This study was conducted to evaluate the combined effect of gamma irradiation and silk peptide on the radiosensitivity of bacteria and the storage stability of ready-to-eat hamburger patty. The $D_{10}$ values obtained for Escherichia coli, Listeria ivanovii, Salmonella typhimurium and Clostridium sporogenes by gamma irradiation were 0.25, 0.50, 0.55 and 1.35 kGy, respectively. The inactivation rate of S. typhimurium ($D_{10}=0.53kGy$) inoculated into hamburger patty with 5%(w/w) silk peptide was reduced 6% compared with the control $D_{10}=0.558kGy$). In acceleration storage at $30^{\circ}C$, microorganisms were not observed in samples irradiated with 7 kGy or 10 kGy during storage. However the irradiation at 5 kGy was insufficient to sterilize the contaminated microorganisms in hamburger patty regardless of the addition of silk peptide (5%). These results indicate that the combined treatment of gamma-irradiation and silk peptide admixture could be helpful to ensure storage stability of ready-to-eat hamburger patty, by controlling the preliminary microbial load.
Postharvest diseases cause losses in a wide variety of crops around the world. Irradiation, a useful nonchemical approach, has been used as an alternative treatment for fungicide to control plant fungal pathogens. For a preliminary study, ionizing radiations (gamma, X-ray, or e-beam irradiation) were evaluated for their antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea, Penicillium expansum, and Rhizopus stolonifer through mycelial growth, spore germination, and morphological analysis under various conditions. Different fungi exhibited different radiosensitivity. The inhibition of fungal growth showed in a dose-dependent manner. Three fungal pathogens have greater sensitivity to the e-beam treatment compared to gamma or X-ray irradiations. The inactivation of individual fungal-viability to different irradiations can be considered between 3-4 kGy for B. cinerea and 1-2 kGy for P. expansum and R. stolonifer based on the radiosensitive and radio-resistant species, respectively. These preliminary data will provide critical information to control postharvest diseases through radiation.
We fabricated a 15 m long position-sensitive plastic scintillation optical fiber (PSOF) detector consisting of a PSOF, two photomultiplier tubes, four fast amplifiers, and a digitizer. A single PSOF was used as a sensing part to estimate the gamma-ray source position, and 137Cs, an uncollimated solid-disk-type radioactive isotope, was used as a gamma-ray emitter. To improve the sensitivity, accuracy, and measurement time of a PSOF detector compared to those of previous studies, the performance of the amplifier was optimized, and the digital signal processing (DSP) was newly designed in this study. Moreover, we could measure very low dose rates of gamma-rays with high sensitivity and accuracy in a very short time using our proposed PSOF detector. The results of this study indicate that it is possible to accurately and quickly locate the position of a very low dose rate gamma-ray source in a wide range of contaminated areas using the proposed position-sensitive PSOF detector.

This study was conducted to investigate the adequate irradiation dose to eliminate harmful fungi inoculated if beef jerky with a 10% higher moisture content and improved textural property. Aspergillus flavus (approximately $10^6\;CFU/cm^2$) was tested in broth, spore suspension, and inoculated jerky. $D_{10}$ values of A. flavus were 0.36 kGy in the broth and suspension, and 0.47 kGy in the jerky. The results indicate that gamma irradiation can be effectively used to control the fungus growth in beef jerky with an improved quality and higher moisture content.

A sensitivity analysis of the methods used to evaluate the transport properties of a CdZnTe detector was performed using two different radiations (${\alpha}$ particle and gamma-ray) emitted from an $^{241}Am$ source. The mobility-lifetime products of the electron-hole pair in a planar CZT detector ($5{\times}5{\times}2\;mm^3$) were determined by fitting the peak position as a function of biased voltage data to the Hecht equation. To verify the accuracy of these products derived from ${\alpha}$ particles and low-energy gamma-rays, an energy spectrum considering the transport property of the CZT detector was simulated through a combination of the deposited energy and the charge collection efficiency at a specific position. It was found that the shaping time of the amplifier module significantly affects the determination of the (${\mu}{\tau}$) products; the ${\alpha}$ particle method was stabilized with an increase in the shaping time and was less sensitive to this change compared to when the gamma-ray method was used. In the case of the simulated energy spectrum with transport properties evaluated by the ${\alpha}$ particle method, the peak position and tail were slightly different from the measured result, whereas the energy spectrum derived from the low-energy gamma-ray was in good agreement with the experimental results. From these results, it was confirmed that low-energy gamma-rays are more useful when seeking to obtain the transport properties of carriers than ${\alpha}$ particles because the methods that use gamma-rays are less influenced by the surface condition of the CZT detector. Furthermore, the analysis system employed in this study, which was configured by a combination of Monte Carlo simulation and the Hecht model, is expected to be highly applicable to the study of the characteristics of CZT detectors.
The $HgI_2$ single crystal which can be used for the ${\gamma}-ray$ detector at room temperature was grown by Temperature Oscillation Method. The low temperature photoluminescence, specific resistivity and trap concentration of $HgI_2$ single crystal were investigated. Three main luminescence bands were observed at 2.30eV, 2.20eV and 2.00eV at 20K, related to the excitons, I-vacancies and impurities, respectively. The specific resistivity and trap concentration of $HgI_2$ single crystal were $10^{11}{\Omega}\;cm\;and\;1.8{\times}10^{14}/cm^3$ at room temperature, respectively. Also the radiation detecting system was deviced by $HgI_2$${\gamma}-ray$ detector, one chip microprocessor, LCD module and personal computer. The prepared $HgI_2$${\gamma}-ray$ detector showed a good linearity of ${\gamma}-radiation$ dose for standard ${\gamma}-ray$.
A coded-aperture gamma camera was developed to increase the sensitivity of a pin hole camera made with a pixellated CsI(Tl) scintillator and a position-sensitive photomultiplier tube. The modified round-hole uniformly redundant array of pixel size $13{\times}11$ was chosen as a coded mask considering the detector spatial resolution. The performance of the coded-aperture camera was compared with the pin hole camera using various forms of Tc-99m source to see the improvement of signal-to-noise ratio or the improvement of the sensitivity. The image quality is much improved despite of a slight degradation of the spatial resolution. Though the camera and the test were made for low energy case, but the concept of the coded-aperture gamma camera could be effectively used for the radioactive environmental monitoring and other applications.

The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of ${\gamma}$-radiation alone or combined with a cytotoxic drug, simvastatin, on viability and cell cycling of a myeloma cell line. P3NS1 myeloma cells were treated with the selected dose of simvastatin ($0.1{\mu}M/l$) 24 hours prior to ${\gamma}$-irradiation (0.25, 0.5 and 1Gy). The cell viability, induction of apoptosis, cell death, cell cycling, generation of ROS, and expression of P53, Bax, Bcl2, caspase3, PARP1 and Fas genes were estimated. The results indicated that simvastatin ($0.1{\mu}M/l$) treatment for 24 hours prior to ${\gamma}$-irradiation increased cell death to 37.5% as compared to 4.81% by radiation (0.5Gy) alone. It was found that simvastatin treatment before irradiation caused arrest of cells in G0/G1 and G2/M phases as assessed using flow cytometry. Interestingly, simvastatin treatment of P3NS1 cells increased the intracellular ROS production and decreased antioxidant enzyme activity with increased P53, Bax and Caspase3 gene expression while that of Bcl2 was decreased. Consequently, our results indicated that pre-treatment with simvastatin increased radio sensitivity of myeloma tumor cells in addition to apoptotic effects through an intrinsic mitochondrial pathway.
This study was aimed to select useful mutants of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) and leaf mustard (Brassica juncea L.), the seeds of three lines S-14, S-27, and S-28 were treated with gamma-ray and EMS. The optimum ranges of gamma-ray dose and EMS concentration to enlarge the characteristic morphological variations were also separately investigated. The survival rates of S-28 only linearly decreased with increasing the gamma-ray dose. The overall growth parameters decreased of gamma-ray dose in all three lines of S-14, S-27, and S-28. The reduction dosage 50 of gamma-ray was identified as 1,200 Gy for S-14 leaf mustard, while those of S-27 and S-28 rapeseed lines were appeared as same 1,000 Gy. The emergence rates of S-14 and S-27 showed no significant differences by EMS treatment, while the growth of all three lines were significantly decreased. The reduction concentration 50 in S-14 could not be determined, demonstrating that this leaf mustard line is presumably insensitive to mutagenic EMS, while those in S-27 and S-28 were identified as 3.0 and 2.5%, respectively, showing that these rapeseed lines possess higher sensitivity to EMS than S-14. Various morphological characteristics of $M_1$ generation obtained from mutagen treatment were elaborately investigated for further maintenance of $M_2$ generation. In $M_2$ generation variants showing short stem, yellow color in seed coat, chlorophyll deficiencies in leaf or pod, abnormal flower color were selected as potentially useful mutants for breeding.
Antifungal bacterium, Bacillus subtilis YS1 was isolated from Yusong hot spring showed broad antifungal spectrum against 12 kinds of plant pathogenic fungi and Candida albicans, animal pathogen. From the gamma($Co^{60}$) radiation sensitivity test, $D_10$ value was 2.08 kGy and it survived above 20 kGy of radiation dose. Several mutants were induced by gamma radiation. Among them, YS1-1009 mutant showed resistance against tebuconazole of herbicide, increased activity against Botryoshaeria dothidea and ligninase activity. YS67 mutant was antifungal deficient auxotrophic mutants(trp-pro-or arg-ura-). From this results, it suggested that gamma irradiation could be useful method for mutant induction.
