A new model for transient heat transfer model on external steel elements

  • The Eurocode system provides limited information regarding the structural fire design of external steel structures. Eurocode 1 provides thermal action for external member but only in steady-state conditions. On the other hand, Eurocode 3 provides a methodology to determine heat transfer to external steelwork, but there is no distinction in cross section shapes and, in addition, the calculated temperature distribution is assumed to be uniform in the cross section. This paper presents the results of a research carried out to develop a new transient heat transfer model for external steel elements to improve the current approach of the Eurocodes. This research was carried out as part of the project EXFIRE "Development of design rules for the fire behaviour of external steel structures", funded by the European Research Programme of the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS).

  • The enforcement of the Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gas is definitely a challenge we cannot avoid. Korea ranks 10th in the world and 1st among OECD countries in terms of the volume of greenhouse gas emission and is expected to join Annex I countries which have to reduce emission after 2012. For the sustainable development, we shouldn't depend upon fossil fuel energy longer. This study will provide preliminary data to developing renewable energy systems for urban generation. There are investigated a recent case study of CONCERTO projects co-funded by the European Commission and analyzed application of renewable energy systems as a urban energy source.

  • In this paper, the research background and objectives of the wind mapping project of the Korean Peninsula, which has been carrying out as a part of "Investigation of new-renewable energy resources and establishment of comprehensive management system" funded by Korea Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, are introduced together with the intermediate result of the project so far. The Korean wind map is to be established by numerical wind simulation based on terrain model ME-DEM and land-use model ME-LUM with the spatial resolution of 10km.

Overview of Special Educations for Gifted Students in Mathematics

  • Special educations for gifted students have not been given enough attention in Japan with a little exception. Indeed, such educations were sometimes despised in Japan by teachers and parents as well as by boards of education, because one of the features of postwar education system in Japan was an excessive egalitarianism. The other is cramming of knowledge in school education, which is necessary for high school graduates to pass entrance examinations for famous universities such as University of Tokyo, or Kyoko University. However, in 1997, some trials of special educations for gifted students started. The Ministry of Education, Sports, Culture, Science and Technology admitted 'skipping a year to enter universities.' In this paper, the following three topics would be discussed. 1. Enrollment of high school students aged 17 into Chiba University. 2. Summer seminars conducted by Japan Mathematics Foundation of Olympiad. 3. Super Science High School Program funded by the Ministry of Education.

  • Korea Highway Corporation(KHC) began the ambitious KHC Test Road construction project from 1997. It is 7.7km long two-lane highway next to the mainline of Jungbu Inland Expressway. The KHC Test Road construction was completed at the December 2002. It is composed of twenty-five PCC test pavement sections. Section design parameters are (1) concrete slab thickness, (2) base type, (3) base thickness (12, 15, and 18cm), and (4) pavement type. Twenty-five PCC test pavement sections contain 1241 sensors to evaluate the behavior of pavement system under traffic load and environmental change. The behavior of pavement systems will be identified by the observation of sensor measurement and pavement distress survey from test pavement sections. The Test Road research outcome will validate the Korean Pavement Design Guide which is develop by on-going funded research from the Ministry of Construction and Transportation.

  • This paper describes the global vibro-acoustic troubleshooting approach, used to identify and separate different sources of noise and vibrations on a boilerfeed pump testrig. The pump serves for rotor dynamic research of a EC-funded BRITE-Euram profect. This approach resulted in the identification of local structural flexibilities in the connections between the machinery and the base plate. The relative importance of the modes during normal operation is revealed by comparison with operational deformation shapes. The use of sound intensity mapping allowed to calculate the total sound power and to rank the equipment according to its sound power contribution. High acoustic levels were found and related to the fluid drive and to the piping system. Modification of the piping section resulted in a reduction of noise and vibration levels along the test loop and smooth operation in a wide suction pressure range.

Numerical simulation of flow around two circular cylinders in various arrangements

  • The results of flow feature around two circular cylinders in various arrangements are carried out using two-dimensional simulation at Reynolds number of 200. In this work, time-averaged fluid force acting on the upstream and downstream cylinders were calculated for staggered angle ${\alpha}=0{\sim}90^{\circ}$ in the range of L/D = 1.1~5, where ${\alpha}$ is the angle between the free-stream flow and the line connecting the centers of the cylinders, L is centre-to-centre distance and D is cylinder diameter. The dependence of magnitudes and trends of fluid force coefficient on the spacing ratio L/D and ${\alpha}$ are discussed. In all arrangements of two cylinders, tandem arrangement (${\alpha}=0^{\circ}$) is the case produced a minimum drag coefficient for downstream cylinder. Moreover, the locations of separation and stagnation points or pressure coefficient on surface of the cylinder were examined. Spatiotemporal Impact Assessments of Highway Construction: Autonomous SWAT Modeling

  • In the United States, the completion of Construction Work Zone (CWZ) impact assessments for all federally-funded highway infrastructure improvement projects is mandated, yet it is regarded as a daunting task for state transportation agencies, due to a lack of standardized analytical methods for developing sounder Transportation Management Plans (TMPs). To circumvent these issues, this study aims to create a spatiotemporal modeling framework, dubbed "SWAT" (Spatiotemporal Work zone Assessment for TMPs). This study drew a total of 43,795 traffic sensor reading data collected from heavily trafficked highways in U.S. metropolitan areas. A multilevel-cluster-driven analysis characterized traffic patterns, while being verified using a measurement system analysis. An artificial neural networks model was created to predict potential 24/7 traffic demand automatically, and its predictive power was statistically validated. It is proposed that the predicted traffic patterns will be then incorporated into a what-if scenario analysis that evaluates the impact of numerous alternative construction plans. This study will yield a breakthrough in automating CWZ impact assessments with the first view of a systematic estimation method.

  • In principle, R&D of general weapons systems are led by companies or government-funded organizations. In terms of project execution, the defense R&D planning system was reorganized to conduct SE-based project management by integrating the naval ship project execution procedure into the general weapon system R&D procedure. The development progress was confirmed according to the guide for SE application of DAPA, and a technical review meeting was proposed to enter into the each next phase in the R&D process. This paper focuses on improvement for technical review in terms of technical management based on system engineering for R&D mounted weapon systems and the naval surface ship project in preliminary design and detailed design. So, the improvement direction for reviewing the entry criteria for the R&D weapons systems of the naval ship and mounted weapons is proposed.

A Study on the Relationship between TLO Organization and Technology Transfer Performance: Focused on Government-Funded Research Institutes (TLO 조직과 기술이전 성과의 관계에 관한 연구: 정부출연연구기관을 중심으로)

  • This study analyzed the effects of TLO's organization size, expertise, and economic compensation on technology transfer performance using the panel data of Government-Funded Research Institutes in 2013-2016. First, the size of TLO personnel and budget have a positive effect on the technology transfer performance. However, in the case of TLO manpower, the statistical significance of the effect on the number of technology transfers was only 90%, and it did not affect royalty. Second, TLO expertise has a strong impact on technology transfer performance. It shows that the number of professional license holders, such as patent attorney or a technology valuer, has a statistically significant effect on the increase of the technology transfer number and the royalty under the 99% confidence level. However, unlike expected, the size of the Ph.D. did not seem to have any effect on technology transfer performance. Finally, the economic compensation for TLO does not affect both the number of technology transfers and the royalty. It does not seem to work as an appropriate incentive system, because the absolute size of the compensation is too small. The results of the above analysis suggest that it is important to secure expertise in order for the TLO organization to play a substantial role, and it is necessary to improve the economic compensation system to attract TLOs to technology transfer.
