Disposal of Highly Toxic Wastes by using High Temperature and High Pressure Combustor (난분해성 환경오염물질의 고온.고압연소)

  • Disposal of highly toxic wastes like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is very difficult. These substances create a growing mountain of problematic waste that has to be disposed properly. Conventional technologies that are based on common burning(rotary kiln, ${\sim}1100^{\circ}C$) and plasma technology(${\sim}10000^{\circ}C$) do not satisfy important conditions. for example, complete combustion of the toxic waste and the price of waste disposal. The combustor like a rocket engine is operated at relatively high pressure(${\sim}15$ bar) and relatively high temperature(>$3000^{\circ}C$) that are ideal for the complete destruction of extremely toxic substances. In this study, test compound($_o-DCB$) was dissolved in kerosine with a concentration of 10%. Pure gas oxygen was used as an oxidant. Analysis showed that the destruction efficiency achieved for ${o}-DCB$ was 99.9999% or better. The results show that a combustor based on liquid propllant rocket technology is a validated tool for the disposal of highly toxic waste, and a good alternative technology when applied to the destruction of extremely toxic wastes.

Status of Pyrometallurgical Treatment Technology of EAF Dust (제강분진의 건식 처리기술 현황)

  • EAF (Electric arc furnace) dust is an important secondary resource such as zinc, lead, and iron. Recycling of EAF dust is benefit to solving disposal and environmental problems caused by the heavy metals entrained in the dust. In this study, pyrometallurgical treatment technology of EAF dust reviewed for the improvement of conventional process and development of new process. The existing technologies categorized into four groups: those by rotary kiln process, rotary hearth furnace (RHF) process, shaft type process, and reduction smelting process. The product of these processes are ZnO and Fe or slag as a waste. Their mechanisms for the production of ZnO from EAF dust were carbothermic reduction and oxidation of zinc gas with air.

A Study on the pyrolysis characteristics of sewage sludge by the temperature conditions (온도변화에 따른 하수슬러지의 열분해 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Pyrolysis of maize is experimentally investigated in bench-scale rotary kiln in semi-continuous operation. The operational parameters varied are the temperature($450{\sim}800^{\circ}C$), the solids residence time(7~20 min). Important parameters studied include the running time, water content of sewage sludge, solids amount of sewage sludge(TS%) by the varied temperature. Also, with the increasing of temperature, how the yield of oil and char product change was observed, and the distribution of gas production components was observed. The gas of $C_1{\sim}C_3$ yield increased and oil of $C4{\sim}C6$ yield decreased along with pyrolysis temperature of $670^{\circ}C$ by the run time of 9 min. The results showed the expected strong influence of pyrolysis temperature and a noticeable influence of running time.

  • The basic approach to sewage sludge is organic waste minimization, promotion of energy recovery; volume and weight reduction by final treatment, and environmentally final disposal of natural circulation. Dry and pyrolysis of maize was experimentally investigated in full-scale rotary kiln in semi-continuous operation. The operational parameters varied are the operating temperature $160{\sim}175^{\circ}C$ of dry and $450{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ of pyrolysis, the solids residence time 9 min for pyrolysis.   • The Low Temperature Thermal Desorption (LTTD) System equipped with a soil transfer unit, a rotary kiln, RTO, cyclones and a bag filter etc. was developed. The LTTD system was designed to be economically operated using LPG as a fuel and recirculating the discharged gas from the LTTD system through RTO. For the performance test of LTTD system the soil contaminated with light and heavy oils (2,690 mg TPH/kg soil) and with particle sizes below 50 mm was fed into the rotary kiln of LTTD system at 7$m^3$/hr with retention time of 15 minutes. Operation temperatures of LTTD system for the removal of soil TPH were $567^{\circ}C$ and $692^{\circ}C$. The residual TPH after treatment was 46 mg/kg and 32mg/kg respectively at each temperature condition, which shows high TPH removal efficiencies of the developed LTTD as 98.3% and 98.9%.

  • Chambers in a continuous furnace were designed. A chamber consists of inlets and outlets of nitrogen gas which is used to discharge burned gas and heating pipes (HP) which are used to keep temperature of fired materials at $1,300^{\circ}C$. Design variables were numbers of inlets and outlets, distance between floor and lower HP ($h_1$), distance between lower HP and fired materials ($h_2$), distance between fired materials and upper HP ($h_3$), temperature of HP, numbers of HP and distance between HP. The numbers of inlets and outlets were determined so that nitrogen gas formed a laminar flow for efficient discharge. All other design variables were determined so that temperature of fired materials is as uniform as possible near $1,300^{\circ}C$. Chambers were produced and temperature was measured at 21 points using thermocouples. The largest deviation from $1,300^{\circ}C$ was less than ${\pm}2.2^{\circ}C$.

  • During the manufacturing of Portland cement, CO2 gas is also necessarily produced through both decarbonation of calcium carbonate and kiln burning. By partially replacing the Portland cement with limestone powder, which is an inert filler in a concrete mixture, CO2 consumption can be reduced in a construction field. This study is to investigate the fundamental durability characteristics of limestone powder added concrete. Experimental variable was the replacement ratio of limestone powder from 0% to 25% with 5% increment. Durability characteristics were investigated by resistance to freeze-thaw, alkali-silica reaction and de-icing chemical in addition to the properties of fresh concrete. From test results, it was observed that the addition of limestone powder did not significantly affect the resistance to freeze-thaw reaction and de-icing chemical. The addition of limestone powder reduced the occurrence potential of alkali-silica reaction by reducing an alkali content in Portland cement.

  • Synthesis of spinel pigment on ZnO-Fe2O3 system. The object of this research is the synthesis of new spinel pigments on the basic of ZnO-Fe2O3 system which was substituted by ZnO-Fe2O3 by MgO-Al2O3. This research was progressed by measuring the X-ray diffraction and the reflectances of the substitued ZnO-Fe2O3 group. Which was obtained by sintering at the temperature of 1,00$0^{\circ}C$, 1,10$0^{\circ}C$, 1,20$0^{\circ}C$ and 1,25$0^{\circ}C$ and them by regrinding. In order to coloring test, here basic compositions of Barium glaze, Zinc glaze, Lime glaze, Lead glaze and Talc glaze used in this experiment are obtained from the ceramic work. Adding synthetic stains in these basic glazes with 3%, mixing and glazing on the specimen. The specimens was fired at 1,28$0^{\circ}C$ in reducing and oxidizing atmosphere in the gas kiln. The results of the research as follow. 1. Many kinds of spinel pigment was produced on ZnO-Fe2O3 system that is to say, not always only spinel. 2. Spinel peak was observed strongly on the ZnO-Fe2O3 system withsubstituting by MgO-Fe2O3 and MgO-Al2O3 group(the ratio of MgO, Al2O3 being increased, observed more strongly). 3. The most effective temperature ranges was 1,20$0^{\circ}C$~1,25$0^{\circ}C$. 4. The color of spinel pigments on this system was observed by "stable YR". 5. It was yellow red in oxidizing and green in reducing atmosphere on the coloring test.ring test.

  • In these proceedings, we will address the problem of air pollution on the premises of the Cement factory SHARRCEM L.L.C. in Hani Elezit in the Republic of Kosovo respectively around the clinker cooler, rotary kiln, and raw material mill. By air pollution, we mean the introduction of chemicals, particles, or other harmful materials into the atmosphere which in one way or another causing damage to the development of plants and organisms. Air pollution occurs when certain substances are released into the air, which depending on the quantitative level, can be harmful to human health, animals, and the environment in general. The analysis of air shows the influence of the extractive and processing industry on the chemical composition of air. Parameters analyzed though under control such as the case of carbon dioxide, due to the increasing production capacity of cement, the production of hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of CO2 gas made CO2 production a concern. With the purchase of the latest technology by the SHARCEM Factory in Hani Elezit, the amount of air pollution has been reduced and the allowed parameters of environmental pollution have been kept under control. Air pollutants are introduced into the atmosphere from various sources which change the composition of the atmosphere and affect the biotic environment.The concentration of air pollutants depends not only on the quantities that are emitted from the sources of air pollution but also on the ability of the atmosphere to absorb or disperse these emissions. Sources of air pollutants include vehicles, industry, indoor sources, and natural resources. There are some natural pollutants, such as natural fog, particles from volcanic eruptions, pollen grains, bacteria, and so on.

A Study on the Reduction of $CO_2$ Emission by the Application of Clean Technology in the Cement Industry (시멘트산업공정에서의 $CO_2$배출량 저감을 위한 청정기술 적용에 관한 연구)

  • The feasibility of clean technology to minimize the $CO_2$ emission by recycling and reuse the waste materials and energy have been studied for the cement industry. A life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed for an alternative raw material-supply method to use the molted slag as the major raw material in the cement clinker manufacturing. Using this new method, a 60% of $CO_2$ could be reduced that comes out during the decarboxylation from the cement rotary kiln. The energy-efficiency improvement and the alternative energy methods that had been determined in our previous study through the environmental assessment of cement industry were applied to the study for the reduction of $CO_2$ emission. The natural gas, one of the fossil fuels, was also used as the first choice to get the result at the earliest time by the most economic and the most efficient green technology and to switch into the carbon neutral energy consumption pattern.
