This study was jointly conducted by the department of nursing science in a college of natural sciences and the furniture design department in the art and physical education to research the critical factors for the furniture development for the Elderly in consideration of the surging number of senior citizens not only in Korea but also globally. On the basis of the Elderly's physical and mental characteristics investigated by the department of nursing science, the furniture design guideline for the Elderly was presented. The following points should be considered at designing the furniture for the Elderly. First, multiple functions like chair with removable toilet bowl and part lighting in bed are advantageous. Second, the dimension of furniture such as chair, bed and sofa should be ergonomically thought in terms of structure for the Elderly's convenience. Third, the bright and vivid color of furniture should be chosen from the aspect of the design, while the different kinds of blue should be avoided. Small patterns and high glossy are not recommendable, but various kinds of feelings in different shapes are suggested. Forth, the material should contribute to the fracture prevention and for that sponge, fabric and leather smoothing the surface of furniture are recommendable as the finishing treatment in a wide variety of colors.

As life style changes, the demand for stacking chairs are increasing as the use of event halls or outside furniture where people gather in crowd is increasing. Early stacking chairs were mainly made to pile up a great amount and store, but in modern days it also has a decorative purpose. Besides, the development of various new materials and applied technology of furniture manufacture, the structure and design of stacking chair is becoming more interesting. Basically, according to the structure of the leg, the form and method of piling up is decided. The structure of the leg means the location of the leg connected to the seat, and according to the location, it can be piled up as upper, front, or rotational type. Such is the way how stacking chairs are classified according to the location of the leg, with its basis; the structure of stacking chair is reviewed. Now, chair for piling up is overcoming its simple function, which aesthetic beauty or arrangement of color after piling up is being considered. Also, according to storing, moving, and the place of use, various designs are demanded. As people's interest in stacking chair is increasing, various research regarding design should continue.

This study is a review on the relationship between furniture purchasers and producers in the Joseon period. Understanding the relationships in our traditional spirit and the Joseon furniture that reflects a aesthetic sense is a meaningful work. Joseon was to build an ideal country which put emphasis on the order and harmony through Theory of 'Yeak' as the confucianism nation. Human aesthetics, which emphasis on the spiritual value by confirmity to nature and forcus on the relaxed, deficient personality rather than completeness was established as the central formative consciousness of the Joseon Dynasty. The nature of things in the confucian scholar prior to the representations of things is expressed in the form of master craftsman's skill and soul. Formative consciousness of the confucian scholar is to realize ideals by communciation and interchange with master craftsman's soul in the form of the Joseon furniture. The beauty of restraint and brevity in the Joseon Dynasty furniture includes meanings and procedures of art work. It implies an orderer's purpose of production and a producer's products. Understanding the spirit of times in the production becomes the cornerstone capable of getting closer to the furniture ultimate proper function. These problems have a very close relationship with the problems of modern people's commnuication. We expect an even higher growth of the furniture by achieving more improved communication based on the consumer's great insight and the producer's passion.

In the radically changing market situation, surface materials of student furniture are a very important element to decide the consumption pattern and the market price. Thus, this study examined the characteristics of surface materials by classifying the student furniture into children's, juniors', and seniors' furniture while accessing the features of such surface materials through Glulam, veneer, poly paper, finishing foil, high pressure melamine (HPM), and low pressure melamine (LPM), and PVC vinyl. When taking a look at the surface materials that were most frequently produced in each domestic furniture company, the combined materials that used more than 2 elements (31.88%), LPM (23.19%), and Glulam (20.29%) were introduced at the market in the order. Regarding the analysis made on colors, the combination colors took more than half (55.32%) followed by brown (13.83%) and beige (11.7%) in the order. Based on the results derived from the analysis, the study suggests to stress more importance to surface materials when developing student furniture and to exert efforts for the consistent development of new materials and quality improvement, as a way to accelerate the development of the furniture industry in Korea.

In recent years the industry has utilized some of the 3D printers in the manufacturing process a trend which spread also a personal desktop 3D printer priced. The 3D printer can create the 3D object by using an ink or a laser instead of the powders, and various liquid plastic material. Properties of 3D printers are liquid, solid, powder and raw materials are also classified as varied. New ideas and processes in the form of designer furniture, becoming increasingly evolved through the development of materials and technologies. Science, art and technology combine to create a new aesthetic for the complex and free binding structure is a combination of design and materials are available in craft and the structure appears not showing. 3D scanning was not simply continue to develop as the production process by a variety of tools and content transformation. Create new mathematical tables and chairs designed by the theory fit the digital age shows a coupling structure with decoration into small pieces. It has created a new craft technique in the digital age.

Kuramata Shiro's design has been evaluated as an unseen type of beauty. He created totally different aesthetics from functional furniture by utilizing glass, acrylic, and expanded steel mesh which usually are inappropriate for making furniture. Kuramata told that his design always starts from zero status. By doing so, he could be free from the existing notion and form of furniture. This means that every function and every form must be based on his own understanding and experiment in order to produce newness. Owing to these efforts, we can regard his design as artworks. Kuramata tried to bring forth formative lines inside contour of furniture rather than to deform only the formal outlines of furniture. These lines are very delicate and sometimes ephemeral. But they establish formal potentiality of phenomenological being of beauty. Also those lines are built from humble industrial material but they open the truth of thing itself and introduce the beauty to field of aletheia. At the same time, transcending limitation of function and use, they leave pure form and temporariness. So, lines become a field of Heideggerian rift which produces embodiment of form. We can appreciate his design through these lines that are relatively thin but vivid enough to follow his original world of art.

Furniture is a medium to interconnect the living space to human, and it is the closest environmental element that limits the functions of the space, defines the style of the living, and adjusts the actions and behaviors of human. Therefore the furniture can be said to be one of the craft arts that reflects the culture and living style as they are according to the periodical, regional, and social stratum characteristics. Within this context, this study tries to suggest new design and living culture that can harmonize with the modern residence living culture and incorporate the traditional varnishing technique with lacquer that had been discontinued. Coming to the modern days, the varnishing with lacquer is getting attention again with its environment friendly characteristics and antibiotic functions, and is being applied to various applications. To inherit and maintain such an excellent traditional culture, I would like to improve the practicality by applying to modern furniture, and to contribute to develop and tell the world about the superiority of our culture.

This study attempted to identify the characteristics of chair design from furniture company, $K{\ddot{a}}llemo$, the furniture manufacturer in Sweden manufacturing mostly the limited edition of art furniture on the basis of the unique management philosophy. There are 12 artists manufactured chairs for $K{\ddot{a}}llemo$. Of them, this study selected 4 artists-Sigurdur Gustafsson, John Kandell, Komplot Design, Mats Theselius-who designed at least more than three chairs. Total 25 chairs were analyzed; 6 from Sigurdur Gustafsson, 8 from John Kandell, 3 from Komplot Design and 8 from Mats Theselius. The chair structure was divided into three parts, seat, back and structure and analyzed by material, color, type of legs and finishing. The following results were derived from the study. First, $K{\ddot{a}}llemo$ secured the regular customers who want to possess the chairs as the artistic works by continuing the small quantity mass-production system insisting that the maximum quantity of production is 360 pieces and the minimum quantity is 33 pieces. Second, the sufficient time and cost were invested in the initial phase of design. This approach seems to be deviated from the traditional business system that has to create the revenue at a glance, but ultimately induces the commercial success by exponentially increasing the revenue through the creation of various product lines. Third, $K{\ddot{a}}llemo$ provides the space that the artists who work for $K{\ddot{a}}llemo$ can sufficiently enjoy the mental composure and luxury required for the designers by strictly selecting the artists and providing the best environment for enabling the creative activities that look like the pure art area. This study enables the further analysis and research on other collections of $K{\ddot{a}}llemo$ that mass-produces the chairs on the basis of the unique philosophy in the world as well as in Sweden using more various kinds of analysis frameworks.

The objective of this study was to increase the utilizability of domestic thinning and small diameter wood as applying in pattern design which can be used in interior decoration, wood craft and wood furniture, and in developing the designs of furniture and household items. We investigated the physical and mechanical characteristics of Betula platyphylla Wood by pressurization and heat treatment. Color change is clear, and the wood density is increased with increasing pressing rate. The compressive strength, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity in bending strength are decreased as heating time is increased after pressing. However, shrinkage is improved after pressing and heating.

Recently, the increase of single households are remarkable in Korean society due to various social and economic reasons such as aging and changes in values, and it is expected to bring many changes to social and economic structures and residential spaces. Increase of single households is a result of complex economic, cultural and social factors. It is because as the individual's financial independence increases due to elevated income and education level, the age of marriage is going up and the individualism, which values the individual's value rather than custom, is spreading. It is expected to accelerate further in connection with the changes in structure of population, such as a low birth rate and aging. As the number of single households is increasing, the development and marketing for single household products are actively growing. With the increase in consumption demand and need of growing single households, the multi-functional system furniture that can be efficiently and conveniently used in small spaces are needed, but the furniture manufactured in Korean companies are designed for regular housing and is not suitable for single households. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop multi-functional system furniture can be freely used in the housing structure of single household and small spaces.
