  • One of the important roles of medical schools is to support medical students in deciding upon their future career path or choosing their specialty. The purpose of this study is to suggest a career advising model and strategies for medical students through a systematic approach. This study consists of three parts. The first part introduces some main career theories: super's career development theory, career decision-making theory, social cognitive career theory, and ecosystem theory. The second part proposes a systematic career advising model using the results acquired from previous studies and theories. This model considers a medical school as a social system that consists of two domains (internal and external). This social system is considered as a complex where various factors interact with each other: students' individual characteristics, institutional policies and culture, curriculum and learning experience, students' perceived specialty characteristics, and aspects of the external environment such as healthcare systems. The third part suggests some career advising strategies based on a systematic approach that medical schools can apply. These research results can be used for designing career advising courses for medical students, integrating various career advising programs and resources of medical schools, and evaluating the outcomes of career advising programs at an institutional level.

To achieve this goal, the experiences and perceptions of engineering students and other stakeholders regarding the factors influencing engineering students' major persistence and career decision were analyzed through online focus group interviews (FGI). The analysis of the interviews resulted in the identification of seven categories, which include meeting with older alumni, team project experiences, and internship experiences as factors influencing major persistence. Additionally, engineering interest, engineering self-efficacy, employment rates, economic factors, and limitations in women engineers' career development were identified as factors affecting career decision. Based on these findings, it is expected that engineering education will develop plans that focus on supporting the major persistence and career development of engineering students, thereby contributing to the future direction of engineering education.

  • This study examined career maturity of primary and middle school students who were interested in teaching job and compared to those who were interested in being a doctor. Using the data from the Korean Education Longitudinal Study 2013, we examined changes in the number of students (primary 5 through middle 2) who were interested in teaching as a job as well as in being a doctor. In addition, the participants' career maturity such as self-understanding, career planing, and attitudes towards job were examined and independent sample t-tests were conducted to compare two groups of students. Overall, the students who were interested in teaching showed lower level of career maturity compared to those who expected to be a doctor. Additionally, as students advanced to higher grades, the points of career maturity had been decreased regardless of which job they were interested in. Based on the findings, suggestions will be made to broaden the pool for future teachers.
