This study was carried out to investigate the susceptibility of wood-based composite panels exposed to mould and sap-stain fungi. Five wood deterioration fungi (three mould fungi, two sap stain fungi) were inoculated into two types of commercial wood-based composite panels (medium density fiberboard and particleboard), which have three class of formaldehyde emission. All wood-based composite panels were more or less susceptible to mould and sap stain fungi. The attacking mode of the fungi was highly dependent on formaldehyde emission. This study indicates that all wood-based composite panels, specially low formaldehyde emission class panels should be considered to prevent fungal deterioration when they are used for exterior and humid interior applications.

The feasibility of using bleaching treatments for removing fungal stain was evaluated on heavily stained raiadta pine sapwood. Sodium chlorite and sodium hypochlorite appeared to destain fungal discoloration by providing proper treatment conditions (chemical concentration, treatment temperature, and treatment time), while hydrogen peroxide did not remove fungal stain under the bleaching regimes evaluated. The addition of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide in the hydrogen peroxide solution as a buffer could remove fungal discoloration completely; however, the color of wood surface turned faint green after bleaching, thereby reducing the lightness of bleached samples. The results suggest that hydrogen peroxide bleaching could be a feasible method for removing fungal discoloration of stained radiata pine sapwood, although further research is needed to solve the problem of color change after bleaching. Also, further tests under field conditions are recommended.
Recently, the morphological and molecular features of five stain fungi infecting rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis), namely Paecilomyces maximus, Paecilomyces formosus, Penicillium crustosum, Paecilomyces lecythidis and Aspergillus chevalieri, have been studied. Prior to this study, the authors revealed that catechin from gambir (Uncaria gambir) could inhibit the growth of the white-rot fungus Schizophyllum commune, and it was important to determine the bioactivity of the aforementioned agent against A. chevalieri. The efficacy of the biocidal agent was examined using a laboratory wooden block test. Rubberwood blocks, 8 mm in thickness, 20 mm in width, and 30 mm in length, were impregnated with catechin solution at concentrations of 6%, 9%, 12%, and 15% (w/v) using the vacuum-pressure method, and their bioactivity was monitored over three weeks through visual and scanning electron microscope assessment of fungal growth as well as the discoloration intensity of the wood samples. The results showed that catechin treatment increased the resistance of wood samples to A. chevalieri. Overall, the higher the catechin concentration, the lower the fungal growth. The lowest fungal growth was observed in the wood samples treated with 12% and 15% catechin (score of 0), demonstrating no discoloration. In contrast, the fungal growth score of the untreated wood samples reached 4, indicating severe discoloration. Catechins appear to be adequate biofungicides against stain fungi in rubberwood.
This study was conducted to investigate the influence of storage time on the sapstain development of Japanese red pine and Korean pine logs during storage in log yard, and their stain characteristics. Japanese red pine and Korean pine trees were harvested and cut into logs in mid January of 2001. These logs were transported to the two local sawmills where they were closely stacked in remote parts of log yard. The logs were then sampled destructively by cutting seven to nine 3-cm long discs along the length of each log at intervals of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 month after felling. The stain coverage and maximal radial penetration of stain were measured from the discs of the sampled logs after the isolation of causal staining fungi. The sapstain was primarily infested by the attack of bark beetles and the species of bark beetle was identified as Tomicus piniperda. The main fungal species isolated from stained wood was Ophiostoma species. Based on the present study, the logs could be stored in log yard until May without stain; but stain development was rapid after May and the severity of stain increased proportionally with storage time. Korean pine was more susceptible to fungal stain than Japanese red pine. During summer storage, decay started to develop in logs and the main species were identified as Tyromyces sp. and Schizophyllum commune. Information provided in this paper would be very useful to develop more effective control strategies for sapstain prevention in Japanese red pine and Korean pine logs.
During 2010 and 2012 grape harvest seasons in Gyeonggi-do, Korea, a white stain symptom was observed on the harvested grape fruits in 'Campbell-Early' and 'Kyoho' varieties. In samples collected from the infected vine, two different strains of pathogenic fungi have been found and identified as Acremonium acutatum and Trichothecium roseum based on fungal morphology and nucleotide sequence of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and supported by the phylogenetic analysis of the rDNA-ITS region. The DNA homologies of the isolated strains were 99.8% and 99.6% identical with T. roseum (IFB-22133) and A. acutatum (CBS682.71), respectively. In the pathogenicity test, the spores of A. acutatum and T. roseum sprayed on the grapes caused white stain symptoms on the fruits in two weeks after the artificial inoculation, which is similar to observations in the field. To our knowledge, this is the first report of white stain symptoms caused by A. acutatum and T. roseum on the grapes in Korea.
Two kinds of chemicals (RNF-3 and RNF-4) with high anti-mold effectiveness against stored fungi causing fungal discoloration was selected from among the six kinds of fluoride-based chemicals in the preceding study. In this study, the anti-mold test using 16 species fungi isolated from the softwood lumbers which were fungal discolored and field test in the sawmill was carried out to prove the feasibility for practical using of selected chemicals. For the isolated fungi, the RNF-3 consist of F and Cu showed high mycelial growth control in the PDA medium and fungicidal effectiveness in the japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora), korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) and radiata pine (Pinus radiata) when the concentration was 2% or more. However the RNF-4 consist of F only was not effective compared with RNF-3 because of mycelial growth in the PDA medium and wood treated with 2% or more chemical solution. The RNF-3 also showed a strong anti-mold effectiveness because there was no fungal discoloration for the radiata pine boards treated by 2% and 10 min. soaking in the field test. These results mean that RNF-3 can be used as domestic anti-stain chemicals for prevention of fungal discoloration of the softwood lumber

The annals of Joseon dynasty, especially the volumes of King SeJong(1418-1450 A.D.), were heavily deteriorated by fungi. Investigations on the deteriorating and foxing fungi were carried out. Fungal structures on the beeswax, which were coated on the both side of Han-Ji, were suspected to be involved in the deterioration, and were observed by SEM. Isolation and culturing of these fungi were tried by scrubing swab samples and placing on the artificial media. Culture-independent approaches were used to identify the fungal strains associated with damages of beeswax and foxing of the paper by the analyses based on DNA sequences data from the specific ITS region of rDNA regions. In addition, well-known paper staining fungi(PSF), i.e., Aspergillus terreus var. terreus, Fusarium oxysporum, Chaetomium globosum, Cladosporium cladosporioides, and Alternaria solani, were compared in the mycelial growth and stain on beeswax and papers under different environmental conditions (temperature, light, moisture, etc). Fungal strains isolated from the air samples in the storage room and shelves were identified as Irpex sp., Arthrinium sacchari, Cladosporium tenuissimum, Aspergillus sclerotiorum, Sistotrema brinkmannii, and Hypoxylon bovei var. microsporum The isolated strains were compared in growth and stain patterns on beeswax and papers(Han-Ji, Hwa-Ji, and Yang-Ji) whether these can cause damage or foxing on the annals or not.
A young slaty-backed gull was found dead nearby Seongsan harbor, Seogwipo-si, Jeju. Grossly, focal ulceration and a protuberant nodule were observed in intermediated zone between proventriculus and gizzard. Numerous discrete or confluent white-yellowish nodules were scattered on the surface of liver. Caudal portion of left kidney was replaced by a white-yellowish nodule. Three raised masses were observed in the spleen. Histologically, there were severe ulceration with hemorrhage in the gizzard and multifocal granulomatous inflammations in liver, kidney, spleen, and lungs. Pink to dark-red, round to oval fungal spores and pseudohyphae in granulomatous lesions were confirmed by periodic acid-Schiff stain. Candida albicans were isolated from the lesions of liver, kidney, spleen and gizzard using fungal culture and confirmed by VITEK 2 system. Based on the gross, histopathological findings, and fungal examination, this case was diagnosed as systemic candidiasis of a wild slaty-backed gull. In our best knowledge, this is the first report for systemic candidiasis characterized by multifocal granulomatous lesions in internal organs of a wild gull in Korea.

A 19-year-old woman presented with an asymptomatic cutaneous discoloration on her nape. Dermatological examination revealed localized dark brown to dark pigmented velvety macules and patches. She denied a past medical history, except for a 7-kg weight gain over a 6-months period. Histopathologically, the specimen showed hyperkeratosis, epidermal hyperplasia, mild acanthosis, and papillomatosis. In addition, keratin material and fungal spore were noted between the papilloma ridges. Periodic acid-Schiff special stain showed a positive result for the fungal spore in the horny layer. She was treated with a daily oral dose of terbinafine and topical flutrimazole. After 12 weeks of treatment, she is currently under observation without pigmentation and adverse effect. We considered the initial diagnosis as acanthosis nigricans because of weight gain, similar clinical features, and histological findings. However, the final diagnosis was hyperkeratotic head and neck Malassezia dermatosis considering the presence of yeast and the dramatic improvement after antifungal treatment. To the best of our knowledge, hyperkeratotic head and neck Malassezia dermatosis is not well characterized in the literature. It is an unusual variant of pityriasis versicolor. The skin lesion appears brown to dark, scaly, and hyperkeratotic macules and patches located on the face and neck. Here, we reported an unusual case of hyperkeratotic head and neck Malassezia dermatosis.
An attempt was made to establish a mass-screening technique for resistance to purple seed stain .disease in soybean. Seeds sterilized in 1 : 10000 'mercuric chloride for 1 minute and transffered to Petridishes containing 20ml water agar plus 50ppm of the sodium salt of 2,4-D were inoculated by placing a small agar cube containing fungal mycelium on the seed coat of each seed. A positive correlation between natural infection of purple seed :stain and purple discoloration by seed inoculation technique was highly significant and by this technique, some native soybean collections and introduced varieties were tested for resistance to the disease. Most of the soybean varieties tested were susceptible except for the varieties Hill, Harosoy and Sac, resistant comparatively.
