  • In this study, the novel concept catalytic reactor was designed for water-gas shift reaction (WGS) under high pressure. The novel concept catalytic reactor was composed of an autoclave, the catalyst, and liquid water. Cu-ZnO/$Al_2O_3$ as the low temperature shift catalyst was used for WGS reaction. WGS in the novel concept catalytic reactor was carried out at the ranges of 150~$250^{\circ}C$ and 30~50 atm. The liquid water was filled at the bottom of the autoclave catalytic reactor and the catalyst of pellet type was located at the gas-liquid water interface. It was concluded that WGS reaction occurred over the surface of catalysts partially wetted with liquid water. The conversion of CO for WGS was also controlled with changing content of Cu and ZnO used as the catalytic active components. Meanwhile, the catalyst of honey comb type coated with Cu-ZnO/$Al_2O_3$ was used in order to increase the contact area between wet-surface of catalyst and the reactants of gas phase. It was confirmed from these experiments that $H_2$/CO ratio of the simulated coal gas increased from 0.5 to 0.8 by WGS at gas-liquid water interface over the wet surface of honey comb type catalyst at $250^{\circ}C$ and 50 atm.

  • Numerical simulation is performed for microdroplet deposition on a pre-patterned micro-structure. The level-set method for tracking the liquid-gas interface is extended to treat the immersed (or irregular-shaped) solid surface. The no-slip condition at the fluid-solid interface as well as the matching conditions at the liquid-gas interface is accurately imposed by incorporating the ghost fluid approach based on a sharp-interface representation. The method is further extended to treat the contact angle condition at an immersed solid surface. The present computation of a patterning process using microdroplet ejection demonstrates that the multiphase characteristics between the liquid-gas-solid phases can be used to improve the patterning accuracy.

  • Free surface liquid jet impingement, which is applicable to cooling of hot plates in a steel-making process, is investigated numerically by solving the conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy in the liquid and gas phases. The free-surface of liquid-gas interface is tracked by an improved level-set method incorporating a sharp-interface technique for accurate imposition of stress and heat flux conditions on the liquid-gas interface. The level-set approach is combined with a non-equilibrium $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model. The computations are made for slit nozzle jets to investigate their flow and cooling characteristics. Also, the effects of jetting angle, velocity and moving velocity of plate on the interfacial motion and the associated flow and temperature fields are quantified.

  • In this study, we investigate the discontinuous-derivative treatment at the gas-liquid interface in underwater explosion (UNDEX) problems by using the Moving Least Squares-Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (MLS-SPH) method, which is known as one of the particle methods suitable for problems where large deformation and inhomogeneity occur in the whole domain. Because the numerical oscillation of pressure arises from derivative discontinuity in the UNDEX analysis using the standard SPH method, the MLS shape function with Discontinuous-derivative Basis Function (DBF) that is able to represent the derivative discontinuity of field function is utilized in the MLS-SPH formulation in order to suppress the nonphysical pressure oscillation. The effectiveness of the MLS-SPH with DBF is demonstrated in comparison with the standard SPH and conventional MLS-SPH though a shock tube problem and benchmark standard problems of UNDEX of a trinitrotoluene (TNT) charge.

  • Catalytic slurry reactors, in which a solid maintained in the rom of fine particles suspended in a liquid, are frequently used in chemical and biochemical and industries. In these processes the particle loading is normally low so that the effects of particles on the liquid-film mass transfer coefacent and the gas-liquid interface area are assumed to be negligible. But it is known from the works, amongst others, that the finely powdered activated carbon can increase the gas-liquid mass transfer significantly in surface-aerated reactors. The stirred cell (13.2cm inside diameter) contained four baffles and at the stirring speeds range of 80 ∼ 300ppm, the gas-liquid interfacial area could be considered as that of the cross section of the vessel (that is, 130.1cm2). When the stirrer speeds were increased, the effective interfacial area was slightly higher than the geometric area and was obtained experimentally from the Danckwerts plots. Key Words : gas-liquid interfacial area, Duckwert's Plot stirred dell. mass transfer coefficient.

The liquid-air interface is tracked by a level-set method, which is improved by incorporating a sharp-interface modeling technique for accurately enforcing the matching conditions at the liquid-gas interface and the no-slip condition at the fluid-solid interface. • Vortices terminating at free surface have been investigated extensively. however. are focused on surface parallel vortices and little has been known about surface normal vortex or columnar vortex. Visualized experimental results utilizing LlF technique are discussed for the purpose of characterization of columnar vortex interacting with a clean and a contaminated free surfaces and a solid body interface in the present investigation. The results reveal that surface tension changes due to surface contamination although bulk viscosity remains constant and eventually the behavior of a columnar vortex interacting with a contaminated free surface and a solid body interface are totally different from the clean free surface case.

  • Ammonia gas was blown into the solution of zirconium ion to induce precipitation of supersaturated zirconium ion at gas-liquid interface with increase in pH. The influence of pH on the phase and particle size of precipitate and calcined powders has been investigated. At pH 4.5 of zirconium solution, maximum yield of 98.7% was obtained. Above pH 4.5, there was no more increase of yield. Above pH 5.5, large aggregates consisting of primary particles were observed in precipitate and calcined powders. At pH 4.5, almost aggregate-free fine spherical zirconia powders were obtained.

  • Good quality LiNbO3 single crystals which can be applied to SAW devices, were grown by Czochralski method. It was observed that the gas-bubbles were concentrated in ring shape at the outer part of grown crystals, and this anomaly was illustrated by modeling the mechanism of gas-bubble entrapment according to the melt flow pattern in the crucible. And this mechanism was also encertained by observation of solid-liquid interface shape of grown crystals. The optimal condition for good quality crystals was known that the solid-liquid interface shape was slightly concave.
