  • The present study has been carried out to analyze the flow characteristics in the inlet expasion duct of a heat recovery steam generator by using numerical flow analysis. The inlet of HRSG corresponds the outlet of gas turbine exit and the flow after gas turbine has strong swirl flow and turbulence. The inlet flow condition of HRSG should be included the exit flow characteristics of gas turbine. The present numerical analysis adopted the flow analysis result of gas turbine exit flow as a inlet flow condition of HRSG analysis. Because the flow characteristics in the inlet duct of the tube bank is strongly related to the performance of a HRSG, it is most important for the optimal design of HGSG to understanding the flow phenomena in the inlet duct of HRSG. From the present study, the position of breakpoint in the inlet expansion duct should be lower than the reference breakpoint position for the optimal flow uniformity before the tube bank.

  • The change of flue gas residence time with the location of air inlet in an incinerator is analysed. An independent numerical variable is the location of air inlet and dependant is the residence time of flue gas. The mean value of turbulence energy in a primary combustion chamber is also analysed. The flow field and the distribution of turbulence energy are investigated to evaluate their influence on the residence time of flue gas and the turbulence energy. As the position of secondary air inlet approaches to the top of primary combustion chamber, the residence time of gas and the turbulence energy become longer and larger respectively.

  • Fluid model based numerical analysis is done to simulate a low damage etch back system for 20 nm scale semiconductor fabrication. Etch back should be done conformally with very high material selectivity. One possible mechanism is three steps: reactive radical generation, adsorption and thermal desorption. In this study, plasma generation and transport steps are analyzed by a commercial plasma modeling software package, CFD-ACE+. Ar + $CF_4$ ICP was used as a model and the effect of reactive gas inlet position was investigated in 2D and 3D. At 200~300 mTorr of gas pressure, separated gas inlet scheme is analyzed to work well and generated higher density of F and $F_2$ radicals in the lower chamber region while suppressing ions reach to the wafer by a double layer conducting barrier.

  • Diverging channel from gas burner exit to the inlet section of Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) has been re-designed for 1 MW steam supply and power generation system. Three different test geometries have been chosen for the numerical simulation. The existing design for 300 kW HRSG system (CASE B) has been improved by geometry and position changes of inlet guide vanes along with gas velocity entrance angle at the diverging channel inlet (CASE C). Both cases has been compared with the case where hot combustion gas is directly injected without any guide vanes (CASE A). Improved design shows overall uniform velocity and temperature distribution compared to existing design.

  • A numerical investigation of a catalytically stabilized thermal (CST) combustor was conducted for a multi-channel catalyst bed, and both the catalyst bed and thermal combustor were simultaneously modeled. The numerical model handled the coupling of the surface and gas reaction in the catalyst bed as well as the gas reaction in the thermal combustor. The behavior of the catalyst bed was investigated at a variety of operating conditions, and location of the flame in the CST combustor was investigated via an analysis of the distribution of CO concentration. Through parametric analyses of the flame position, it was possible to derive a criterion to determine whether the flame is present in the catalyst bed or the thermal combustor for a given inlet condition. The results showed that the maximum inlet temperature at which the flame is located in the thermal combustor increased with increasing inlet velocity.

  • A MILD(Moderate and Intense Low oxygen Dilution) combustion, which is effective in the reduction of NOx, is considerably affected by the recirculation flow position of hot exhaust gas to the combustion furnace. A numerical analysis was accomplished to elucidate the flow characteristics in the MILD combustion incinerator for several cases with or without exhaust gas recirculation. It could be seen from the result of the present numerical study that the flow recirculation could be observed in the upper region over the vertical dividing wall for the case without exhaust gas recirculation. The optimal position of exhaust gas recirculation position was derived by the comparison of %RMS of x directional velocity for the cases with exhaust gas recirculation. The case with the exhaust gas recirculation position at the upper right of free board was the most effective with the smallest value of 57.4% RMS.

  • Diesel particulate filter has been adopted in new vehicle with diesel engine. Since the flow of exhaust gas was clogged as particulate matters were deposited in the filter, it have bad effects on a fuel consumption and power. It was investigated that a particulate filtering system with vacuum pump in the exhaust gas line could be free from clogging in previous research. In this study, the effects of water injection and position of inlet port in filtering system on reducing in particulate matter were investigated. It was noticed that particulate matter were decreased remarkable by water injection and moving the position of inlet port.

  • An experimental study of the air flow through inlet pipe of reciprocating two-cycle engine was investigated under motored condition. Measurements of the two components of velocity, velocity fluctuation, and the other behavior of inlet flow have been obtained by laser Doppler anemometer system. The research engine comprised the cylinder head of a two-cycle engine which mounted on optical spacer with measuring window and glass inlet entry for laser anemometer measurement. A dual beam laser Doppler anemometer was used with conventional forward scattered method and comprised argon-ion laser, frequency shifter with Bragg cell module, and the signal processor. Measurements of mean velocity fluctuation of inlet flow for different engine speeds, measuring positions, and the changes in cylinder volume are investigated. The results presented show that the changes in engine speed is shown to be strongly influenced on the mean velocity of inlet air. The effect of measuring position and cylinder volume on the inlet velocity was also investigated for the inlet port entry and is shown to be small compared to the engine speed.

  • The working fluid from the combustor to the turbine stage of a gas turbine makes various boundary layer thickness. Since the inlet boundary layer thickness is one of the important factors that affect the turbine efficiency. It is necessary to investigate secondary flow and loss with various boundary layer thickness conditions. In the present study, the effect of various inlet boundary layer thickness on secondary flow and loss and the proper height of the boundary layer fences for various boundary layer thickness were investigated. Measurements of secondary flow velocity and total pressure loss within and downstream of the passage were taken under 5 boundary layer thickness conditions, 16, 36, 52, 69, 110mm. It was found that total pressure loss and secondary flow areas were increased with increase of thickness but they were maintained almost at the same position. At the fellowing research about the boundary layer fences, 1/6, 1/3, 1/2 of each inlet boundary layer thickness and 12mm were used as the fence heights. As a result, it was observed that the proper height of the fences was generally constant since the passage vortex remained almost at the same position. Therefore once the geometry of a cascade is decided, the location of the Passage vortex and the proper fence height are appeared to be determined at the same time. When the inlet boundary layer thickness is relatively small, the loss caused by the proper fence becomes bigger than endwall loss so that it dominates secondary loss. In these cases the proper fence hight is decided not by the cascade geometry but by the inlet boundary layer thickness as previous investigations.
