  • Gas hydrates are crystalline solids composed of water and gas molecules. Water molecules are linked through hydrogen bonding and create cavities(host lattice) that can capture a large variety of guest molecules under appropriate conditions, generally high pressure and low temperature. Recently, many researchers try to apply gas hydrates to industrial processes to capture greenhouse gases due to the facts that the process is eco-friendly and target gas molecules can be preferentially captured. In this paper, we introduced recent studies on $CO_2$ and $CO_2-N_2$ mixture hydrates to evaluate the feasibility of industrial application of gas hydrate technology to $CO_2$ capture process. Specifically, we put emphasis on the technical feasibility of $CO_2$ separation in steel industry using gas hydrate formation principles.

  • Alumina hydrates were prepared by the neutralization of AlCl3.6H2O solution with NH3 gas diluted with N2 gas. The values of pH in reaction solution influenced the formation of alumina hydrates minerals. Amorphous alumina hydrates, for example, were formed at ${\gamma}$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\delta$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\theta$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\alpha$-Al2O3. (2) Bayeritelongrightarrowamorphouslongrightarrow${\gamma}$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\delta$-Al2O3longrightarrowη-Al2O3longrightarrow$\theta$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\alpha$-Al2O3. On the other hand, the shape of alumina hydrates whichw ere prepared by the reacton of Al2(SO4)3.16H2O solution and NH3 gas was spherical, the progress of its phase transformation with increasing temperature was amorphouslongrightarrow${\gamma}$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\alpha$Al2O3 in sequence.

  • Methane Hydrates or Natural Gas Hydrates (hereinafter NGH) are solid-state energy source formed by the clathration of methane gas in water molecules at low temperature and high pressure. NGH is also known as "burning ice" because of its burning property and appearance similar to that of dry ice. Today, concerns about the NGH are rising as an environment-friendly energy source that can replace fossil fuels. In this paper, to keep pace with the research and development of the NGH, the properties of the NGH and the general features of NGH carriers are introduced.

  • Geophysical survey has been conducted on the continental margin off the South Shetland Islands aboard R/V Onnuri of KORDI in 1992/1993. About 800-line km of 96-channel reflection data have been acquired. On the seismic section, BSR with strong reflectivity and negative polarity has been found at 700 ms below the sea bottom. BSR is considered as the base of gas hydrates and AVO analysis was performed to study physical properties along BSR. True amplitude recovery and surface consistence amplitude were applied to seismic data and angle gathers were obtained. AVO gradient and AVO intercept are calculated on every CDP gather. Section of AVO intercept show strong reflectivity and negative polarity on BSRs and stronger continuity of BSR than stacked section. Cross plot of P-G indicates that the lower layer below BSR is filled with free gas.

  • Gas hydrates are known to form by physical interactions between host water and guest gas molecules and thus can be treated as a special type of icy materials. The gas hydrates are recently highlighted because of their use to future energy source even though they were discovered naturally in the deep-sea marine sediments a long time ago. However, the present and future urgent task is to develop the efficient and safe production technology for recovering methane from gas hydrates. Here, we propose one of potential recovery processes using swapping phenomenon occurring between gaseous carbon dioxide and methane hydrate deposits. Such a swapping process provide several technological and economical advantages over conventional processes. The carbon dioxide can be directly sequestered into methane hydrate layer and simultaneously methane can be produced with a high recovery rate more than 90%. In addition, the icy powders can be effectively used as a new medium for storing hydrogen. To increase hydrogen storage capacity the icy hydrate networks need to be redesigned to create the more empty cages in which hydrogen gas can be enclathrated. Functionalized icy materials might be used in a variety of energy and environmental fields.

  • Piston cores retrieved from the western Ulleung Basin, East Sea were analyzed to examine the potential for hydrocarbon generation and to determine the hydrocarbon indicators. 2D multi-channel reflection seismic and Chirp data were also investigated for mapping and characterizing the geophysical hydrocarbon indicators such as BSR (bottom simulating reflector), blank zone, pock-mark etc. High organic carbon contents and sedimentation rates that suggest good condition for hydrocarbon generation. High pressure and low temperature condition, and high residual hydrocarbon concentrations are favor the formation of natural gas hydrate. In the piston cores, cracks generally oriented to bedding may indicate the gas expansion. The seismic data show several BSRs that are associated with natural gas hydrates and underlying free gas. A number of vertical to sub-vertical blank zones were well identified in the seismic sections. They often show the seismic pull-up structures, probably indicating the presence of high velocity hydrates. Numerous pockmarks were also observed in the Chirp profiles. They may indicate the presence of free gas below the hydrate stability zone as well.

  • Thermodynamic measurements were performed to show the possibility of recovering $CO_2$ from fuel gas (the mixture of $CO_2$ and $H_2$) by forming gas hydrates with water where water was dispersed in the pores of silica gel particles having nominal 100 nm of pore diameter. The hydrate-phase equilibria for the ternary $CO_2+H_2$+water in pores were measured and $CO_2$ concentrations in vapor and hydrate phase were determined under the hydrate-vapor two phase region at constant 274.15 K. It was shown that the inhibition effect appeared due to silica gel pores, and the corresponding equilibrium dissociation pressures became higher than those of bulk water hydrates at a specific temperature. In addition, direct measurement of $CO_2$ content in the hydrate phase showed that the retrieved gas from the dissociation of hydrate contained more than 95 mol% of $CO_2$ when 42 mol% of $CO_2$ and balanced Hz mixture was applied. Compared with data obtained in case of bulk water hydrates, which showed just 83 mol% of $CO_2$ where 2-stage hydrate slurry reactor was intended to utilize this property, the hydrate formation in porous silica gel has enhanced the feasibility of $CO_2$ separation process. Hydrate formation as not for slurry but solid particle makes it possible to used fixed bed reactor, and can be a merit of well-understood technologies in the industrial field.

  • Methane hydrate is ice-like solid compound consisting of mainly methane and water, and is stable under specific low temperature and high pressure conditions (HSZ : methane hydrate stability zone) that occurs in permafrost regions and in the ocean floor sediments. Geophysical survey was implemented in the southern area of the East Sea, and the HSZ of the study area is determined by the temperature, pressure and local heat flow obtained from the survey and well data. In the study area, methane hydrates could exist in the sediments below the water depths of about $300{\cal}m$, and the base of HSZ is about 600m beneath the seafloor. The acoustically blanking zones in the sediment and phenomena of gas seepage were detected from the seismic section. These sediments have the sufficient physical condition for the formation of methane hydrate. The temperature and pressure conditions were experimentally measured for the dissociation of methane and propane hydrates in Pure water. Equilibrium conditions of methane and propane hydrates were obtained in the pressure range up to 19050Kpa and 401.3Kpa. Under same temperature condition, propane hydrate was dissociated at lower pressure than that of methane hydrate.

  • Structure-II hydrate has been highlighted due to its higher gas storage capacity and favorable thermodynamic conditions. In this study, we introduce a new structure-II hydrate former, tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) and confirm the structural characteristics through High-Resolution Powder Diffraction (HRPD), $^{13}C$ solide-state NMR and Ramanspectroscopy. Here,we also investigated the thermodynamic stability of binary(TBHP+gaseous) clathrate hydrates. The experimental data were generated using an isochoric pressure-search method. The dissociation data for (TBHP +gaseous) clathrate hydrates are compared with the other hydrocarbon hydrate and pure gaseous hydrate.
