Implementation of Optimizing Compiler for Bus-based VLIW Processors (버스기반의 VLIW형 프로세서를 위한 최적화 컴파일러 구현)

  • Modern microprocessors exploit instruction-level parallel processing to increase the performance. Especially VLIW processors supported by the parallelizing compiler are used more and more in specific applications such as high-end DSP and graphic processing. Bus-based VLIW architecture was proposed for these specific applications and it was designed to reduce the overhead of forwarding unit and the instruction width. In this paper, a optimizing scheduling compiler developed for the proposed bus-based VLIW processor is introduced. First, the method to model interconnections between buses and resource usage patterns is described. Then, on the basis of the modeling, machine-dependent optimization techniques such as bus-to-register promotion, copy coalescing and operand substitution were implemented. Optimization techniques for general-purpose VLIW microprocessors such as selective scheduling and enhanced pipelining scheduling(EPS) were also implemented. The experiment result shows about 20% performance gain for multimedia application benchmarks.

Beamforming Matrix Transformation and User Scheduling for MIMO Systems (다중 안테나 빔형성 메트릭스 변환 기법 및 사용자 선택 기법)

  • Random beamforming (RBF) uses the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) feedback to select users in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. A large number of users are required to obtain the gain of multi-user diversity for a downlink transmission. However, if the number is not large enough, it may be difficult to obtain multi-user diversity, leading to a rapid degradation in performance. To resolve this problem, we propose the beamforming matrix transformation and the user scheduling method. The beamforming matrix transformation scheme uses the SINRs of each users and have a better performance than conventional schemes over a small number of users. In addition, we propose the user scheduling scheme corresponding to the beamforming matrix transformation. In simulation results, we demonstrate that the sum-rate can be improved according to the number of users.

Design of Temperature based Gain Scheduled Controller for Wide Temperature Variation (게인 스케줄링을 이용한 광대역 온도제어기의 설계)

  • This paper focused on the design of an efficient temperature controller for a plant with a wide range of operating temperatures. The greater the temperature difference a plant has, the larger the nonlinearity it is exposed to in terms of heat transfer. For this reason, we divided the temperature range into five sections, and each was modeled using ARMAX(auto regressive moving average exogenous). The movement of the dominant poles of the sliced system was analyzed and, based on the variation in the system parameters with temperature, optimal control parameters were obtained through simulation and experiments. From the configurations for each section of the temperature range, a temperature-based gain-scheduled controller (TBGSC) was designed for parameter variation of the plant. Experiments showed that the TBGSC resulted in improved performance compared with an existing proportional integral derivative (PID) controller.

  • This paper deals with the design of a yaw rate controller based on gain-scheduled H$\infty$ optimal control, which is intended to maintain the lateral stability of a vehicle. Uncertain factors such as vehicle mass and cornering stiffness in the vehicle yaw rate dynamics naturally call for the robustness of the feedback controller and thus H$\infty$ optimization technique is applied to synthesize a controller with guaranteed robust stability and performance against the model uncertainty. In the implementation stage, the feed-forward yaw moment by driver's steer input is estimated by the disturbance observer in order to determine the accurate compensatory moment. Finally, HILS results indicate that the proposed yaw rate controller can satisfactorily improve the lateral stability of an automobile.

Performance Evaluation of the Full-Scale Active Mass Dampers based on a Numerical Model and Test (실물크기 능동형 제어장치의 수치모델 및 실험에 기초한 성능 평가)

  • In this study, the experimental test results are given to confirm the control efficiency of the linear control algorithm used for designing the active mass dampers(AMD) which are supposed to be installed at Incheon international airport control tower. The comparison between the results from test and numerical analysis is conducted and it was observed that the AMD showed the control performance expected by the numerical model. The effects of the gain scheduling and constant-velocity signal added to the control signal calculated by the algorithm is identified through the observation that the AMD always show behavior within the given stroke limit without any loss of the desired control performance. The phase difference between the accelerations of the structure and the AMD were almost close to 90 degree, which implies that the AMD absorbed the structural energy effectively.

  • Recently developed aircrafts use Fly-By-Wire(FBW) or Fly-By-Light(FBL) system. These systems have some merits; they can perform very complicated missions, they can expand the flight region and improve the reliability of the aircrafts. With the development of flight control systems that use FBW technique, flight envelope protection concept is introduced to guarantee reliability of the aircraft and improve the efficiency of mission achievement. In this study, flight envelope protection system is designed using a dynamic trim algorithm, a peak response estimation, and a gain scheduling technique. The performance of these methods are compared by performing numerical simulation.

  • In this paper, the guidance laws and controllers for the gliding guided artillery munition is studied. The gliding guided artillery munition has wings for gliding to increase a range; therefore previous guidance laws and controllers for the guided munition could not be applied. Concepts of vector field guidance and proportional navigation guidance are applied for mid-term and terminal guidance, respectively. The gliding guided artillery munition is operated within wide altitude and speed areas; therefore, the controllers are designed for each area, and gain-scheduling and the linear interpolation technique is applied to compute the appropriate gains.

Optimization of Energy Consumption in the Mobile Cloud Systems

  • We investigate the optimization of energy consumption in Mobile Cloud environment in this paper. In order to optimize the energy consumed by the CPUs in mobile devices, we put forward using the asymptotic time complexity (ATC) method to distinguish the computational complexities of the applications when they are executed in mobile devices. We propose a multi-scale scheme to quantize the channel gain and provide an improved dynamic transmission scheduling algorithm when offloading the applications to the cloud center, which has been proved to be helpful for reducing the mobile devices energy consumption. We give the energy estimation methods in both mobile execution model and cloud execution model. The numerical results suggest that energy consumed by the mobile devices can be remarkably saved with our proposed multi-scale scheme. Moreover, the results can be used as a guideline for the mobile devices to choose whether executing the application locally or offloading it to the cloud center.

Data Dissemination in Wireless Sensor Networks with Instantly Decodable Network Coding

  • Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are widely applied in monitoring and control of environment parameters. It is sometimes necessary to disseminate data through wireless links after they are deployed in order to adjust configuration parameters of sensors or distribute management commands and queries to sensors. Several approaches have been proposed recently for data dissemination in WSNs. However, none of these approaches achieves both high efficiency and low complexity simultaneously. To address this problem, cluster-tree based network architecture, which divides a WSN into hierarchies and clusters is proposed. Upon this architecture, data is delivered from base station to all sensors in clusters hierarchy by hierarchy. In each cluster, father broadcasts data to all his children with instantly decodable network coding (IDNC), and a novel scheme targeting to maximize total transmission gain (MTTG) is proposed. This scheme employs a new packet scheduling algorithm to select IDNC packets, which uses weight status feedback matrix (WSFM) directly. Analysis and simulation results indicate that the transmission efficiency approximate to the best existing approach maximum weight clique, but with much lower computational overhead. Hence, the energy efficiency achieves both in data transmission and processing.

CTaG: An Innovative Approach for Optimizing Recovery Time in Cloud Environment

  • Traditional infrastructure has been superseded by cloud computing, due to its cost-effective and ubiquitous computing model. Cloud computing not only brings multitude of opportunities, but it also bears some challenges. One of the key challenges it faces is recovery of computing nodes, when an Information Technology (IT) failure occurs. Since cloud computing mainly depends upon its nodes, physical servers, that makes it very crucial to recover a failed node in time and seamlessly, so that the customer gets an expected level of service. Work has already been done in this regard, but it has still proved to be trivial. In this study, we present a Cost-Time aware Genetic scheduling algorithm, referred to as CTaG, not only to globally optimize the performance of the cloud system, but also perform recovery of failed nodes efficiently. While modeling our work, we have particularly taken into account the factors of network bandwidth and customer's monetary cost. We have implemented our algorithm and justify it through extensive simulations and comparison with similar existing studies. The results show performance gain of our work over the others, in some particular scenarios.
