  • Ship owners had pursued higher benefits by demanding the new design and construction of ships with higher operational efficiency. There was a necessity for shipyards to suggest a more economical design and advanced operation concept in order to meet the demands. Especially, since BOG combustion and activation of the re-liquefaction unit had to be taken into account in ship design in addition to fuel oil and gas consumption, the evaluation of the operating efficiency considering the technological trends was necessary. In this paper, it was aimed to study the design philosophy and operation strategy by considering the effect of fuel oil and gas consumption, BOG combustion, and activation of the re-liquefaction unit on the operating cost for laden voyage according to ship speed, BOR, and activation of the re-liquefaction unit. For this purpose, the costs were acquired by conducting the sailing simulation of an LNGC based on a mathematical model including the maneuvering equations of motion. The design philosophy and operation strategy was reviewed in terms of the operating cost.

  • A novel pyrolysis-melting incineration system of reduced scale (30 kg/hr) is and constructed in Korea Institute of Industrial Technology. The incineration process is composed of three parts: pyrolysis, gas combustion and ash melting processes. For each unit process, experimental and numerical approaches including reduced-scale cold/hot flow tests have been conducted to find optimal design and operating conditions. This paper presents major results of these approaches with brief descriptions on the pilot-scale incinerator (200 kg/hr) under construction and future research works.

  • This study was performed to investigate the performance of heat recovery device attached to exhaust gas flue connected to combustion chamber of greenhouse heating system. The experimental heat recovery system is mainly consisted of LPG combustion chamber and two heat recovery units; unit-A is attached directly to the exhaust gas flue, and unit-B is connected with unit-A. Heat recovery performance was evaluated by estimating total energy amounts by using enthalpy difference between two measurement points together with mass flow rate of gas and/or air passing through each heat recovery unit depending on 5 different flow rates controlled by voltage meter. The results of this experimental study, such as heat exchange behavior of supply air tubes and exhaust air passages crossing the tubes, pressure drop between inlet and outlet, heat recovery performance of exchange unit, etc., will be used as fundamental data for designing optimum heat recovery device to be used for fuel saving purpose by reducing heat loss amounts mostly wasted outside of greenhouse through flue.

  • In this paper, performance of the gas turbine combined cycle(GTCC) using pre-combustion carbon capture technology was comparatively analysed. Steam reforming and autothermal reforming were used. In the latter, two different methods were adopted to supply oxygen for the reforming process. One is to extract air form gas turbine compressor (air blowing) and the other is to supply oxygen directly from air separation unit ($O_2$ blowing). To separate $CO_2$ from the reformed gas, the chemical absorption system using MEA solution was used. The net cycle efficiency of the system adopting $O_2$ blown autothermal reforming was higher than the other two systems. The system using air blown autothermal reforming exhibited the largest net cycle power output. In addition to the performance analysis, the influence of fuel reforming and carbon capture on the operating condition of the gas turbine and the necessity of turbine re-design were investigated.

  • The development of numerical mathematical model to calculate both the static and dynamic characteristics of a multi-shaft gas turbine consisting of a single combustion chamber, including advanced cycle components such as intercooler and regenerator is presented in this paper. The numerical mathematical model is based on the simplified assumptions that quasi-static characteristic of turbo-machine and injector is used, total pressure loss and heat transfer relation for static calculation neglecting fuel transport time delay can be employed. The supercharger power has a cubical relation to its rotating velocity. The accuracy of each calculation is confirmed by monitoring mass and energy balances with comparative calculations for different time steps of integration. The features of the studied gas turbine scheme are the starting device with compressed air volumes and injector's supercharging the air directly ahead of the combustion chamber.

  • In this paper, the integration issue, such as an air-side integration design between the gas turbine and air separation unit, is described and analyzed by the exergy and energy balance of the combined-cycle power block in an IGCC power plant. The results showed that the net power of the system was almost same, but that of the gas turbine was decreased as the integration degree increased. The highest exergy loss was occurred in the combustor of gas turbine, which was affected by the chemical reaction, heat conduction, mass diffusion, and viscous dissipation.
