  • In this paper, an analytical procedure for solving several static and dynamic problems of non-uniform beams is proposed. It is shown that the governing differential equations for several stability, free vibration and static problems of non-uniform beams can be written in the from of a unified self-conjugate differential equation of the second-order. There are two functions in the unified equation, unlike most previous researches dealing with this problem, one of the functions is selected as an arbitrary expression in this paper, while the other one is expressed as a functional relation with the arbitrary function. Using appropriate functional transformation, the self-conjugate equation is reduced to Bessel's equation or to other solvable ordinary differential equations for several cases that are important in engineering practice. Thus, classes of exact solutions of the self-conjugate equation for several static and dynamic problems are derived. Numerical examples demonstrate that the results calculated by the proposed method and solutions are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental data, and the proposed procedure is a simple, efficient and exact method.

  • Phytochemicals have long been known to hold a number of physiological benefits, including antioxidant, anticardiovascular activities and anticancer. The profitable effects of phytochemicals from food sources such as vegetables and fruits, with respect to neurodegeneration, are only beginning to receive increased attention. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the major neurodegenerative diseases for which no treatment is available, and characterized by loss of cognition and memory. Many recent studies show that the brain of AD patient is subjected to increased oxidative stress resulting from free radical damage, and the resulting cellular malfunctions are widely believed to be responsible for neuronal degeneration in AD. In this study, the relative relation between AD and phytochemicals were surveyed.

  • This study describes the battery functional test in order to explore vestibular oculomotor system. These tests are the following : a) acceleration test by using a pseudorandom stimulus. b) caloric test by considering both the constant temperature variation in the semicircular canals for a short time and the only head movement, to the fore and the back, for the ear ir- rigation, which gave us two types of stimulus (cold and warm) according to the only head position. c) optokinetic test by continuous constant velocity displacement of a large image fill- ing the entire subject's visual field. With relation to the clinical practices, some results of research programs which are at present in progress are presented.

  • This paper experimentally deals with the excitation by functional electrical stimulus(FES) and the response of electromyo-potential at the muscles of antebrachial joint in a human body. The excitation of FES, which results in the contraction of the muscles and thus the flection of the joint, shows that the flection angle of the joint is proportional to the magnitude of the stimulus current. The response of electromyo-potential measured according to the FES shows the linearly-proportional relation between the joint torque and the electromyo-potential. The results can be used for active motion of joint rehabilitation.

  • Functional disorders of the temporomamdibular joint and masticatory system were investigated in 209 men and 110 women, ranging form 20 to 30 years old, with a method devised by Agerberg and Carlsson. The investigated persons were dental students of the School of Dentistry, Seoul National University and student nurses of the School of Medicine, Seoul National University. The obtained results were as follows : 1. Facial pain and headache were reported by 32%. 2. Pain on gaping was localized mainly to the temporomandibular area and was noted in 8%. 3. Chicking of the temporomandibular joints was reported by 26%, somewhat more often by males. 4. Clenching of the teeth was relatively common in men and biting of the lip was comman in women. 5. Prevalence of mandibular dysfunction was found in 53%.

  • In this paper, we study the existence of solutions and $L^2$-regularity for fractional order retarded neutral functional differential equations in Hilbert spaces. We no longer require the compactness of structural operators to prove the existence of continuous solutions of the non-linear differential system, but instead we investigate the relation between the regularity of solutions of fractional order retarded neutral functional differential systems with unbounded principal operators and that of its corresponding linear system excluded by the nonlinear term. Finally, we give a simple example to which our main result can be applied.

  • Tongue reconstruction remains a major aspect of head and neck reconstructive procedures. Surgeons planning tongue reconstruction should consider several factors to optimize the overall outcomes. Specifically, various technical aspects related to tongue reconstruction have been found to affect the outcomes. Multidisciplinary teams dedicated to oncologic, reconstructive, and rehabilitative approaches play an essential role in the reconstructive process. Moreover, operative planning addressing certain patient-related and defect-related factors is crucial for optimizing functional speech and swallowing, as well as quality of life outcomes. Furthermore, tongue reconstruction is a delicate process, in which overall functional outcomes result from proper flap selection and shaping, recipient vessel preparation and anastomosis, surgical approaches to flap insetting, and postoperative management. The second part of this review summarizes these factors in relation to tongue reconstruction.

  • Dietary supplements are used by more than one-half of the adult US population. By contrast, herbal products in Germany are carefully regulated by the same standards as drugs, and efforts are under way to standardize their regulation in the entire European Union. Most herbal users do not inform their physicians that they are taking these supplements, and most physicians do not inquire. Although some herbal products have clinically proven benefits, it is increasingly apparent that many contain potentially toxic substances, particularly in relation to interactions with drugs. Hence, it is essential that practicing physicians develop a working knowledge of herbals-specifically, about claims for their usage and potential or proven efficacies and toxicities-and that they incorporate such knowledge into the evaluation and management of their patients. By contrast, functional foods-integral components of the diet that are understood to contribute added health benefits-are the subject of intense and widespread research in food and nutritional science. Examples include many polyphenolic substances, carotenoids, soy isoflavones, fish oils, and components of nuts that possess antioxidant and other properties that decrease the risk of vascular diseases and cancer. Practicing physicians are advised to stay abreast of these emerging findings in order to best advise their patients on the value of health-promoting diets in disease prevention.

  • Objectives : Functional Cerebrospinal Therapy (FCST) is a new physiologic therapeutics developed in Korea as a meridian yinyang balance approach. The theory of yinyang balance has been at the core of health enhancement approach of meridian and acupuncture medicine ever since its start. Methods : Introductory overview of FCST is presented in relation with meridian yinynag balance theory. Results : As the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and related tissues have direct interconnection with brainstem proprioceptive or motor systems and the face is where all the meridians converge, FCST applies a fine adjustment of the posture of TMJ as a treatment tool for neurologic conditions or meridian imbalances. Conclusions : Highly sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic techniques to adjust various subset aspects of yinyang balance are developed within FCST, which is supposed to be one of major contributions to natural healing.
