  • The purpose of this study is to report the effect of combined acupuncture treatment on acute ankle sprain patients. The subjects included in this study were 15 acute ankle sprain patients who visited Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine from Oct. 15th, 2012 to Feb. 8th, 2013. We treated 15 patients with combined acupuncture treatment. The treatment consisted of Hwangrunhaedok-tang (Huanglianjiedutang) pharmacupuncture, electroacupuncture (applied to GB39, ST36 on the affected side), acupuncture (applied to TE17, SI6 on the unaffected side with Dong-Qi therapy). To assess the effect of treatment, the numeric rating scale (NRS) was applied before and after treatment. After first combined acupuncture treatment, the NRS scores significantly decreased from $8.33{\pm}0.94$ to $2.26{\pm}0.44$ (p<0.01). We suggested that Combined acupuncture treatment are effective and useful on acute ankle sprain. And, further studies will be needed.

Methods: The patient was treated from July 9th, 2014 to August 7th, 2014. He was taking Saenggangeonbi-tang (生肝建脾湯) during the treatment period. He also undertook regular exercise and regulated his diet to reduce body weight. Results: The patient’s AST, ALT, and GGT levels were significantly decreased. Total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL levels were also decreased, and HDL level was increased. His body weight and body mass index (BMI) were decreased. Conclusions: The results suggest that Saenggangeonbi-tang with exercise and regulated diet could be an effective treatment for adolescent NAFLD with obesity in clinics.

  • Objectives: In the case of a diabetic patient diagnosed with lumbar burst fracture, we aim to present effective results in terms of pain management and blood glucose level stabilization. Methods: A patient was given combined traditional Korean medicine therapy, such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, and antidiabetic medications, during a hospitalization period. We measured the state and progress of this case with the NRS (Numeric Rating Scale) and ODI/NDI (Oswestry/Neck Disability Index). We also checked blood glucose levels regularly. Results: After treatment, the patient's pain was controlled, and the NRS score was decreased. Not only were the overall symptoms of the patient improved positively but the ODI/NDI scores were also improved. Blood glucose level was stabilized. Conclusions: One case of a diabetic patient diagnosed with lumbar burst fracture showed improvement of ODI, NDI, and NRS scores for back and neck pain. Further, the blood glucose level was stabilized.

  • Objective: This study is designed to evaluate the effects of Korean medicine treatment for facial nerve palsy. Method: The patient was administered Korean medicine treatment, including acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and herbal medicine. We used the House-Brackmann Grading System and Yanagihara's Unweighted Grading System to assess the symptoms of facial nerve palsy. Results: The patient's House-Brackmann grade was reduced from grade IV to grade II, and Yanagihara's grade was increased from 19 to 32. The patient's symptoms, which were facial pain, facial asymmetry, reduced wrinkling forehead, incomplete closing eye, epiphora, and tinnitus, improved during the hospitalization. Conclusion: This study shows that Korean medicine treatment may be an effective treatment for facial nerve palsy.

Several different treatments have emerged in recent times. This case will report on traditional Korean medicine patients who suffer from multiple pain and physical disorders when fibromyalgia is suspected. Method: During a hospitalization period, a patient was given a combination of traditional Korean medicine therapy (such as herbal medicine and acupuncture) and analgesic drugs. We measured the state and progress of this case using Numeric rating scale and EuroQol-5D. Results: After the treatments, the patient's pain was controlled and the NRS score decreased. The overall symptoms of the patient and the EQ-5D both improved positively. Conclusion: Traditional Korean medicine treatment helps to relieve the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

  • Objective: Facial nerve palsy is caused by damage to the 7th cranial nerve. It is the main symptom of facial muscle paralysis on the affected side. Usually, recovery from this disease begins 2-3 weeks after onset and most patients recover in 4-8 weeks. If the patients cannot receive proper treatment, severe permanent impairments, both physical and mental, may remain, so this disease should be treated appropriately. In this study, a patient with facial nerve palsy was admitted to the Korean medicine hospital for treatment. We report on the patient's progress and the effects of treatment. Methods: We cured the patient with herbal medicines, acupuncture, herbal acupuncture therapy, and physical therapy. We used a numerical rating scale, the House Brackmann grading system, and a weighted regional grading system to assess symptom changes. Result: The patient with facial nerve palsy was hospitalized for 23 days and recovered from symptoms without significant problems on the face or in motor function.
