The major purpose of the present study is to evaluate the performance of various galvanized (GI) or galvannealed (GA) mild steels and AHSS in stamping applications. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of selected stamping operations was conducted to estimate the critical pressure boundary conditions that exist in practice. Using this information, laboratory tribotests, e.g. Twist Compression (TCT), Deep Drawing (DDT) and Strip Drawing (SDT) Tests, were developed to evaluate the performance of selected lubricants and die materials/coatings in forming galvanized steels of interest. The sheet materials investigated included mild steels and AHSS (e.g. DP600 GI/GA, DP780 GI/GA, TRIP780 GA and DP980 GI/GA). Experimental results showed that galvanized material resulted in more galling, while galvannealed material showed more powdering and flaking. The surface roughness and chemical composition of galvanized sheet materials affected the severity of galling under the same testing conditions, i.e. lubricants and die materials/coatings. The results of this study helped to determine the critical interface pressure that initiates lubricant failure and galling in stamping selected galvanized sheet materials. Thus, to prevent or postpone the critical interface conditions, the results of this study can be used to select the optimum combination of galvanized sheet, die material, die coating and lubricant for forming structural automotive components.
Effects of spangle size and crystallographic characteristics on the surface appearance, galling properties, and adhesive strength of hot-dip galvanized steel sheets have been investigated. Both spangle size and crystallographic orientation measured by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were identified as critical factors influencing the galvanized coating performance. By decreasing the spangle size, surface appearance and galling properties related to the friction coefficient were significantly improved. However, low temperature adhesive-strength with small spangle galvanized steel sheets showed lower values compared to commercially used galvanized coating. The variation of adhesive strength in terms of spangle size has been clarified.
Bend test for metallic materials was conducted on samples of galvanized steel pipes being used in greenhouse farms. A secular change of yield strength for galvanized steel pipes was analyzed with the part of buried in the ground and exposed in the atmosphere. From those experimental results and corrosion rate of galvanized film, the standard durable years for pipe framed greenhouses are estimated that the small sized pipe houses of movable type is 7∼8 years and the large sized pipe houses of fixed type is 14∼15 years.
A reaction and evaporation types of cerium based conversion coatings were developed for galvanized steel sheet. The corrosion loss Q(Cb/cm2) and protection efficiency P(%) were obtained using a polarization technique for cerium based conversion coatings on galvanized steel exposed to 0.5N NaCl for 7 days. The microstructure of coating layer was observed using SEM. An excellent corrosion reistnce of galvanized steel was obtained by two types of cerium basd conversion coating. Salt spray test was done to evaluate the corrosion resistance of three samples by visual inspection. The corrosion ranking of three samples-untreated and two treatedby electrochemical data was matched well with the results of salt spray test.
The skinpassing conditions such as roll type, roll force and roll roughness of the work roll were evaluated to give the surface properties of the galvanized steel sheets that were required for automotive and to get rid of the surface defects that caused with the bad control of galvanized coating process parameters. The surface defects of the galvanized steel sheets such as the ripple mark and the scratch were completely removed as the roll force of SPM work roll was increased and the amount of the transfer of roll surface texture to the strip was also gained a lot. The image clarity of electro discharge textured (EDT) coated steel sheets before and after painting was higher than that of the bright (BRT) and shot blasted (SBT) coated steel sheets because of higher PPI value, lower waviness and uniform surface pattern. Since micro-craters transferred on the surface of the galvanized steel sheets played a role of nucleation sites of chromate reaction, Increase of micro-craters was bring to better corrosion resistance with the increase of the roll force and the use of EDT roll at the skin pass mill.
Atmospheric corrosion is generally an electrochemical degradation process of metal. It can be caused by various corrosion factors of atmospheric component, weather, and air pollutants. Moisture, particles of sea salts, and sulfur dioxide are major factors in atmospheric corrosion. Galvanizing coating is one of the most efficient ways to protect iron from corrosion by zinc plating on the surface of the iron. Galvanized steels are being widely used in automobiles, building structures, roofing, and other industrial structures due to their high corrosion resistance compared to bare iron. Atmospheric corrosion of galvanized steel has shown complex corrosion behavior depending on coating process, coating thickness, atmospheric environment, and air pollutants. In addition, different types and kinds of corrosion products can be produced depending on the environment. Lifespan of galvanized steels is also affected by the environment. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the corrosion behavior of galvanized steel under atmospheric corrosion at six locations in Korea. When the exposure time was increased, content of zinc from GA surface decreased while contents of iron and oxygen tended to increase. On the other hand, content of iron was constant even after 36 months of exposure of GI.
Recently, application of arc welding to galvanized carbon steel sheet is on the increasing Ould in the fields of automobile and construction industries. In arc welding process, zinc is evaporated in weld pool, even under the appropriate welding condition and produce blowhole and/or pit. Zinc gas cause instability of arc and increase spatter and fume. This research is purposed to minimize the heat-input and the formation of porosities in the welded joint of the galvanized carbon steel sheet using variable polarity AC wave pulse MIG welding system. An appropriate welding condition which showed low spatter and good bead appearance was acquired by applying the AC pulse MIG welding machine to DC duplicated MIG welding with the solid wire. When oxygen gas was added to shield gas of MIG welding for galvanized steel sheet, arc length was increased and arc stability was improved. In the AC duplicated welding, the loss of galvanized layer was decreased as the amount of heat-input was decreased when the EN ratio was increased under the condition that average welding current was evenly set.
Recently, hot rolled galvanized steel is widely used in automotive parts. As the paradigm of the automotive market has changed from fossil fuel vehicle to electric vehicle, the automotive industry needs more high-strength steels to reduce weights of automobiles. However, because high-strength steel contains high solute carbon, it is expected to have a risk of stretcher-strain on the surface due to dislocation trapping by solute [C] and [N]. Generally, galvanized steel is supposed to pass through a furnace around the temperature of Zinc pot to increase material temperature. Otherwise, the inhibition layer could not be formed. However, solute carbon and nitrogen are volatile enough to move around the furnace temperature. Moreover, the ratio of ferrite phase and precipitated Fe3C can be variable, resulting in yield point elongation related to the stretcher strain. Furthermore, the quality of the galvanized surface can be affected by a high temperature of the furnace. Although a relatively hot rolled galvanizing line furnace has a lower temperature than an annealing line furnace, it can affect various quality aspects. In other words, this paper aims to determine how these phenomena appear concerning furnace temperature.
