layer and 𝜺 + 𝜸' phase, and about 13% porous layer and about 80% 𝜸' phase were formed on the controlled nitriding specimen. As a result of the Ball-on-disk wear test, the worn mass loss of ball performed on the surface of the controlled nitriding specimen was the largest. The controlled nitriding specimen had the highest surface hardness due to the lowest porous percentage of compound layer, which improved the wear resistance.

  • Moisture content in the coating of an electrode is known to cause defects such as porosities, fish eyes and cracks in the weld metal, however, quantitative relationship between them is not clearly understood. In this study widely consumed and the most common type of arc welding rods such as ilmenite and low hydrogen type were chosen for the investigation, and attempts were made to correlate the relationship between the mechanical properties and gas contents when welding was carried out with electrodes of various moisture contents. As the relative humidity changed from 70% to 92%, it was determined that moisture content to reach saturation was in the range of 0.6~6.8%. As the moisture content in the electrode coating was increased, the amount of gaseous components (H, O, N) in the weld metal was accordingly increased, especially diffusible hydrogen showed prominent effect, i.e. it increased proportionally to the increase of the moisture content. The mechanical properties of the weld metal was observed to become more inferior as the diffusible hydrogen was greater. It was determined for ilmenite type of electrode that the increase of hydrogen content was approximately 1.8ml per unit weight percent increase of moisture and also tensile strength resulted lowering from $45.3kg/\textrm{mm}^2$ to $42.7kg/\textrm{mm}^2$ as moisture content increased from 0.7% to 6.8%. For low hydrogen type the increase of the hyrogen was about 2.4ml per unit percent of moisture and tensile strength decreased from $63.0kg/\textrm{mm}^2$ to $53.8kg/\textrm{mm}^2$ particularly in the region of moisture content 0.1~4.2%.

  • Methane is partially oxidized to produce the syngas by the lattice oxygen of metal oxides in the absence of gaseous oxygen. The present work deals with ferrite including copper component, which does not chemisorb methane, to investigate the suppression of the carbon deposition during the reduction of metal oxides by methane. Iron-based oxides of $Cu_xFe_{3-x}O_4$(X=0.25, 0.5, 1.0) was synthesized by the co-precipitation method. Thermogravimetric Analysis(TGA) was used to observe the isothermal reduction behavior of $Cu_xFe_{3-x}O_4$ and $Fe_3O_4$ at $600-900^{\circ}C$ under methane atmosphere. The crystal structures of reduced specimens were characterized by X-rays powder diffraction(XRD) technique. From the analyses of TGA, it is concluded that the reduction kinetics of $CuFe_2O_4$ was the fastest among $Fe_3O_4$ and $Cu_xFe_{3-x}O_4$(X=0.25, 0.5, 1.0). The X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that $Cu_xFe_{3-x}O_4$ was decomposed to Cu and $Fe_3O_4$ phase at $600^{\circ}C$ and was reduced to Cu and Fe phase at $800^{\circ}C$. $Fe_3O_4$, which was reduced at $900^{\circ}C$, showed Fe, graphite and $Fe_3C$ phases. On the contrary, $Cu_xFe_{3-x}O_4$ does not show the graphite or $Fe_3C$ phases. This results infer that Cu component suppress the carbon deposition on Cu-ferrite.

  • Although CNG is able to meet the current emission standards, it is expected to be impossible to satisfy the requirements of the next EURO-6 emission regulation without an additional after-treatment device. Hydrogen is known to be a gaseous fuel which features the wide flammability limit and the fast reactivity. A certain amount of hydrogen addition to CNG is able to extend the lean combustion range and produce lesser amounts of harmful emissions. In this research, the combustion and emission characteristics of HCNG(mixture of Hydrogen and CNG) fuel were experimented in an 11-liter heavy duty lean burn engine varying hydrogen contents, air-to-fuel ratio and spark timing. The optimization of this HCNG engine for a city bus was performed through the evaluations of oxidation catalyst characteristics.

  • The stability of the prepared silica membrane by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method in the HI-$H_2O$ gaseous mixture was evaluated aiming at the application for hydrogen iodide decomposition in the thermochemical IS process. Porous $\alpha$-alumina having pore size of 100 nm was modified by the different CVD temperature using tetraethoxysilane as the Si source. The CVD temperature was $700^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$, and $600^{\circ}C$. The $H_2$/H$_2$ selectivities of the modified membranes which were measured by single-component permeation experiment showed 43.2, 12.6, and 8.7 at $600^{\circ}C$ for the M1 (CVD temperature was $700^{\circ}C$), M2 (CVD temperature was $650^{\circ}C$) and M3 membranes (CVD temperature was $600^{\circ}C$), respectively. Stability experiment in the HI-$H_2O$ gaseous mixture was carried out at $450^{\circ}C$. The prepared silica membrane at $600^{\circ}C$ of CVD temperature was more stable than that at the other CVD temperature.
