DEHP Migration Behavior from Excessively Plasticized PVC Sheets

  • The quantity, process and kinetics of di-(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) migration in the 30/70 and 40/60 poly(vinylchloride) (PVC)/DEHP blends were investigated using gas chromatograph. A thin and flexible PVC sheet was soaked in surrounding medium (SM) of water/ethanol mixture and acetonitrile with constant stirring to release DEHP. By observed concentration of DEHP in the SM, it is found that acetonitrile is more intense in DEHP migration than water/ethanol mixture. In addition the amount of extracted DEHP is proportional to the leaching temperature and added ratio of DEHP. The behavior of DEHP migration from flexible PVC sheets was described by the Ficks's law with $2.72-10.1\;{times}\;10^{-10}$ cm²/s of the diffusion coefficients.

종이포장재로부터 잠재적 휘발성 오염물질의 기체상을 통한 식품으로의 이행 (Migration of Potential Volatile Surrogate Contaminants from Paper Packaging into Food through Gas Phase)

  • 포장재에 잔존하는 인쇄 관련 유기용매가 식품으로 포장공간을 통하여 이행되는 가능성을 평가하기 위하여, 식품포장을 모사한 이행실험 시스템을 구성하여 이행가능오염 물질의 기체를 통한 식품으로의 이행량을 측정하였다. 포장식품에서 잠재적인 오염물질 중 인쇄와 관련한 유기 용매 중 비교적 휘발성이 높은 toluene p,m,o-xylene 등을 종이 포장재에 오염시키고, 이를 식품시료와 함께 밀폐 용기내에 두고, 이들 유기용매가 얼마나 식품으로 이행되는지를 측정하였다. 대표적 식품으로서 식품성분특성에 따라 당질, 단백질, 지방이 주 구성성분인 식품으로서 카라멜, 우육포, 버터를 선정하여 10, 25, 4$0^{\circ}C$의 조건에 평형상태의 이행정도를 측정하였다. 휘발성 유기 용매의 이행은 지방성 식품에서 아주 높게 이루어졌으며, 당질 식품인 카라멜의 경우 실험온도의 범위에서 37∼56%의 행율을 보였고, 단백질 함량이 높은 우육포에서는 37∼77%의 이행률을 나타내었다. 온도의 영향은 우육포에서만 유의하게 나타났으며, 이 경우 고온에서 높은 이행비율을 보였다. 용매 종류에 따라서는 이행정도에 차이를 보이지는 않았다.

Natural gas hydrate occurrence and detection in the Sea of Okhotsk

  • The Sea of Okhotsk is the unique area providing the highest methane production rate of the northern hemisphere. The area of focused fluid venting offshore the NE Sakhalin continental slope was investigated during the CHAOS (Hydro-Carbon Hydrate Accumulations in the Okhotsk Sea) expeditions onboard of RV "Akademik Lavrentyev" In 2003, 2005 and 2006. The International Research Project CHAOS (Russia-Korea-Japan) aimed at the study of gas hydrate formation processes associated with the fluid venting in the Sea of Okhotsk. Several new gas hydrate accumulations were discovered during the cruise. Hydrate-associated structures have been named as KOPRI, VNIIOKeangeologia, POI and KIT (the names of cruise participant institutes) Some of hydrate-bearing cores contain big amount of gas hydrates: massive gas hydrate layers (up to 35cm thick) were recovered. The shallowest submarine gas hydrate accumulations in the world (at the depth less then 400m) were discovered during the cruise.

가스 하이드레이트 부존층의 하부 경계면을 규명하기 위한 심도영역 탄성파 구간속도 분석 (Seismic interval velocity analysis on prestack depth domain for detecting the bottom simulating reflector of gas-hydrate)

  • For gas hydrate exploration, long offset multichannel seismic data acquired using by the 4km streamer length in Ulleung basin of the East Sea. The dataset was processed to define the BSRs (Bottom Simulating Reflectors) and to estimate the amount of gas hydrates. Confirmation of the presence of Bottom Simulating reflectors (BSR) and investigation of its physical properties from seismic section are important for gas hydrate detection. Specially, faster interval velocity overlying slower interval velocity indicates the likely presences of gas hydrate above BSR and free gas underneath BSR. In consequence, estimation of correct interval velocities and analysis of their spatial variations are critical processes for gas hydrate detection using seismic reflection data. Using Dix's equation, Root Mean Square (RMS) velocities can be converted into interval velocities. However, it is not a proper way to investigate interval velocities above and below BSR considering the fact that RMS velocities have poor resolution and correctness and the assumption that interval velocities increase along the depth. Therefore, we incorporated Migration Velocity Analysis (MVA) software produced by Landmark CO. to estimate correct interval velocities in detail. MVA is a process to yield velocities of sediments between layers using Common Mid Point (CMP) gathered seismic data. The CMP gathered data for MVA should be produced after basic processing steps to enhance the signal to noise ratio of the first reflections. Prestack depth migrated section is produced using interval velocities and interval velocities are key parameters governing qualities of prestack depth migration section. Correctness of interval velocities can be examined by the presence of Residual Move Out (RMO) on CMP gathered data. If there is no RMO, peaks of primary reflection events are flat in horizontal direction for all offsets of Common Reflection Point (CRP) gathers and it proves that prestack depth migration is done with correct velocity field. Used method in this study, Tomographic inversion needs two initial input data. One is the dataset obtained from the results of preprocessing by removing multiples and noise and stacked partially. The other is the depth domain velocity model build by smoothing and editing the interval velocity converted from RMS velocity. After the three times iteration of tomography inversion, Optimum interval velocity field can be fixed. The conclusion of this study as follow, the final Interval velocity around the BSR decreased to 1400 m/s from 2500 m/s abruptly. BSR is showed about 200m depth under the seabottom

동해 울릉분지 가스하이드레이트 형성에 관한 지구물리해석 (Geophysical study about gas hydrate formation in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea)

  • On the basis of seismic interpretation, seismic indicators of gas hydrate and associated gas such as bottom simulating reflector (BSR), acoustic blanking, column structure, gas seepage, enhanced reflection were identified in the Ulleung Basin. Fractures, faults, sandy layer could be the migration pathways transporting fluid and gas to stability zone. The formation of gas hydrate in the Ulleung Basin include: (1) nodules, veins, layers in muddy sediments and disseminated forms in sandy layer within localized column structure, (2) disseminated forms in sandy layer, and (3) disseminated forms in sandy layer just above BSR.

식품용 합성수지제 공기차단성 포장재에서의 재질 및 용출시험량 조사 (Investigation on the Material and Migration Tests of Gas Impermeable Plastic Vacuum Packaging Materials for Food-Contact Use)

  • 국내에서 유통 중인 NY/PE 또는 NY/LLDPE, PETP/PE와 PVDC 재질의 총 28가지 식품용 공기차단성 합성수지 필름들을 수집하여 증발잔류물(총이행량), 항산화제, 과망간산칼륨소비량, 중금속, 그리고 가소제에 대한 재질실험과/또는 용출실험을 함으로써 이들 포장재들이 국내 기준규격에 적합한지 여부와 안전성 수준을 파악하였다. 지방성식품모사용매로서 n-heptane을 이용하여 측정한 총이행량의 평균값은 NY/PE 또는 NY/LLDPE, PETP/PE와 PVDC에서 각각 7.6, 6.9, 그리고 14.1 mg/L이었다. 이러한 총이행량값은 국내 식품공전에 명시된 PE과 PVDC 재질에 대한 기준치인 150과 30 mg/L와 비교하여 매우 낮은 수준이었다. 조사된 거의 대부분의 포장재 시료들에서 Irganox 1010, Irganox 1076과 Irgafos 168같은 항산화제들이 검출되었다. 특정이행량 실험 결과 PVDC를 제외한 모든 시료들에서 Irganox 1076과 Irgafos 168이 이행된 것으로 확인되었는데 Ny/PE/LLDPE(15/25/50 ${\mu}m$) 시료로 Irganox 1076이 216.9 ${\mu}g/g$ 이행된 것이 가장 높은 값이었던 것으로 확인되었다. 조사된 시료들에서 가소제들은 모두 검출한계 이상으로 확인이 불가능하였으며, 과망간산칼륨소비량은 국내 기준치인 10 mg/L보다 훨씬 낮은 수준이었음이 확인되었다. 조사된 모든 재질내 카드뮴과 납의 함량은 국내 기준치인 100 mg/kg보다 매우 낮은 수준이었고 이행량은 검출한계 이하의 값을 보였다. 국내외 관련 법규에서의 국내 식품용 용기포장재에 대한 안전성과 관련한 재질과 용출실험의 기준치를 감안할 때 모든 차단성 합성수지식품 포장재 시료들은 조사된 항목에 대한 현행 기준 규격에 적합한 것으로 확인되었다.

동부 심해 울릉분지의 천연가스 하이드레이트 (Natural gas hydrates in the eastern deep-water Ulleung Basin)

  • Piston cores retrieved from the eastern part of the deep-water Ulleung Basin were analyzed to access the potential of hydrocarbon gas generation and natural gas hydrate (NGH) formation. Seismic data acquired in the study area were also analyzed to determine the presence of hydrocarbon gas and/or NGH, and to map their distribution. Core analyses revealed high total organic carbon (TOC) contents which favor hydrocarbon generation. The cores recovered from the southern study area showed the sufficient residual hydrocarbon gas concentrations for the formation of significant NGH. These cores also showed the cracks developed parallel to the bedding that suggest significant gas content in situ. A number of seismic blanking zones were observed on seismic data. They are identified as vertical to sub-vertical chimneys caused by the upward migration of pore fluid or gas, and containing of free gas and/or NGH. Often, they are associated with velocity pull-up structures that are interpreted to be the result of high-velocity NGH. The seismic data also showed several bottom-simulating reflectors (BSRs) that are associated with overlying NGH and underlying free gas. The distribution of blanking zones and BSRs would be impacted by the lateral differences of upward methane fluxes.

역시간 구조보정을 활용한 해저 기포플룸 영상화 연구 (Study of Imaging of Submarine Bubble Plume with Reverse Time Migration)

  • 해양 환경에서의 기포는 바람, 파도, 선박 및 해저 가스 누출을 포함한 여러 요인에 의해 생성된다. 수중에서의 기포는 강력한 산란 신호를 생성하여 음향 신호를 측정하는데 영향을 미친다. 이러한 기포의 특성은 음파 신호의 세기를 감쇠시켜 소음 차단 목적으로 주로 이용되고 있으며, 최근에는 해저에서 대규모로 누출되는 메탄가스 탐지를 위한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 이러한 가스 누출은 기포플룸의 형태를 취하며, 기포의 물리적 특성과 분포 구조를 이해하는 것은 누출된 가스를 기후 변화와 연관성을 파악하는데 중요한 요소 중 하나이다. 본 연구에서는 탄성파 영상화 기법을 이용하여 기포플룸의 분포를 추정하고자 수조환경에서 실험을 수행하였으며, 별도로 제작된 인공기포 발생기, 자료 취득 시스템을 이용하여 기포에 의한 음향 신호를 취득하였다. 기포플룸을 영상화하기 위해 지진파 영상기법 중 역시간 구조보정을 이용하였으며, 획득한 음향 신호의 포락선 신호를 이용하여 기포 분포 패턴을 효과적으로 추정하였다. 영상화 결과의 검증을 위해 추정된 기포플룸의 분포와 광학카메라 영상을 비교하였다. 실험결과 탄성파 영상화 기법 통해 인공 기포플룸의 산란신호를 이용한 영상화가 가능함을 확인하였다.

High-Resolution Simulations of the Nuclear Star-Forming Ring

  • We have performed a set of high-resolution simulations of nuclear star-forming ring that results in an inward gas migration from the galactic disk. Our simulations consider gas heating/cooling, star formation, and supernova feedback. The galactic potential was obtained from a snapshot of a 6.3 million particle simulation of a galactic disk at 1 Gyr, which manifests spiral arms and pseudo-bulge. The potential was modeled with a combination of 3-dimensional spherical (for the pseudo-bulge) and 2-dimensional cylindrical (for the disk) multipole expansion technique. With such a potential model, one can easily set up various realistic 3-dimensional potential models by slightly changing the expansion coefficients. We have performed a set of simulations with a few million gas particles covering the central ~6 kpc of the disk for different pseudo-bulge sizes and non-axisymmetry, and we report the dependence of the gas inflow rate, size of the star-forming ring, and star-formation rate in the ring on the size and strength of the non-axisymmetry in the bulge.

Methane Oxidation in Landfill Cover Soils: A Review

  • Migration of methane ($CH_4$) gas from landfills to the surrounding environment negatively affects both humankind and the environment. It is therefore essential to develop management techniques to reduce $CH_4$ emissions from landfills to minimize global warming and to reduce the human risks associated with $CH_4$ gas migration. Oxidation of $CH_4$ in landfill cover soil is the most important strategy for $CH_4$ emissions mitigation. $CH_4$ oxidation occurs naturally in landfill cover soils due to the abundance of methanotrophic bacteria. However, the activities of these bacteria are influenced by several controlling factors. This study attempts to review the important issues associated with the $CH_4$ oxidation process in landfill cover soils. The $CH_4$ oxidation process is highly sensitive to environmental factors and cover soil properties. The comparison of various biotic system techniques indicated that each technique has unique advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of the best technique for a specific application depends on economic constraints, treatment efficiency and landfill operations.
