  • This paper describes a speech enhancement scheme that leads to significant improvements in recognition performance when used in the ASR front-end. The proposed approach is based on adaptive comb filtering and an MMSE-related parameter estimator. While adaptive comb filtering reduces noise components remarkably, it is rarely effective in reducing non-stationary noises. Furthermore, due to the uniformly distributed frequency response of the comb-filter, it can cause serious distortion to clean speech signals. This paper proposes an improved comb-filter that adjusts its spectral magnitude to the original speech, based on the speech absence probability and the gain modification function. In addition, we introduce the modified comb filtering-based speech enhancement scheme for ASR in mobile environments. Evaluation experiments carried out using the Aurora 2 database demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms conventional adaptive comb filtering techniques in both clean and noisy environments.

  • Underwater image enhancement has received considerable attention in last decades, due to the nature of poor visibility and low contrast of underwater images. In this paper, we propose a new automatic underwater image enhancement algorithm, which combines nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) domain enhancement techniques with the mechanism of the human visual system (HVS). We apply the multiscale retinex algorithm based on the HVS into NSCT domain in order to eliminate the non-uniform illumination, and adopt the threshold denoising technique to suppress underwater noise. Our proposed algorithm incorporates the luminance masking and contrast masking characteristics of the HVS into NSCT domain to yield the new HVS-based NSCT. Moreover, we define two nonlinear mapping functions. The first one is used to manipulate the HVS-based NSCT contrast coefficients to enhance the edges. The second one is a gain function which modifies the lowpass subband coefficients to adjust the global dynamic range. As a result, our algorithm can achieve contrast enhancement, image denoising and edge sharpening automatically and simultaneously. Experimental results illustrate that our proposed algorithm has better enhancement performance than state-of-the-art algorithms both in subjective evaluation and quantitative assessment. In addition, our algorithm can automatically achieve underwater image enhancement without any parameter tuning.

  • This paper reports a filtered velocity feedback(FVF) controller, which is an alternative to direct velocity feedback(DVFB) controller. The instability problems at high frequencies due to non-collocated sensor/actuator configuration with the DVFB can be alleviated by the proposed FVF controller. The FVF controller is designed to filter out the unstable high frequency response. The dynamics of a clamped plate under forces and moments and the FVF controllers are formulated. The stability of the control system and performance are investigated with the open loop transfer function(OLTF). It is found that the FVF controller has a higher gain margin than the corresponding DVFB controller owing to the rapid roll-off behavior at high frequencies. Although the gain margin cannot be fully utilized because of the enhancement at the high frequencies, the vibration at the modes lower than the tuning frequency is well controlled. This performance of the FVF controller is shown to be improved from that of the DVFB controller. It is, however, noted that the stability around the tuning frequency is very sensitive so that the enhancement in vibration level should be followed. The reduction performance at low frequencies using the FVF controller should be compromised with the enhancement in the vibration at high frequencies while designing the controller.

  • Reflective polarizers can be used as luminance enhancement films for LCD backlights via the polarization recycling process. The optical performances of a wire grid polarizer (WGP) as a reflective polarizer adopted in edge-lit backlights were investigated by luminance evaluation and a time-domain simulation technique. The results were compared to those of a commercial dielectric multilayer film. The luminance gain factor of WGP was smaller than that of the multilayer film by 18%. This was attributed to a much larger internal loss of WGP due to light absorption by metal wires. The internal losses of both reflective polarizers and the polarization conversion efficiency of the backlight were obtained numerically based on a phenomenological model. The optical performances of WGP were optimized by using a time-domain simulation technique. The luminance gain increased and was found to become comparable to, but slightly less than the case of the dielectric multilayer film with decreasing line width.

  • This study aims at precise control of oil outlet temperature in the oil cooler system of machine tools for enhancement of working speed and processing accuracy. PID control logic is adopted to obtain desired oil outlet temperature of the oil cooler system with hot-gas bypass method. We showed that the gains of PID controller could be easily determined by using gain tuning methods to get the gain of PID controller without any mathematical model. We also investigated various gain tuning methods to design the gains of PID and compared each control performance for selecting the optimal tuning method on the hot gas bypass method through experiments. Moreover, we confirmed excellent control performance with proposed PI controller gain even though disturbances were abruptly added to the experimental system.

  • High quality camera images, with good contrast and intensity, are needed to obtain the desired information. Images need to be enhanced when they are dark or bright. The histogram equalization technique, which flattens the density distribution of an image, has been widely used to enhance image contrast due to its effectiveness and simplicity. This technique, however, cannot be used to enhance images that are either too dark or too bright. In addition, it is difficult to perform histogram equalization in real-time using a general-purpose computer. This paper proposes a histogram equalization technique with AGC (Automatic Gain Control) to extend the image enhancement range. It is designed using VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) to enhance images in real-time. The system is implemented with an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array). An image processing system with this FPGA is implemented. The performance of this image processing system is measured.

  • In this paper, the bandwidth and gain enhancement of a series-fed dipole pair antenna (SDPA) using a modified balun., a director, and two parasitic patches is studied. The proposed SDPA consists of two strip dipoles with different lengths, a ground reflector, which are connected through a coplanar strip line, a director, and two parasitic patches. The modified balun is used to increase the bandwidth, whereas the director and two parasitic patches are appended to the SDPA to enhance the gain in the middle and high frequency band. A prototype of the proposed SDPA is fabricated on an FR4 substrate, and the experimental results show that the antenna has a frequency band of 1.56-3.10 GHz for a VSWR < 2, and measured gain maintains over 7 dBi in the frequency range of 1.55-3.00 GHz.

  • A gain enhancement rail-to-rail buffer amplifier for liquid crystal display (LCD) source driver is proposed. An op-amp with extremely high gain is needed to decrease the offset voltage of the buffer amplifier. Cascoded floating current source and class-AB control block in the op-amp achieve a high voltage gain by reducing the channel length modulation effect in high voltage technologies. HSPICE simulation in $1\;{\mu}V$ 15 V CMOS process demonstrates that voltage gain is increased by 30 dB. The offset voltage is improved from 6.84 mV to $400\;{\mu}V$. Proposed op-amp is fabricated in an LCD source driver IC and overall system offset voltage is decreased by 2 mV.

  • There have been numerous studies on the enhancement of the noisy speech signal. In this paper, I propose a completely new speech enhancement method, that is, a filtering of a dissonant frequency combined with noise reduction algorithm. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method provides a significant gain in audible improvement compared with the conventional method. Therefore if the proposed enhancement scheme is used as a pre-filter, the perceptual quality of speech is greatly enhanced.
