  • Ceramic-Metal Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) are of great interest for application as Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) or Wear Resistant Coating (WRC). Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) is a promising techniques for time-saving consolidation of laminated/graduated powder systems: SPS is a pressure-assisted electrical sintering method which directly applies a pulsed DC current as heat source. In the present work, production of $Al_2O_3-Ni$ FGMs by means of Spark Plasma Sintering is considered; effect of sintering condition on density, hardness and fracture toughness is studied. Problems correlated to this new processing technology are discussed.

  • This study analyzes the apparent fracture toughness of a thick-walled cylinder with a functionally graded material (FGM) coating at the inner surface of the cylinder. The cylinder is assumed to have a single radial edge crack emanating from its inner surface. The crack surfaces and the inner surface of the cylinder are subjected to an internal pressure. The incompatible eigenstrain developed in the cylinder due to nonuniform coefficient of thermal expansion as a result of cooling from sintering temperature is taken into account. Based on a method of evaluating stress intensity factor introduced in our previous study, an approach is developed to calculate apparent fracture toughness. The approach is demonstrated for a cylinder with a TiC/$Al_{2}O_{3}$ FGM coating and some numerical results of apparent fracture toughness are presented graphically. The effects of material distribution profile, cylinder wall thickness, application temperature, and coating thickness on the apparent fracture toughness are investigated in details. It is found that all of these factors play an important role in controlling the apparent fracture toughness of the cylinder.

  • A four-layered W/Cu functionally graded material (FGM) (W90% + Cu10%/W80% + Cu20%/W70% + Cu30%/W60% + Cu40%, wt.% fraction) and a four-layered diamond/W-Cu FGM (W90% + Cu10%/W80% + Cu20%/W70% + Cu30%/W55% + Cu40% + diamond5%, wt.% fraction) were fabricated by microwave sintering. The thermal conductivity and thermal shock resistance of diamond/W-Cu FGM and W-Cu FGM were investigated. The morphologies of the diamond particles and different FGMs were analyzed using AFM, SEM, EDS, and TEM. The results show that a 200 nm rough tungsten coating was formed on the surface of the diamond. The density of the tungsten-coated diamond/W-Cu FGM, obtained by microwave sintering at 1200 ℃ for 30 min, was 94.66%. The thermal conductivity of the fourlayered diamond/W-Cu FGM was 220 W·m-1·K-1, which is higher than that of the four-layered W/Cu FGM (209 W m-1 K-1). This indicates that adding an appropriate amount of tungsten-coated diamond to the high Cu layer W/Cu FGM improves the thermal conductivity of the composite. The diamond/W-Cu FGM sintered at 1200 ℃ for 10 min exhibited better thermal shock resistance than diamond/W-Cu FGM sintered at 1100 ℃ for 10 min.

  • In the present paper, multiple interface cracks between a functionally graded orthotropic coating and an orthotropic half-plane substrate under concentrated loading are considered by means of the distribution dislocation technique (DDT). With the use of integration of Fourier transform the problem is reduced to a system of Cauchy-type singular integral equations which are solved numerically to compute the dislocation density on the surfaces of the cracks. The distribution dislocation is a powerful method to calculate accurate solutions to plane crack problems, especially this method is very good to find SIFs for multiple unequal cracks located at the interface. Hence this technique allows considering any number of interface cracks. The primary objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of the interaction of multiple interface cracks, load location, material orthotropy, nonhomogeneity parameters and geometry parameters on the modes I and II SIFs. Numerical results show that modes I/II SIFs decrease with increasing the nonhomogeneity parameter and the highest magnitude of SIF occurs where distances between the load location and crack tips are minimal.

  • In order to understand the difference in SiC deposition between the $CH_3SiCl_3-H_2$ and $C_3H_8-SiCl_4-H_2$ systems, we calculate the phase stability among ${\beta}$-SiC, graphite and silicon. We constructed the phase-diagram of ${\beta}$-SiC over graphite and silicon via computational thermodynamic calculation considering pressure (P), temperature (T) and gas composition (C) as variables. Both P-T-C diagrams showed a very steep phase boundary between the SiC+C and SiC region perpendicular to the H/Si axis, and also showed an SiC+Si region with a H/Si value of up to 6700 in the $C_3H_8-SiCl_4-H_2$, and 5000 in the $CH_3SiCl_3-H_2$ system. This difference in phase boundaries is explained by the ratio of Cl to Si, which is 4 for the $C_3H_8-SiCl_4-H_2$ system and 3 for the $C_3H_8-SiCl_4-H_2$ system. Because the C/Si ratio is fixed at 1 in the $CH_3SiCl_3-H_2$ system while it can be variable in the $C_3H_8-SiCl_4-H_2$ system, the functionally graded material is applicable for better mechanical bonding during SiC coating on graphite substrate in the $C_3H_8-SiCl_4-H_2$ system.

  • In this study, in order to improve the impact resistance of the B4C tile-inserted B4Cp/Al7075 hybrid composite, a control method of the B4C/Al7075 interface was developed and the characteristics of the controlled interface were analyzed. B2O3, Ni, and Si were coated on the B4C tile surface using additional thermal oxidation, electroless plating, and plasma spraying. The coated B4C tile is inserted into the B4Cp/Al7075 composite material using the liquid pressurization method. Interfacial energy, bonding strength, and impact resistance were measured to analyze the effect of the coating. All coatings enhanced interfacial energy, bonding strength, and impact resistance, and in particular, it was confirmed that the impact resistance increased by 86.8% when B2O3 coating was used. This study is significant in developing and analyzing a core surface treatment method that improves the performance of B4C/Al series composites, which are attracting attention as next-generation lightweight amour and bulletproof materials.
