The furniture industry in Korea is characterized by its 42.6% of concentration in Gyeonggi Metropolitan area. When taking a look at the representative furniture complexes including Maseok, Ilsan, and Eojeong, the furniture complexes and stores were spontaneously generated at the outskirts of a city whose land cost is relatively cheap. As a consequence, they tend to be jumbled up and face to be moved or contracted forcefully owing to the new town development plan of Metropolitan areas. In contrast, Italia that is one of the advanced country in furniture industry, cultivates and develops furniture complexes in Brianza district by supporting them oriented in the metropolis Milano while hosting large-scale furniture exhibitions. Such attempts have advanced the position of the italian furniture industry into the most leading figure. In this extent, the furniture industry in Korea that is a traditional industry of Gyeonggi Province has to device a political measure and systematic measure for its cultivation as a way to secure the foundation to develop a high value-added product and foster its competitiveness. Such movements are suggested for the development of the furniture industry in Gyeonggi Province.

This study aimed to suggest practical and useful design directions for furniture for the rapidly-increasing university dormitory population. The process of the study took four steps; theoretical research, in-depth interview based on questionnaire, analysis, and development of design directions. Interviews were conducted with 25 university students living in dormitories in Seoul to find out problems with the existing furniture, students' satisfaction with the furniture, and their needs for other options. From these interviews, we found a few problems with dorm units, such as insufficient storage space, spaces too small for privacy, monotonous & standardized furniture design, and lack of multi-purpose furniture, etc. To support college students' complex lifestyles, five design directions were suggested from the analysis, such as a furniture design with highly multiple uses, modular furniture design, sufficient storage space, an application of various colors & materials, and practical use of dead space. Among these, two items were selected to be manufactured by the furniture design company. We expect that our suggested design directions for dorm furniture will support students' complex lifestyles, and satisfy students' needs with highly enhanced and better designed environments.

The furniture industry of the northern region of Gyeonggi Province consists of several regional complexes which was just autogenously, that is, not based on the organized and planned movements cultivated and clustered, so it stays small businesses. This fact certainly requires to find right courses for future policy direction, in order to develop the furniture industry centering in the northern region of Gyeonggi Province internationally competitive. Consequently the aim of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of the furniture industry in the northern region of Gyeonggi Province first and to present right development directions for the innovation of the structure of furniture industry according to the change of the times, i.e. to connect the industry, university and the authorities concerned well and to strengthen the technology level of furniture industry accordingly. In addition, this requires education and training of the excellent designers being able to create high added-value industrial sectors, including finding a new Korean national brand which should preoccupy the global market. Furthermore, the high-tech furniture industrial complex specialized in manufacture, distribution and marketing such as the division of work between business to business should be built and finally a Korean traditional & unique furniture culture should be created on the basis of a cultural approach of furniture industry. It would be the timing for entire business sectors related to Korea's furniture industry to establish an international standard certification like ISO, in order to upgrade the quality of furniture steadily while keeping our own tradition, and this belongs to a meaningful attempt for the high-tech lifestyles and the improvement in the quality of life of customers.

In this study I made an analysis on the background of creating of Minimal Art and thought of its artists during 1950~1960 and their works. Starting from the early Modernism that tried to depict the life of farmers and laborers in the chaos of war and viewing the art as the tools describing the life itself, minimal art took its root as furniture in ordinary life passing through the era of Surrealism and Dadaism. In 20th century, furniture designers were trying to seek new trend of modern furniture in the perspective of balance and immaculateness while excluding emotion and overall feeling through minimalism. These efforts result in the introduction of immaculateness and refinement in furniture design. Hence, this study is to represent a new trend of furniture design utilizing the margin of furniture in complex lives through formative characteristics that minimal art beholds.

As library have become changed. Beyond conventional simple functions such as data storing and recording, the functions of modern public libraries are expended to various directions, for example functions of encouraging residents to utilize information and participate in cultural activities and also a function of life-long education, resulting in playing a role as complex space. As the role of public libraries changes into a complex one, spatial planning reflecting this change is required. Spatial arrangements, furniture arrangements and interior images in 12 public libraries in Seoul were analyzed. As a result of the study, it was found that in spatial arrangements, many public libraries linked spaces by functions. Furniture arrangements have been changing from the closed arrangement to the open arrangement. Interior images were identified as static and simple except digital information space. Accordingly, public libraries have became needed to play a proper role of community facilities for local residents by planning furniture arrangements and conducting interior designs taking characteristics of many different users into consideration.

In line with the government's policies for localization, furniture industry in the northern area in Gyeoggi-province at presence has been operated by several furniture industrial complexes in the region in small scale, but now it should be considered from overall view of furniture industry in order to develop more competitive industry. As a matter of this fact, Gyeonggi-province should be engaged in planning to make various industrial clusters of the furniture-related industry based on the northern area of province at structural as well as politic aspects, with the help of the analyzed status of the current furniture industry in region, in supporting them by the systemized policies and developing the overall program to foster furniture as an international-competitive industry. Therefore this study suggested 'furniture industry center' which will exclusively handle and maintain the network of each furniture company in the northern area of Gyeonggi-province and 'high-tech furniture industry complex' to keep pace with the globalization and to be competitive internationally and also 'common brand business' for the cooperation at technical phase. In order to realize and vitalize such suggestions, it is urgently necessary that the network consists of the furniture companies and the expert of the related department in local universities as the main body for furniture industry, of course Gyeonggi-province as well.

During last 4 decades of industrial development, apartment has been rapidly disseminated throughout the nation. Its main progress, however, only appeared in quantity, not in quality. To promote housing industry in more way and to enhance peoples' life quality through the better housing environment, housing plan should be based on living items including furniture, appliances and etc. Not enough research has been done to find out living items for better house plan development and furniture design. Among living items, furniture reflects both directly and indirectly people's lifestyle and way of living. This study attempted to find out the pattern of furniture possession which people own in their bedrooms. An in depth questionnaire survey of 600 households was carried during the year 2000. A variety of patterns were found which indicated diverse living conditions within a very similar uniform multifamily apartment complex. The result of this study will be helpful to understand the living conditions in a more systematic way and to generate new concept for both residential unit plan and furniture design.

Recently, the increase of single households are remarkable in Korean society due to various social and economic reasons such as aging and changes in values, and it is expected to bring many changes to social and economic structures and residential spaces. Increase of single households is a result of complex economic, cultural and social factors. It is because as the individual's financial independence increases due to elevated income and education level, the age of marriage is going up and the individualism, which values the individual's value rather than custom, is spreading. It is expected to accelerate further in connection with the changes in structure of population, such as a low birth rate and aging. As the number of single households is increasing, the development and marketing for single household products are actively growing. With the increase in consumption demand and need of growing single households, the multi-functional system furniture that can be efficiently and conveniently used in small spaces are needed, but the furniture manufactured in Korean companies are designed for regular housing and is not suitable for single households. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop multi-functional system furniture can be freely used in the housing structure of single household and small spaces.

Wood cutting utilizing CNC art in the field of furniture design industry, art, education are diverse. However, there is lack of data in the case for wood cutting, such as cutting conditions and wood cutting. So this article is to establish furniture design processing using CNC. The researchers investigated the processed products using CNC, the data of the web site and CNC relevant articles, then organized its impact on the furniture industry today. History and definition of CNC have studied for a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages. Then, the researchers analyzed the cases to investigate the wood cutting conditions, was applied to the fabrication of furniture domestic and foreign. CNC organized systematically design information through the computer So, it allowed to reduce the repetitive behavior that has to work hand in the furniture manufacture existing. CNC has made it possible to design a fine complex in furniture design industry. So it became possible to make a new representation and production of various forms. Material about CNC are mostly for milling machine and shelves for metal processing. So, the researchers investigated and precautions general content of wood cutting. The enhanced understanding to investigate an example that is applied outside the country, is used to analyze the expression various techniques CNC. It is difficult to obtain accurate data processing, it has various characteristics in the same timber, Future research is about analyzing type applications and CNC machining range at the time of processing the various wood.
